Jana wrote: Why can Steve sing a bunch of Journey songs and it be okay but if Journey does it it's covering the songs?

In my opinion, the two situations aren't analogous. Obviously, the guys who are calling themselves "Journey" have every "right" to sing whatever they want to sing. Nobody can deny that, because it's a fact. I don't think it's really worth talking about who wrote which song. I believe that "Faithfully" is one of the few songs in the entire Journey catalog that Perry didn't have a writing credit on. As I've said in the past, I don't think 99.9% of music fans give a rat's ass who wrote a given song. It's the voice that gives a song life, that people usually make the connection with. Lionel Richie wrote the song "Lady" for Kenny Rogers, and I've never once heard Richie sing the song.

The final point I'll make is that I think those who claim Journey is a "cover band" (although I use the terminology "Tribute Band") are referring to their "singer of the week"... not Cain and Schon. I understand there are those who would support Journey if William Hung was their lead singer, but for many, the singer actually does matter. Also, for those who say "They can't 'cover' their own music"...I will remind you once again, that the singers they run in and out of the band have ZERO claim to 99% of the music being performed. Therefore, they are indeed covering the music, in my opinion!

I didn't see where anything she said was over the line or deserving of the responses it got. I can certainly understand how all the talk of 'sources' that may or may not (who's to say, IDK) be legit would be upsetting to someone who IS a legitimate source. As far as I'm concerned, the only true source regarding SP here is Lora and Cyndy (and Stu to a certain extent). Unless, of course, LockNLoad wants to re-join the party...

Steve Perry DOES deserve to be on a pedestal here. If not for Steve Perry and his time with Journey, this forum would not exist, because Journey would never have been the Journey that we all love. Period.

p.s. I don't know shit about what substances (legal or otherwise) any of the band members were using. I agree during the BGTY video, SP looks wild, and I gotta admit, I think it's HOT!!! :D

You're right he does look like he is on a little something-something on BGTY. He does look wild. It works. But the hottest he is, to me, is Girl Can't Help It - ROR. That was the hottest Steve Perry was ever. Well, to me from what I've seen. I always love watching that video.

What a stupid fucking post! A couple of points...grow the fuck up with this "can't say his name" bullshit! I feel like I'm back in 6th grade with this nonsense! Nobody has ever claimed that Perry isn't human, or is without flaws. I'm the biggest Perry supporter you'll ever meet. That doesn't mean I think the guy hasn't fucked up, along the way, just like everyone else. Perry fans are just here to remind the blind Kool-Aid drinkers, (which Melodic Rock is replete with, and Jackass Talk has exclusively) that without Perry, Journey doesn't become Journey.

Say what you want about Perry. I don't know if Perry was a boozer, a coke head, both, neither, or something else. I can tell you that none of it would surprise me, because there aren't a whole lot of rock stars who escape some kind of substance abuse! Regardless of what he did or didn't do, or the flaws he had or didn't have, it will never change the fact that for a time in history, he was one of the greatest voices to ever be heard. He is also the reason that Journey is still making a living, off of songs that he made famous! I will always take the Perry haters on, because I believe that they should respect (whether they like the guy or not) the fact that they wouldn't be on this (or any other) board discussing Journey, had Perry not been forced down Schon's throat, by Herbie Herbert!

John/Engima, good post. I agree with you on everything you said. Only place we differ, and I course I wasn't around in the early days of the band, but it's been so many years with Steve gone and not singing that it's easier to replace him for tours if the voice is good. Replacing him right after, say, ROR, in that long gap b/f TBF to me would have been impossible. It is tricky to replace a lead singer, especially one with a voice like Steve Perry's.

I enjoyed the concert with Arnel and the guys. And I've developed an attachment to Arnel as the lead singer and I am rooting for the guys to keep making music, but I still love Steve Perry and understand he created the sound. And I know you don't care to see a concert without Perry. I appreciate that. I don't think there's a wrong answer. People just have different preferences. But great post. And you're right, back in the day, almost everybody in a band did drugs. Probably Steve would have done them the least, or quit them earlier than, say, Neal, because of his voice. So who cares?

Deb, I'm with you all the way on that. I loved Raised on Radio. (I know, a lot of guys don't like it). That's the concert I would love to see, was that night. He looked perfect and I loved his voice on that. I wouldn't care if on some songs that night his voice was a little rough. It just made him sexier. Thanks for posting that song.

And I would love to see one in the very early days with Gregg Rolie, because I'm starting to really get into vibe of the late '70s rock music.

Erm, Deb, when you refer to his 'ROR shag', are you referring to his haircut, or are you using the more british use of that word? 'Cause if it's the latter, then there's a whole lot I missed reading!!! :D

Thanks Deb! It was worth wadeing through the freedom of speech from the posters here just to see this video again. How can anyone wonder what it is about Steve Perry after viewing this. It does not get any better.

But he did make (sang in), up to then, 6 complete albums with them, didn't he?

Then why is it such a big deal to some that Journey continues on without SP, being labeled a "cover band?"

I would never call them a cover band (you can't cover yourself), but it does sadden me to have another singer cover those songs sung (and made famous) by SP. That's why I would never go to one of their concerts (I'm sure no one cares 1 way or the other). Not saying they have no right to continue on ... just that I can't participate in the celebration.

Okay, I understand what you're saying and I respect your decision to not go to any more concerts where Steve Perry isn't singing. I'm just trying to figure out why it's okay for Perry to sing Journey songs on a solo tour with a different drummer, keyboard player, guitar player and bass player, but it is NOT okay (determined by fans or SP himself) for Journey to play Journey songs with a different singer.

WTF? .. is right  . Gone for a day to find all hell had broken loose ... thread title changed ... :?: I want to continue my conversation with IlliniJrny, lol.

Nobody is saying it's not okay for Journey to continue on without SP (as if anyone has a say other than Neal & Jon ). I AM saying that each lead singer change that has come after SP was hired to cover the songs made famous by him — true or false? As for SP singing Journey songs in his solo tour — he made 2 albums on his own and 6 albums (up to then) with Journey. Choosing a 7-to-12 song split in the setlist is just about right. How many songs did SA sing from the SA/J albums in any given show? One? Arnel sings what ... 3? from Revelation. Okay, yes, I would agree the the musicians SP took on tour with him were covering his Journey bandmates.

As for going or not going to Journey's concerts, I think it's all personal preference. Arnel is a great guy and does those songs justice ... no question about it. There were some doubts about him in the beginning ... but it has all been erased and forgotten ... as it should be. May his voice hold up so he continues his dream ... and line the J-boys pockets. Peace.

Can I hitch a ride? Cause this is the most confusing thread I have read in a long time! Purrkat stop editing all your threads, they make no sense! It is one thing to correct spelling, but to void your post of any meaning?    :? :? :? :? :? :? :? [/quote]
