Did Journey start a trend for bands to replace their singer?

Postby Voyager » Fri Oct 24, 2008 4:18 am

I see that Yes is now touring with Steve Howe, Chris Squire, and Alan White... but no Jon Anderson. WTF??? Did they find a new singer on YouTube?

Journey seems to have started a trend for 80's bands to replace their famous lead singers and get away with it. Next thing you know, Mick Jagger will be getting kicked to the curb and replaced with a younger YouTube soundalike.

Let's face it, the vocals go way before the fingers go. The guitarists, bassists, keyboard players, and drummers can keep on playing into their 70's, but the vocalists start to lose their edge at around 50. While there are some exceptions to the rule (Sammy Hagar, Sting, Paul Rodgers), for every one of them you have a David Lee Roth, Steve Perry, Brian Johnson, or Geddy Lee who are losing their voices. Some of these guys just keep on touring and raking in the cash even though their voices are trashed.

I'll be going to see AC/DC in January, and I don't know what to expect from Brian. Last time I heard him on a live recording he was sounding like he had been gargling with sand mixed with glass fragments. I think it would be cool if they recruited Jesse James Dupree of Jackyl to help him out with the lead vocals, because I imagine we will be hearing some croaking and cracking. But they will rake in the bucks anyway.

Would it be Journey that started it or Judas Priest, even though Halford came back after some time....?

Nah, it's just that most bands have been on the "sobering up" kick, so now they find they can't put up with each other any more!

Really? That must be why they make more money on tour than any other band.

I wouldn't say Mick sucks, but he's never been my cup of tea. I watched one of their concerts on VH1, and the dude knows how to perform for an audience, that's for sure. But I never was much of a fan of their music. The only song of theirs that I ever cared for was "Shattered". I was more into Journey, Def Leppard, Rush, Judas Priest, Van Halen, etc.

Yeah, someone posted about this a few weeks ago. Anderson has some kind of respiratory infection that has taken him a while to get over.

Most male singers start having noticeable changes in their voices in their mid 30s from what I've seen. Even Hagar's voice has changed over the years. Paul Rodgers does still sound remarkably similar to his early years, though.

I'll be going to see AC/DC in January, and I don't know what to expect from Brian. Brian Johnson...That guy is lucky he can still talk singing like he does for so many years.

When I saw them on the tattoo you tour, The crowd had pretty much booed Perry and the boys off the stage a little earlier. Mick sounded like shit and this was 1981. I can't imagine what he sounds like now, but Stones fans won't care. For them it's the concert experience more than the quality of the music.

If anybody did, it was Styx. Thank God they did. Nothing against DeYoung (who I like a lot) , but Styx just wasn't a rock band anymore with him at the helm AND Gowan's such a better keyboard player.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

You're right - I forgot about them. They were the first to surgically remove the LSD (lead singer disease) out of the band. Without the enormous ego that made the band top-heavy, they were able to continue touring and recording without all that conflict. The same thing has happened for Journey. Good for them. Who needs all the drama? Just make the fucking music and tour!

I never said that the Stones don't have diehard, loyal fans. That said, just because someone makes a ton of money on tour doesn't mean they're great. As far as I know, acts like "The New Kids On The Block" and "Britney Spears" have also made a ton of money! It means absolutely nothing. I've always thought Jagger sucked. The one thing I'll applaud the guy for is putting together a remarkable, legendary career, for what I thought was very little talent, and a shit singing voice!

Stupid comparison. The Stones have done it for over 40 years. The aforementioned acts did it for a few...if that.

Yeah, but the big difference with that was Van Hagar never rode on DLR's shirt tails... they made all new music. Styx and Journey still sell concert tickets due to the music that was made with their former singers.

That music was made by 5 guys. And while the lead singer is arguably the most recognizable, the fact that Journey was still able to draw 26,000 people in Chicago and 20,000 plus in every major city points to the fact that Steve Perry is not that missed. Is Arnel as good? No way, but no one is riding Perry's coattails. He hung them up long ago. It's not Journey's fault he can't sing anymore. I don't see why they should have to throw 20 years of making incredible music out the window because Steve Perry didn't take care of his voice. They're playing music people obviously still want to hear.

Not true at all. Have a picture with Kip Winger and as much as I like Winger's music and he's a sweetheart of a guy...... he's got a good voice but I wouldn't put him up there with my top 3 soul emoters. :P

Come on, they purposely went looking (twice!) for a Perry sound alike.
If they weren't riding on Perry, a whole lot more people might have been considered for that spot, but they only went for ones who could do Perryoke.

I like my soulful vocals to have a little husk. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpZ9fWvTR80

Think that's why I liked Perry's later vocal tone more. IMO it portrays more emotion than the crystal clear high vocals.

Based on the last several PMs, yes.

But seriously, they're riding so far up Perry's ass that he's gonna need to march in a parade and minute now.

Journey remaking Journey songs? Yeah, that's ridiculous. They're on record as saying they did not want to do that, but the deal was too lucrative. So rather than be posers they parlayed it into a 2 disc package at no extra cost...but everyone says they're greedy.

They have to stay true to their back catalog. 20 years ago they may have been able to forge in a different direction a la Van Halen and AC/DC, but not in 1998. Besides, the songs are written around a high tenor. Would you want Neal to retire and replace him with the fucking guitarist from Nirvana? It has to sound right. Get your head out of your ass, throw away your Loon card and join the thinking world.
