New Essential Journey Packaging at Walmart

Postby tj » Thu Nov 13, 2008 1:51 pm

I was at Walmart earlier this evening and as always, stopped by the CD rack to see how many Journey titles were there. At the front was a new "Essential Journey with bonus 3rd disc". I looked it over and it has a some of the live from Houston 81 songs on it. It appears to be another Sony release to capitalize on the band's current success.

Anyone know anything about this one?

Saw it at a couple stores. Legacy is doing this with many of the artists and recordings in their library... NOT just Journey. Its their job, to make money - and when are you going to make money? When there is interest in a particular band or artist.

they did throw a few hidden gems in there that the average journey fan has probably never heard and as an added bonus they even threw in a deep album cut 'when i think of you' off trial by fire, thats a very interesting tune to add.that must've been the second ballad they would've released as a single if perry would've toured behind the album 8) .

How can they have "Good morning girl" but not "Stay awhile"?

they did the same thing on an earlier version when they put 'anytime' on there but left off 'feeling that way' somehow it just seems....wrong.certain songs like you said with 'good morning girl' and stay awhile' always blend together and are meant that way.

Probably because "Good Morning Girl" is a much better song.

I agree, leaving off Feeling That Way seems wrong to me also. Plus I have never understood why Why Can't This Night Go On Forever isn't on there. It makes this compilation incomplete for me, even though I have the original version of Essentials and still listen to it. And One More should be on there also.

Neal's carrying the band again. I think they've sold just as many albums post-Perry as they did with Perry. And I understand that they would have sold albums anyway, but Neal keeping the band going has put a lot of money in Big Beak's pocket. I think Lee Phillips should Neal a Christmas card...but just a card.

Are you talking about catalog sales after he left, or post-perry albums? Catalog, maybe. Remember, Escape sold about nine million and Greatest Hits sold around ten, all while Perry was technically in the band (up to TBF). I seriously doubt they have sold over 20 million since then.

I'm talking about post-Perry albums. They've sold a boatload in the last decade or so. But you're right;they sold more pre post-Perry...if that makes any sense!!!

This is basically the same 'essential' album that they put before. They just inserted a few more songs to make a new disc 2. It's just a Cmas thing. Flood the market to make the consumer think it's new.

From 2001.

I used to be a critic, but I'm 100% for repakaging all of the old stuff. You just never know when someone new will be introduced to that timeless music.

i used to get irritated when i saw KISS release a new greatest hits album around the same time every year.doesn't gene simmons understand these people have these songs already.then i realized every time he was doing it he was probably gaining thousands of new fans every time.the businessman part of gene trying to sell something new to someone who doesn't have it or convince those that do to buy it again.i think KISS now has more greatest hits repackaged in various forms than they do studio albums.

They wouldn't do it if it didn't sell. It's obviously still selling.

Even Perry understands it's the music that sells, not the individual entities that created it. He wouldn't have worked on the remasters if he thought the catalog wouldn't move anymore. Foreigner and Little River Band's back catalogs continue to sell, even thought he original singers have been gone for over a decade. As long as someone is touring with the band's name, money keeps getting made.

I wonder why they only put 8 tracks on the added "Essentials" disc, and didn't fill it up like the other two.

There's actually 14 songs on the bonus disc. The 6 you can't hear are off of Perry's latest release.
