Bill Champlin - No Place Left to Fall

I actually bought this album three weeks ago or so. What an album. Just saw Andrew's news update about it. Really well-produced, great songs, and Bill is in great vocal form. Get it if you like BC alone and/or with Chicago.

Peter Cetera is on it? What's his role?

Cetera and Chicago is one of the few reunions that still need to take place.

Nah he isn't on it. Bill does a re-arranged Look Away that's really cool, like a blend of the acoustic version he does live with Chicago and a new electric arrangement. There's also two other songs, "All Along" and "Never Been Afraid" that are very Chicago-ish. Lots of funky songs on here too. A good diverse album, plus the tracks all segue into each other, one of my favorite mastering tricks.

Cetera+Chicago would be cool but I doubt it's going to happen. Scheff's been at it too long, plus he even plays bass for Lamm on his solo tours and what not.

Then Andrew is full of shit, this is what he said on the front page:

It is with great pride that Zink Music can present the European release of Chicago singer Bill Champlin's new solo album - his first in thirteen years!
The long anticipated new release from legendary singer songwriter Bill Champlin is here at last. No Place Left to Fall features the smooth, thoughtful song-writing you've come to expect from Bill. Soul infused grooves and undeniable hooks pave the way from start to finish, and songs like the title track are a reminder of why Mr. Champlin has been in the game so long. Bill and his band are joined by some very special guests including Peter Cetera, Steve Lukather, Bruce Gaitsch and Michael English - this album will not disappoint!

Also, they do solo tours?

Hm, maybe he is on there. When I read the press release my eyes just locked on Luke's name. PC might be on Never Been Afraid. There might be a vocal trade-off there, sometimes I get Bill's falsetto confused with Scheff on recent Chicago albums. Got the album off of iTunes, don't have any inserts or what not. Andrew, any idea? Otherwise, I'm gonna look into it. I'm gonna have to buy the damn hardcopy album anyway cause I want that Making of DVD... I love those Making of the album documentaries.

And yea, Lamm tours solo... he just put a DVD out from New Zealand not too long ago that's really good. I LOVE Lamm's solo material. Life Is Good In My Neighborhood and Subtlety and Passion are both excellent albums.

I think BC tours solo too, but he probably plays mostly out on the west coast in smaller places.

Perry rejoining Journey is more likely than Cetera rejoining Chicago. It really is not a personal thing from what I understand. Similar to Peter Gabriel and Genesis they still get along fairly well, Cetera is simply not interested in being in Chicago anymore.

He is also worried that his drug and drink problems may return if he re-joins Chicago. This was the main reason he left. He felt he could not get sober in the band.

While I don't agree with the Perry "can't sing" argument, based upon evidence that I've seen, Cetera seems to be able to pull off the Chicago songs better than Perry can the Journey songs these days ... his range is holding better. At least comparing that football rally with Perry vs. David Foster and Friends with Cetera. This isn't a "x vs. y in their prime comparison" as I don't think Peter Cetera (as outstanding as he was range wise) has anything on Steve Perry in his prime.

But comparing this:

to this:

It's extremely complicated. But regardless of how complicated it is, this industry is too strange to ever rule anything out. The parties have nearly reunited in the past.

There were a lot of reasons why he left. He had already sobered up, which had a lot to do with the changes in his life that followed. He wanted a break from Chicago massive touring schedule of 200-300 days a year. His first daughter was born and he wanted to watch her grow up.

Peter IS on the album. It was announced on his site during the recording process and Champlin talks about it in interviews.
