Drums on One More - not of this earth

Postby mriesenb » Tue Oct 28, 2008 7:20 am

I was listening to Trial By Fire today and that made me realize how tasteful a drummer Steve Smith is.

One More features some of the best drumming work I ever heard on a Journey song. It's fun to hear him get loose towards the end.

I like Castronovo, but Smith is something else. It's the same with Jeff Porcaro and Simon Phillips in Toto.

Steve Smith is a great drummer. As for 'One More'...Image

Listen to the his timing when he comes in for Still She Cries. Perry lets out a breath at 00:43 and then Smitty's comes in. Perfect.

The intro to IHSBYH. His steady beats and light tapping in FIB.

TBF is a Smitty masterpiece.

TBF's also one of the few times get Valory's not in the background. That bass is pounding.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Smitty, TBF, and One More?

One of the most precise drummers out there, a phenomenally deep/textured/mature-sounding album, and the most ball-smashingly epic song Journey has committed to record.

Was that on the 23rd take or the 46th?

IMO Steve Smith is the #1 greatest drummer of all time.

I have always loved Smith's drumming on "One More" too. IMO he out Neil Peart'd Neil Peart on that song. What I mean by that is that it's the style I could hear Peart playing, only done better than Peart would do. Peart is fantastic, but Smitty is better.

Castronovo is a beast on drums too.

Porcaro was the best drummer for laying down a goove.

Phillips is high on my list too.

Despite what some people want to claim, Ross Valory is a great bass player. And "One More" is also a great song for Ross bass playing. Neal, Steve Smith and Ross kick major ass on that song.

I would have to disagree. Being a drummer, it is much harder for me to emulate Neil Peart than it is Steve Smith.

Check out this animation of Neil Peart that shows off his playing skills:

Amazing. Show me something comparable or better from Smitty. I'd love to see it!

BTW - I do think Smitty is a top-notch drummer.

I've come to this conclusion about Journey (well, my prefered line-up anyway):

Steve Perry - Voice of God
Neal Schon - Guitarist of God
Ross Valory - Looks Like God (in his Jesus hair-and-beard days)
Gregg Rolie - Is God
Steve Smith - Who God Wants To Be When He Grows Up
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

From the rumors, I'd say SP 46th, Smitty 1 take.

Cool AV there GB. MadMax and the dog. The dog's the coolest part. :)

Herbie Herberts or Irving Asimoff - depending on who you listen to.
And it would seem that Ticketmaster is hell - thankfully I don't have to deal with them!

Have you heard any of Smith's playing with "Vital Tech Tones" or "Vital Information?"

So what do the Aussie's you know think of Mel? Is he held as someone that made Australia more famous or the fact that he wasn't born there matter?

And yeah, the BH are cool dogs.

We think Australia made Mel famous, not the other way around. And even though he was born in the US, we proudly claim him as Australian - except when he's being a dick-head - then he's all yours! (well, actually, then the media implies that America 'ruined' our Mel).

And Blue Heelers ARE cool! Almost as cool as Kelpies (I only say that because I own a Kelpie...and Blue Heelers are better dogs, but...

I have lots of wool, both spun and unspun. But only one guy gets to peep at my bo's at the moment - and I'm missing him terribly.

Thanks for the sympathy. He lives OS and is stupidly busy at the moment - too busy to spend much time talking with me, which I'm finding hard. But it'll sort itself out.
