Great post, Lula!Lula wrote:there is dissent and there is the stupidity of racism. dissent is healthy. to dissent based on ability to speak or lack of is unfounded. w in my opinion is an atrocious public speaker. obama is gifted as an orator. i imagine there will be legitimate causes for dissent. the ending of our occupation of iraq, health care for citizens, help for higher education, these are reasons some might dissent as they disagree with these policies.

I would agree that. However, Blueskies seemed to imply that with the use of the word monkey, scarygirl was showing her "true feelings". I sincerely hope that race and the accusations of racism do not become tools to try to stifle dissent.

I had to reread these posts over and over again to see where on earth there could possibly be even remotely implied race remarks. I still don't see it. I took the monkey reference in regards to actors, something that could have been said by someone speaking of any person.
Are people looking for things that aren't there? The "ears" comment is no different than comments made about the other candidates looks. And there were some nasty comments.
I just don't see race comments, at least not in this.

Just lightening up the subject a little due to the fact that it was already discussed on the previous page and I don't see the need in reiterating what has already been said. While I agree that it was a GREAT speech, this is the guy who wrote the speach:
(Jon Favreau, 27 , was the one who wrote the speech. Even though he was the one who wrote it, I think it was also important how Obama delivered it. Bush would've killed the same speech with his "my fellow americans" and "nu-ki-llar" crap.)

The ears statement was silly, but the point about regurgitating well written monologues was valid. Should she have used a parakeet as an example, rather than a monkey?
As to the policy issue, why was it considered racist when someone placed a picture of Obama on a box of waffles, to illustrate has "waffling" on issues?
Right on. That was my interpretation. If nothing else was implied with the use of a monkey then it would have made more sense to use something that could actually speak or at least mimmick speech, as was the supposed point to the analogy, which a parakeet is capable of and a monkey is not.Gunbot wrote:AlteredDNA wrote:Blueskies wrote:Then desnt should be spoken in term's of policy and action's rather then monkey reference's and talking about someone's ears, don't you think? It would have been better to use a parakeet as an example. Blacks, Filipino's and other darker skinned minorities usually aren't compared to birds so that would have been fine. It seems like common sense not to write something that, even without intent, could be construed as a derogatory analogy. I had my 19 year old son read the statement. When he asked what we were discussing, I said Obama's ability to give a great speech. He then asked me why we used the monkey analogy as he thought it ws offensive. I assured him it may not have been intentionally written with those thoughts in mind but I just wanted his honest opinion as an outsider coming into the middle of a conversation. He proved my point that interpretation is in the eyes of the beholder, so think before you speak still applies in this day and age.

Where did I say that no one else can voice their opinion??? She wanted me to explain something to her that seem's quite plain to me to see in what has been said by all the proceeding comment's so I did not feel the need to reiterate what had already been said.....so IMO, then maybe she should go back through and read it again to see if she could better understand... ves-a vee the joke in making light of that instead of saying something to get that point across ....so you didn't find it funny...ok...I also didn't find the monkey reference and big ears as in comparing Obama to a monkey funny either and found it offensive...get the point? Hey... you can each have your own opinion..who's stopping you? I was stating mine and you seem to have a problem with my having the same right to do so. Oh, and on a personal note, I do not think that you said it with any intent at all but I would appreciate it if you would not address me as Phil...that is not my name and none of my friends or family call me that...thanks.treetopovskaya wrote:so what are you saying phil... that no one else can voice an opinion... er an opposing opinion that is?

Clinton proved that if you surround yourself with intelligent people you can over come your own shortcomings. Many of us in the service were concerned about Clinton's inexperience in military affairs. When the situation escalated in Haiti, he rose to the task and really impressed us. I am sure he took guidence from his advisors and it paid off in that instance.

Anyone that wishes to could go through your posts and find where you said it as well as the many, many cuss words without one of these* when you stated you rarely ever cuss and when you do you don't spell the whole word...but I'm not gonna bother with it because I have a good memory...only if you want to continue this I can and refute everything you've said. LOL, pms'ing? I don't really pms much, so if you could find a post where I may have said something like that, that would be great. And not sure what songs you're talking about, I'm talking about you being so pissed about the 'your highness' comment that when I later defended SW2 against a very condiscending attack, you called me a common street walker, trailer trash and guttersnipe!
But of course, your above it all, right?

Anyways, not sorry I defended Indyjoe but.......this thread isn't about you and me agreeing or not.....it's about Obama. So lets just agree to leave it at that.
..my point in directing you to reread was because I had said what I wanted to already and you wanted to continue the discussion.
