OT: Def Leppard with Taylor Swift "Photograph" vid

Postby fightingilliniJRNY » Fri Oct 24, 2008 9:49 am

From their upcoming Crossroads episode:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0, ... 58,00.html

On a side note - for how much Def Leppard maintains that their backing vocals are all live (which is every single chance they get), why do they all have oversized, puffy Steve Augeri circa 2005 microphones? You can't see anything below their noses. Which is obviously the point when you're trying to hide something...

I say bullshit! Watch around the -2:30 mark. Joe is the only person at the mic minus maybe one other person in the back, yet there's about 3-4 voices sining. Just watch it... They are very convincing, but seeing that makes me call bullshit! I'm anxious for someone to jump up and defend this...

The only person in frame that wasn't at his mic was Collen? Her bandmate on far-right stage is singing as well.

Taylor Swift has such an average voice in live performances. Every time I see her on awards shows or TV singing I'm underwhelmed.

I did too. I thought it sounded great. I won't argue with anyone that says DL uses recorded vocal help, but after watching that video, I'd definitely say Elliott was live there.

I'm looking forward to seeing that episode on Friday now. Have to have the wifey record it.

Was just thinking the same thing, she doesn't really have any power to her vocals there.

If that's all Elliott can bring to a one song show it's no wonder they use more tape than Macy's at Christmas time. His voice has that "blown out/broken" tone to it a la Perry in radio interviews after TBF.

It definitely sounds like all those cigarettes have caught up to Elliot. He still sounded 1000 times better than Taylor Swift. I must admit that I don't know a whole lot about Taylor Swift, but I thought she was fucking DREADFUL! Country chicks should stick to singing hick music

On another note, I still love watching Rick Allen drum. I have zero idea of the guy's competence as a drummer, or if he is even considered remotely good at his craft. That said, it's hard not to admire the hell out of a guy up there drumming with one arm, and his feet. I've never seen any other drummer pull that off.

It's not a one song show. I think they play a half dozen or so of each others songs. Elliott's voice has never been the strength of Def Leppard. Signature sure, the strength has always been the music and Clark/Willis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS70QWFns8s and Clark/Collen dual guitar work.

If I am talking about the same moment around 2:30 that you are, it looks a lot like something done with editing. The next shot has them all at the mic so quickly, you wonder if any human can get to a mike and sing that quickly. Not saying that this proves whether or not they use tapes. I'm just questioning how reliable that piece of evidence is. (But, hey, what do I know?)

Also, don't bands, like Def Lep, pull tricks sometimes when they are on tv? For instance, they lipped to Pour Some Sugar on Dancing With The Stars. Could they have used tapes for that show, when they don't usually live?

Some shows require a taped performance. They've got enough to go wrong without having the band flub a number.

Has Joe ever bragged about his singing? I always thought most people knew he can't sing well but were into Leppard because of the catchy riffs, double lead guitars and cool lyrics. As long as the instruments are live, fuck his vocal prowess.

It's live. I have a friend who went to the taping and said they did "Photograph" at least twice, and a couple other things multiple times as well, so they definitely weren't lip-synching as a band (although I can't comment either way on any vocal 'assistance' in the BG vox).

Joe sounded better than I expected given what people on this board have said over the last few years.

She. Is. AWFUL. As if I needed one more reason to think country music is total fabricated bullshit. My god, get that woman away from a microphone.

Show was done live with a studio audience. I've talked with a few who were there. Everything was done live as usual.

But the Mastered version or promo clip here has been sweetened/layered in editing. But the vocals were live and done with multiple takes.

anyone that has half a clue, knows with that many mics and instruments nothing will sound perfect with 2 bands on one stage.

Im a huge fan and i'm not surprised they added layers to the vocals.

and i agree, Taylor sounds very out of place.... not a good match.

will be interesting to watch the full show and comment after that.

Spot on, dude. I love Def Leppard, and even as a lifelong fan, I never thought Elliot was this great singer. I always liked the sound of his voice, but he was never anyone known for being an exceptional vocalist. Leppard was never really about the vocals.

Are people around here that desperate for a controversy that they are searching for one? The simple fact is that everybody pipes in their backing vocals. I don't know why this is such a big deal.

That's an easy one to answer! Taylor Swift is a hot commodity right now, so what better way to give your classic rock band exposure than to do one of your classic songs with someone like that? Although I'll say I'd much rather it be Carrie Underwood or better yet, Amy Lee from Evanescence.

Like or not, it's a great idea and I think more classic melodic rock bands should be doing this if they're wanting to get back into the spotlight. Maybe it's similar to prostituting your work, but if we're wanting melodic rock to stick around for years to come, this is an excellent way to reach the modern day MTV/CMT/VH1 crowd.

Nope, I thought the same thing, no power to her vocals at all....not a good thing when you're trying to sing rock. They could have picked a better fit from the other young singers out there. Mind you, if it was Christina Aguilera, vocally she'd have blown those old boys off the stage.

Because Def Leppard routinely chastises people in the media for thinking that their background vocals are not live. Elliot maintains that they are all "abnormally good singers." I beg to differ.

Never heard anybody call themselves an abnormally good singer. Sounds the boys in Def Leppard have way to high an opinion of themselves. I'll admit say they sound good but not abnormally good.
