OT: I need a new car. Help me out... foreign or domestic?

Voted Worlds #1 Most Loonatic Fanbase

If you were to buy a new car right now, would it be foreign (non-USA) or domestic (USA)?

I would buy a U.S. vehicle and not worry about their potential looming bankruptcy.

I would buy a non-U.S. vehicle because it would be too risky to buy a U.S. vehicle.

I was thinking the same thing if I were to buy a new car.
US car makers are in deep shit,I guess anything would help.
Hell you might get a great deal on a GM or a Ford!

The "Buy American" mantra is a noble and patriotic one, but it's always seemed a bit disingenuous to me. I believe all consumers should spend their hard earned money on quality products, whether built in this country or somewhere else. I have zero problem holding the labor force in this country accountable for the products that we produce. The reality is that Americans simply build inferior automobiles, and have for many, many years. It's not just a coincidence that more foreign cars are sold in this country than American cars. The next time someone tells you to "Buy American", ask them what brand TV they own. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it won't be a GE TV!

Things have slowed down for my business a little, so I am not going the Escalade route again. I have been looking at a Chrysler Aspen or a Dodge Durango, but with the fate of the Big 3 in limbo right now, I'm wondering if I would be better off buying a Nissan, Toyota, or Honda. I mean, how do I know the U.S. companies will even be around to service my vehicle? I'm sure I am not the only one who is waiting on a vehicle purchase to see if the U.S. automakers go bankrupt. This is probably hurting their sales even more.

What would you do?

If it comes to a point where the big 3 have shut their doors, getting your vehicle serviced will be at the bottom of your worries list and being 1st in line in the soup kitchen would be on top of our lists :)
If you want to lease another vehicle, both GM and Chrysler are out of the picture. So you could go either with Ford/Lincoln, or go with BMW, Volvo.
I'd recommend test driving a Volvo XC90 before you make any decisions,,,,,That way you go half foreign half american  no but seriously , they are the safest most quiet SUVs on the market right now. Volvo set the standards for Safety in the auto industry!

You're smoking crack if you buy anything from either GM, Ford or Chrysler. The big three are fucked, irregardless of a bailout or bankruptcy.

If it's a bailout, you're going to be buying into a company that has been doing it wrong for over 30 years....and will continue to do it wrong after the bailout.

If it's a bankruptcy, I sure as hell hope the big three sheds their pension obligations under bankruptcy protection but keeps their warranty obligations....however, you can't be sure of anything in this financial climate.

Seriously....to buy anything but a honda or a toyota right now, is playing with fire...

The only problem if they shed their pension obligations is that would fall to the PBGC. Although that is not taxpayer funded, if they have to take GM or all Big 3 pensions, they may eventually need additional revenue to fund that i.e. taxpayer money. Good for them, bad for us.

I highly doubt I'll buy an American made car again with the experience I've had with my foreign cars.

Sorry but Fords? The only way I'd drive one home is if it's given to me. :P

My first car was a Ford Escort, which was supposed to be an american car, loaded with Japanese parts and design (the Mazda Protege's twin). It worked fine until 62,000 KM and then had no END of problems. By the time it hit 100,000 KM, I had spent thousands on repair work.

My next car, a Toyota, just hit 110,000 KM. It has had 1/10th the amount of work done on it as the Escort.

Yes, it sucks about the "big three". I'm seeing it in Southern Ontario where the Canadian headquarters of the Big Three are located and where there are many factories and parts companies that supply to Canada and the US.

At the same time, there's a Toyota factory up the road, a Honda factory not far away and a Suzuki plant not far away either. The "buy North American" mentality doesn't make sense to me when all the companies are providing jobs in my area.

And, the reality is, I have had far, far, far fewer problems with my Toyota, than my Ford. Hell, my grandfather and my father-in-law are both tried and true "Chevy's rule" drivers but have switched to Toyota because of one too many rounds at the garage with their Chevy vehicles.

I don't want to see the big three go under, competition is a great thing for the consumer and for innovation; plus they employ a lot of people. But there are serious business and quality issues that they need to address.

I heard "Fix or Repair Daily" :-) And yeah, it was shocking because the Escort was supposed to be a near clone of the Protege. Regardless of parts or design, it was still assembled in a Ford plant and serviced by a Ford dealer and their endless, "While were were changing your oil, we noticed ..."

But you know, I don't think smug Chevy owners really have it any better. I had a buddy who swore by GM (his family grew up working at the GM plant in Oshawa) but he and his parents might as well have invested in the towing company for all the times that their Grand Prix and Impalas were getting towed.

His dad, after years of swearing, "I will only buy GM because I support the local economy and so should everyone else!!!" finally realized that his own economy was being impacted by the endless repair bills and bought a Honda.

Not to mention that many Americans will pay extra for that quality . If we are willing to spend 5k extra for a Toyota or Honda in tariff tax alone, that should tell the U.S. manufacturers that we are not pleased with their product.

That's all it tells me is how spoiled Americans are. Our economy needs to suffer a little to get people heads out of the clouds and realize just because we want something doesn't mean we need it or should have it.

Not when it comes to cars. I want to be in a safe vehicle that will get me to my job everyday without hassle and minimum damage if I get into an accident. Howe many people get killed because of car mechanic failures in traffic at high speed? I know imports fail too but not at the rate of our local product and I don't see the need to take a gamble, when the cost of something breaking could be serious injury or death. If I want status I can buy a Cadillac, if I want some thing that has been designed with rigorous safety standards enforced, I'm going BMW.

Police departments drive fords or chevys , and who drives at a higher rate of speed than them?? I don't agree that they don't have safety standards just because they are American cars. Do you have actual statisitics on all of these American cars on the roads causing all of these deaths and injuries? I'm pretty sure most accidents are caused by HUMAN failure. You cant' tell me it's the vehicle in the highest percentage of those accidents. No way. And not everyone can afford such luxuries as the safety of a BMW or Cadillac. Lucky you.

In general, cars are one of the worst investments one makes. Just get me from point A to B is all I care about, hence (for SteveW) the shitty malibu.
