OT - Joaquin Phoenix quits Hollywood...

Joaquin Phoenix, who turned 34 years old just yesterday, stunned E! Online reporter Jason Kennedy with the announcement that he would be retiring from acting. The two-time Oscar nominee stated this on the red carpet at a Monday benefit for the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, a charity founded by Paul Newman.
Phoenix said that "Two Lovers," his upcoming romantic drama with Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw, will be his final on-screen role.

"This will be my last performance as an actor. I'm not doing films anymore... I've been through that. I've done it... I'm dead serious."

Phoenix is apparently giving up acting to pursue music, a passion of his since he learned to play guitar to play the role of Johnny Cash in 2005's "Walk the Line." According to Billboard, Phoenix is working on an album with Tim Burgess, frontman for the UK group The Charlatans. Burgess said, "Once he learnt guitar he found that he had quite a lot of demons inside himself that he wanted to expel through music.
Phoenix appeared at the charity event on Monday with his brother-in-law, Casey Affleck. Affleck is married to Phoenix's younger sister, Summer. In explaining his retirement decision, Phoenix said, "It's Casey's time now."
Affleck confirmed for E! Online that Phoenix is telling the truth when he says he's leaving the acting profession, saying, "I guess he's getting into music. He's putting out an album." But both Affleck and Phoenix hurried away from the cameras without elaborating.
"Two Lovers," Phoenix's final film, premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival to mostly positive reviews. Ray Bennett of The Hollywood Reporter writes, "Phoenix plays the romantic lead with great intelligence and enormous charm, making his character's conflict utterly believable." The picture is scheduled for release on February 13th, 2009. So far there is no word on when Phoenix's first album will hit shelves.

Thanks for posting...... Oh man, kinda shocking. He's one of my favorite actors. I so wish he would have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Johnny Cash. Oh well. Guess he's moving on to music. His singing in WALK THE LINE was awesome, IMO.

We played a lot of the same places Billy Bob did this past summer, missing him by a few days or weeks here and there. So I genuinely tried to research some of his tunes and appreciate his music. Ugh...Just thinking off the top of my head....actors who chase the rock star dream....Billy Bob, Keanu, Kevin Costner....I think Jada Pinkett Smith actually does a pretty legit thing with her metal band. For the most part though I can't say there's a lot that's musically satisfying there.

They do sell a lot of tickets though.

I've never understood these 'demons' actors and musicians have to deal with. Most of us just consider it life.

Not gonna lie, having your big brother die in your arms in the street is a pretty shitty thing to carry around. But it remains to be seen if putting that to a beat is the best means of exorcism.

God that's right - I forgot that part.... I remember hearing that 911 tape on the news - it was Joaquin who called... that was pretty awful.

Many musicians, artists, and other creative types seem to have a harder time dealing with that kind of stuff, so they put that into whatever art it is that they practice.

Technically it was Leaf Phoenix that called the police and held his brother. But it's the same person.

Yeah, forgot about that as well. And wasn't trying to judge him. He's done a good job of having a successful career so far. Hope this works out.

LOL

While phoenix had a few good, gripping roles....for the most part, you're right...he's been really shitty. I'll put his gladiator role up there....Phoenix does a great evil douchebag. The kind of bad guy you want to reach through the screen and strangle. But the rest of his work in hollywood can't touch River Phoenix's role in Sneakers....and that was one of the worst fucking films thust upon the unsuspecting public.

As for Keanu Reaves, can't knock the guy. He kicked ass in several films in several different genres. He's done great work in comedy, action and vag-flicks. I'll forgive a few stinkers, cause as a whole, he's done a good job...

What boggles my mind is how these fucktarts get the idea that they'd be good musicians or songwriters, because they know how to remember a few lines and look sexy on screen.

Neither can Roddick. So he aptly put him to sleep last night.
