Worst Performance by Steve Perry

Seeing the "Worst performance by Augeri" thread got me wondering if back in Perry's day we would have seen the "worst" performances if Youtube and cell phone cameras, etc. had been around?

I have to think that there were some nights that the performance didn't come close to measuring up to what we see on the videos that are out there. A lot of criticism of Augeri, JSS and Arnel showing less than perfect performances are available to us tbecause the technology is available that wasn't years ago. It seems like the band doesn't perform a single show where someone has taken video and posts it on the internet.

This thread isn't at all to argue the merits of the performances themselves, they are what they are. Just wondered if we know more today and then base judgements on it because of the availability of the performance vs what we might have known 25 - 30 years ago.

nah, the Separate Ways video was worse. Pretty much a crime against humanity second only to Billy Squier's "Emotions in Motion" video.

It's easier to pick the flaws in Augeri, Arnel and JSS because they are imitating another singer that has set the original melody. Cain wrote the songs and Steve set the tune on most of them. No one has cracked on the Revelation songs that Arnel has performed live or the Arrival songs that Steve A. has done. Emulators will always be scrutinized more than originators.

I think you should check your facts, dude. To my knowledge, the only song in the entire Journey catalog that Cain wrote on his own was "Faithfully". While Cain was certainly instrumental in the songwriting of Journey, he had plenty of help from both Perry and Schon!

I Know Perry and Schon helped but I thought the lyrics on most of the hits ( besides DSB) were mostly Cain with Perry adding little changes to match the melody he was creating. I know there are a lot of songs that Perry wrote with Schon and a few by himself.

Perry on his worst day is better than most on their BEST day, so I wouldn't break a sweat trying to find any sub-par Perry vocals or performances. A voice isn't a guitar, so nobody will be spot on 24/7. It's a miracle Perry pulled off what he did for as long as he did, considering their brutal touring schedule. They haven't done anything close to that since.

As far as Gunbot saying Cain wrote the songs....check your facts, dude. You are way off base. I think Enigma covered that for ya.

There were actually several performances on this particular tour that weren't great, for Perry. I remember downloading these performances more than 10 years ago, and I was honestly shocked that it was Perry. The dude sounded very sick or very done!

I know this is going to get me into trouble here but....and trust me, you won't find a BIGGER Perry fan than me....BUT....this whole hip thing was crap. There was NO WAY, I mean NO FRIGGIN WAY he was going to be able to tour for Trial By Fire. Even if they changed all the keys to a whole step lower...he is older, it's natural. I don't know why anyone would EXPECT him to be able to still be the phenomenal singer of his youth. No one expects Michael Jordan to come back when he's over 50 and play like he used to, it's not possible. That doesn't change the incredible player he was. Same with Perry...in my humble opinion, one of the best in rock and roll history. It's ALRIGHT that he can't do what he used to...it means he's human.

Maybe what we don't feel comfortable with is the reminder that we're all getting older? I don't know. I just know that he and the band are still not getting the respect they deserve in the music business. That is what bothers me the most.

You're really talking about two separate issues here. Perry is obviously older, and I don't think anyone thinks he would be able to tour and pull off the Journey catalog, at this point in his life. The reality is that it would be a super human feat. That said, I think you're out of line saying that his hip was simply a made up issue. As I understand it, he actually had a surgical procedure on his hip, so I don't believe that it was made up. You can certainly argue whether or not it was Perry's way out, if he was looking for a way out, but I don't believe that he concocted a medical issue that wasn't there!

Cain was the main songwriter. Period. He wrote most of the lyrics. It only make sense. Look at Perry's solo albums...8,950 other writers and the songs still sucked!!!

I don't know who wrote what, but Perry's solo efforts definitely paled in comparison to anything done with Journey. Neither are as good without the other.

It's Perry's strongest solo effort, and it's weak compared to anything done with Journey.

It's Perry's strongest solo effort, and it's weak compared to anything done with Journey.

Rrrrright....that's why Schon cried like a baby to HH when Perry did his solo album. He said it sounded just like Journey! Earth to Schon...come in Schon. :lol:
