I can answer this since I was one of us on this board who was there in Vegas. I remember when this part of the song came up live. This, along with the part during the Wheel In The Sky guitar solo, are two of my favorite high pitched Perry notes. So I always listen live to see if they attempt to sing them. And in Vegas, on this night, they did not sing or "produce" this sound. It must have been added in later.

A lot of music techies on this board ... learned a lot since I've been here.
For the longest time, didn't know how those sounds were made on the WITS & M/F songs until I saw SP actually performed them on the dvds.
On this Rev dvd, with WITS, it looked like Arnel was singing that note over Neal's solo ... but guess not according to the eyewitness.
There is a youtube video of a live M/F rendition during SA's time with Journey, wherein Deen sang the song, and SA is shown standing alongside making like he was singing the high note over the instrumentals. In light of tapegate, it was probably a mirage.

When I saw Journey on the Frontiers tour, both nights he cut short the high note on WITS. A the end of the Escape tour when i saw them, he was breaking the note in to a group of falsettos, totally different from the beginning of the tour in Tokyo (I can't remember them singing it when they opened for the Stones, I'm getting old I guess). It's no mystery to me why he never sang WCTNGOF live, they would have had to gut the ending.

He actually sang the high note in Dallas in '83, but it was shortened a bit. But he sounded perfect that whole show. That's why when I first heard other boots from '83, I was surprised that some of the performances were changed to dodge the high notes.

It was quite evident by the time Frontiers tour came along, SP dodged the high notes quite a bit. I was talking about the boots and videos of WITS from '78-'80, when he sang that high note so effortlessly over Neal's solo.

The Dallas show for the Frontiers tour was the one Steve admits to having blown out his voice just prior to, and had a "shot of B12" or whatever else you want to call Prednisone. I can't imagine having to perform under that kind of pressure.

Everyone who needs to hears the click track. Certainly Neal and Jonathan hear it because they start out some songs. Click tracks just make a whole lot of sense whether there's background vocals or other enhancements used or not. Listen to some boots from the Frontiers era and you'll see how a lack of tempo control can mess with a performance. Separate Ways at 190 BPM? You got it!
