What's your point? You could have said the same thing in 2004 and every other election!

John from Boston

The point is that rarely, if ever, are people united in this country. Those who are, are typically on the extreme right or left.

Too often, Republicans and Democrats both take a win for some sort of mandate when it is not. People want something different, and our two party system offers them only one alternative to what they have now. If Republicans are in power and they want change, the only option is a Democrat and vice versa.

People were tired of Bush. In a few years, they will be tired of Obama (and would have been tired of McCain if he had won).

You only need to read the left column. Jobs lost under Bush - 2 million. Jobs added under Clinton - 3 million. Case closed.

Here we go again. Just like Bush caused gas to be $3+ per gallon (never mind that I just paid $1.80 today and he didn't have anything to do with that either), he lost 2 million jobs. With the exception of several thousand people in the Executive Branch, I don't think that Clinton or Bush gave anyone or lost anyone a job.

Did the economy grow or contract during the corresponding years of their presidencies? Yes. Did they create or eliminate those jobs? No.

Well I certainly don't agree that people are just looking for change for change's sake. The truth of the matter is that people aren't just "tired of Bush". The dude has the LOWEST APPROVAL RATINGS IN THE HISTORY OF THE OFFICE! Sure people want change, but they want change because the country is a fucking DISASTER! On another note, I think 8 years is more than long enough to deal with any one president, and it was about 7 years too long for W.!

okay then only some of us want to move away from the failed policies, a plurality. feel free to suck on your sour grapes and fight the shift to move forward.

Disappointed, yes. Sour grapes, no. I have said for some time on this board that regardless of who wins, the American people will continue to be the losers. Our two party system is so entrenched and forces anyone (Bush, McCain, Obama, Clinton, everyone) who wins office to (literally) buy into it to remain in office. McCain is no reformer any more than Obama will be able to be a "uniter".

btw - If you are headed over a cliff, moving forward may not be the best move. :)

W never had the Democrats on board with him and lost most of the conservatives by spending like a Democrat. The rating shows that people are ready to move on. Congress has lower approval ratings than Bush, but the Democrats who have been in the majority for the past 2 years are gaining seats.

I agree that 8 years is enough of any one person. Don't agree that W was 7 years too long.

Another classy post from a classy guy.

I would hope that the Dems on this board would have done the same.

I felt for McCain during his speech. He gave it a valiant effort.

The guys were just getting ready to intro into the first song in their set tonight and Keith was jawing on about thanking people for coming out on election night and blah blah... no sooner than he said that the CNN screen went ape with the "Obama Elected President". I expected this to go on all night! That's why I went out to the bar... I was going to stay up all night and watch the results. Pfft.

What a night. I know I've always said I don't like either candidate. And I equally poke at both sides... but listening to the acceptance speech tonight, I'm wondering... well, hoping, that he's not as bad as I initially thought.

I'm still a patriotic gun loving bumpkin... but I'm still the politically open unaffiliated moderate. Congrats to Obama. I wish him safety and luck. I hope he can do half the pretty shit he's talking up. :)

Whether Obama "dislikes," "doesn't much like," or outright "hates" the Constitution, it doesn't matter.
You won't be able to provide a quote for either.
It was never said.

As I mentioned before both candidates this year upset my deeply libertarian sensibilities. Whilst I am unhappy with the Obama win, I would have not been much happier with a McCain win.

I think the election will have some negative consequences, and Ill be likely supporting Obamas opponent in 12.

However to me, for now the Obama is President , and that is that. Personally that means

1) I ll refer to him to as President Obama, not Barry, or use the word "fuck" or any other profananity when I speak to about him or call the guy any other number of stupid names . The President is the President, not a laughing stock. (... we've seen too much of from both sides the last 16 years -republican and democrat and the hate shit that both sides get into has got to end, and someone has to be the first to quit )

2) As I am at least temporarily living overseas, I wont criticise him in front of foreigners (nothing pissed me off when I saw Repubs did it to Clinton and Dems do it to Bush) even when, as I expect will happen shortly, the rest of "enlighted opinion" in the world stabs him in the back, pillories him as a fraud, and decides they still cant stand the US anyway. I'll also foresee myself reminding them constantly that no way could a minority ever get elected to the highest office in the land in their country. The irony, I expect, is that as much as I oppose they guy, I'll probably spend alot time defending him.

good luck President obama.

I feel the same way this morning that I felt the night Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won best actor/actress....

I've always felt that Obama's popularity stemmed from his color, and that he is the 'vogue' thing to do. Especially win the young hipsters. But seeing how much of a sad, sorry campaign the Repubs ran...it's hard to say that now. I guess it was a combination of both, really.

I will add, however, that I guess I'm glad that he won so we won't have to hear it from the blacks anymore that 'The Man' is keeping them down.

I really wanted Hiliary to win the primaries. And I can definitely say, with 100% certainty, that she lost because of Obama's color. All you have to do is look at how black women voted. Black women are TWO minorities: Women FIRST, then black. I guess they related more with their color than their gender. And that is sad.

We saw history last night. Let's hope that our country and the way we live doesn't become history.

I agree with most of this. McCain was too much of a Bush close for people to differentiate them. Palin helped (I think) but not enough.

With as much whoopin' and hollerin' from the black people out in the streets (even in my neighborhood alone) I'm not so sure there wouldn't have been rioting had Obama lost.

I just hope he doesn't back off on defense and homeland security too much. The last thing we need is to let our guard down.

We've spent eight years with a President who owned the Texas Rangers and did cocaine. We're going to have at least 4 years with a President who smoked dope, used cocaine and could only get into Occidental College. Smart people fuck up early in life and then turn things around. I'll give him a chance.

Warmest congratulations to President-elect Obama and a big thank you to Senator McCain for being willing to step up and sacrifice at the level a US presidential campaign takes these days.

May we all stop villifying one another and begin working together to create a brighter future.

I have to say, I've not been really PROUD of things my country has done or the direction that they've taken for most of my adult life. Scandals, places we were where we shouldn't have been, corruption, etc. The hope that America experienced in the 60s with Kennedy and Martin Luther King seemed like fairy tales to me as I was too young to know what was happening. It didn't seem like we were possible of actually evolving to the point where we now find ourselves. A black president? Wow, maybe there IS hope for us that we can all live together.

I know a lot of people here are pissed that their candidate didn't win, but the fact that we've all just been through something historical is pretty damned amazing and I actually have HOPE that we will now start doing the right things in the world.

Yeah, it probably won't happen and it'll be business as usual, but for one brief moment here, I'm feeling pretty good about the future of America.
