Excellent! Well, in that case, I think we should be able to sell our female slaves to foreigners. I never did like that rule. Can we vote for a proposition to overturn it?

Exodus 21:7-8

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her."

Also, Jesus made it very clear as to how we should discipline our slaves:

Luke 12:47

"And that slave, which knew his master's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes."

Again, we have more Biblical rules on how to properly discipline slaves:

Exodus 21:20-21

"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property."

As far as your first quote goes, like it's been stated ad nauseum here, a lot of the teachings in the Old Testament are outdated, such as no more "Eye for an eye"..."Turn the other cheek" from the New Testament is the accepted quote.

Religion is sometimes taught in parable form...don't get stuck on the written word. The servant (servant of God?) in your second quote knew his duty, but made the conscious choice to neglect it. Now expand your mind even more...Could we all be considered "Servants of God"? When the servant puts his own will (sin?) before the will of God he must accept certain consequences (beaten with stripes... an expression of punishment, a striping of the conscience perhaps).

OK...my preaching is over. I'm certainly no Reverend Wright.
...And we get that you hate religion.

i am not one to discourage protests, but this one will only be overturned in the courts. as it stands, once an employer or insurance company denies the same sex spouse the rights of an opposite sex spouse the flood gates will open. let the yes on 8 folks rewrite their proposal to reflect what is needed to actually take away what the courts have ruled to be a fundamental right. and if the legislature does indeed rewrite the state of CA constitution to remove a given right.... it will be a dark day in sunny california.
Until we meet again, may God
Hold you in the palm of his hand.
