OT: I need a new car. Help me out... foreign or domestic?

I am getting ready to turn in my Cadillac Escalade after paying the last lease payment. I need to get into a new vehicle by December 11 when I drop off the Escalade. Things have slowed down for my business a little, so I am not going the Escalade route again. I have been looking at a Chrysler Aspen or a Dodge Durango, but with the fate of the Big 3 in limbo right now, I'm wondering if I would be better off buying a Nissan, Toyota, or Honda. I mean, how do I know the U.S. companies will even be around to service my vehicle? I'm sure I am not the only one who is waiting on a vehicle purchase to see if the U.S. automakers go bankrupt. This is probably hurting their sales even more.

What would you do?

WOW from an Excalade to a Dodge... a little downturn???? Okay if you can swing it we have the Honda CRV awesome in winter... but if you want to buy american get the Ford Escape and not the Dodge...
there is a reason american cars are not faring very well.. its called DODGE..... now some swear by chvy some swear by ford... does anyone swear by Dodge???

anyway... if you feel patriotic is by the Ford Escapei think that comes as HYBRED now...... and if you want durable reliable by the honda CRV, or maybe the ACCORD Hybred.

I had a Dodge Durango for three years from 2001-2004 and it was great. The Chrysler Aspen is about the same vehicle with a better-looking grille. I am looking at the fully-loaded versions for around $45k, which is $20k less than the Escalade. Plus, Chrysler is willing to give me a $10k discount on a new 2008 model... which brings it down to $35k. They both have pretty much the same features as the Escalade (navigation, rear camera, heated seats, Sirius radio, 20GB MP3 hard drive, 20" rims, DVD, etc.) except for the heated steering wheel. Maybe you're thinking of the $20k stripped-down Durango? The loaded one is a very nice vehicle.

I've owned a Honda (Acura) and now own a Toyota (Lexus) and both are superb cars.

I highly doubt I'll buy an American made car again with the experience I've had with my foreign cars.

I watch some kind of auto show on PBS (MotorTrend?) and they always praise the high safety standards and rigorous test conditions of BMW cars.

I have a 2005 Durango and it's a great SUV. While I don't love all Chrysler vehicles (I hate ALL Jeeps), they've come a long way from the Dodge Aries K of the 1980's!

I've owned a Mercedes, BMW, and a Lexus, and I can tell you that it's really not close between the three auto makers. There is a reason that Lexus has been the number one auto maker in customer satisfaction for every year since their company started. I had a 2004 LX 470 until recently and it was a SUPERB vehicle. The LX is at the high end of the luxury SUV market, but Lexus makes a GX model that competes quite nicely with the X5.

We bought a 2001 Benz E430 in early 2001, it has 70,000 miles on it now..it's been a GREAT vehicle, only have had the oil changed, period..plan to keep that baby til the wheels fall off. Seriously.

If you want to save $$$ and get a steal. What ever you look for make it a year old or so, but not brand new. Even with the big cash incentives, you can save even more with a low milage currrent year model. This is especially true with the domestics.

If you buy a Honda and take care of it, you shouldn't even have to service it beyond periodic tuneups for many, many years. That's a pretty easy choice.

I have owned nothing but American cars and probably will til the day I die. I have had remarkable luck with these cars. My Buick Riveria had over 300,000 miles when I hit a pole. My Camaro was probably the shittiest of the litter and that had almost 160,000 on it. My Trans Am pace car never gave me one problem. I sold it to a friend that promptly blew it up. My Chevy Blazer had 175,000 maintenance free miles. I had an 87 Monte Carlo that logged almost 200,000 miles and my current Monte Carlo just turned 104,000 maintenance free miles. I also had a 1972 Bonneville, but we won't talk about that one. It had an unfortunate end. I think that's all of them.

I had a honda civic that finally died after 425000 miles. ALl i had to do to it other than normal maintenance ( oil, tires , etc was replace the cv joints once each side .

From what I can tell, they are the same vehicle, in terms of engine and performance. The Hybrid model has about 2HP less and both models have a V6 engine. I don't know the exact mileage difference, but my experience with SUV's is that the Hybrid models don't get a significant number more miles per gallon. I have driven the RX numerous times (that's what the dealer always gave me as a loaner car when I brought the LX in for maintenance), and it's a nice little vehicle. That said, I'm 6'4", so the leg room wasn't ideal for a guy of my height. From what I can tell, all the same options are available on both models. I personally believe the X5 is a nicer vehicle than the RX, but I would probably take the GX over the X5 and would take the LX over the nicest X5 money can buy.
