Death Threat Poll

Postby Tito » Tue Nov 18, 2008 5:39 am

Who will get more death threats this week? Obama or the referee of the Steelers/Chargers game. That ref cost a lot of people money last night. He made some people happy too but he'll be hearing from the ones he screwed.

The ref. Probably a lot of pissed bet holders from yesterday since that revoked TD effed up the spread.

$64 million dollar swing (edit: LEGALLY. Unknown, but much more ILLEGALLY).

http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_co ... .html#more

Gambling experts: NFL refs made $32 million mistake Sunday night

I turned on the TV last night just in time to catch the wild final two minutes of the Steelers/Chargers game on NBC. The Steelers were trailing 10-8 and driving for the winning score. A holding call negated an apparent touchdown run, forcing the Steelers to kick a field goal for an 11-10 lead. Here's how our story explained what happened next:

On first-and-10 from San Diego's 21 with 5 seconds remaining, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw a short pass to LaDainian Tomlinson over the middle for 3 yards. Tomlinson turned and made a handoff-type lateral to wide receiver Chris Chambers, who attempted to pitch the ball to a teammate only to have safety Troy Polamalu scoop it up and score from the 12.

Both teams left the field on what looked to be a game-ending play, but were called back by the officials for the extra-point attempt. At that point, the replay official called for a review.

After watching the play, Green initially announced the ruling on the field was upheld and the touchdown counted. But the officiating crew huddled again before the extra-point attempt and changed the call, deciding that an illegal forward pass should have ended the play.

Green, in a postgame interview with a pool reporter, said that call was errant.

"We should have let the play go through in the end, yes," Green said.

Watch the NFL.COM video highlights of the game here.

Most people would say so what, either way the Steelers win. (And by a score never before seen in the NFL). But bettors are going nuts.

See, bookmakers had installed the Steelers as 4.5 to 5-point favorites, meaning that final play meant the difference between the Steelers covering that spread and rewarding those who bet on them, and the Chargers beating that spread and rewarding those who bet on them.

In other words, for gambling purposes, the Steelers were behind with five seconds to go, won the game with a miracle touchdown and then had that touchdown taken away by a officiating error.

WebWire reports:

An estimated $100 million was wagered worldwide on the Pittsburgh/San Diego game, according to RJ Bell of Pregame.com. Approximately 66% of that money was on the Steelers; with only 34% on the Chargers.

”If the touchdown was properly upheld, Steelers bettors would have won about $32 millions instead of losing big. This admittedly incorrect call resulted in a $64 million swing in favor of the bookies.” said Bell.

Yet another reminder that there's a whole separate "game" going on out there during major sporting events that announcers and reporters seldom take much note of.

There is and was NO threat. This is clearly a hypothetical and humorous question. Even if SS peaked at this, they could clearly tell right away there is no threat. They're probably laughing at it. Relax people.

*WE* know you didn't say anything wrong and of course there was no threat. THEY do not fuck around with that stuff and they do NOT laugh. I could tell you a 100% true story about a photographer being hauled away by SS in a microsecond for using the word "shoot" in the way a PHOTOGRAPHER would use that word at a presidential event (Reagan), and that was over 25 years ago.

Man, that ref really did blow that call, huh? Do you think the game was fixed? I think when he went to review the play, he called Vegas to see what they needed. Discuss...please.
