OT: I need a new car. Help me out... foreign or domestic?

Voted Worlds #1 Most Loonatic Fanbase

Moderator: Andrew

If you were to buy a new car right now, would it be foreign (non-USA) or domestic (USA)?

I would buy a U.S. vehicle and not worry about their potential looming bankruptcy.

I would buy a non-U.S. vehicle because it would be too risky to buy a U.S. vehicle.

That's how I feel. It's just a car. I don't need status and I don't care what I look like driving in it. And there are no guarantees with safety no matter what you are driving. It depends on the type of accident. My pontiac hit the back of a ford while I was braking after going about 40 and we bounced off each other with no damage. If one of us was in a big foreign SUV, there WOULD have been damage just because of the sheer size of the SUV and where the bumpers would have met. It has way more to do with the logistics of the accident.

US car makers are in deep shit,I guess anything would help.
Hell you might get a great deal on a GM or a Ford!

The "Buy American" mantra is a noble and patriotic one, but it's always seemed a bit disingenuous to me. I believe all consumers should spend their hard earned money on quality products, whether built in this country or somewhere else. I have zero problem holding the labor force in this country accountable for the products that we produce. The reality is that Americans simply build inferior automobiles, and have for many, many years. It's not just a coincidence that more foreign cars are sold in this country than American cars. The next time someone tells you to "Buy American", ask them what brand TV they own. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it won't be a GE TV!

Not to mention that many Americans will pay extra for that quality . If we are willing to spend 5k extra for a Toyota or Honda in tariff tax alone, that should tell the U.S. manufacturers that we are not pleased with their product.

That's all it tells me is how spoiled Americans are. Our economy needs to suffer a little to get people heads out of the clouds and realize just because we want something doesn't mean we need it or should have it.

Not when it comes to cars. I want to be in a safe vehicle that will get me to my job everyday without hassle and minimum damage if I get into an accident. Howe many people get killed because of car mechanic failures in traffic at high speed? I know imports fail too but not at the rate of our local product and I don't see the need to take a gamble, when the cost of something breaking could be serious injury or death. If I want status I can buy a Cadillac, if I want some thing that has been designed with rigorous safety standards enforced, I'm going BMW.

Police departments drive fords or chevys , and who drives at a higher rate of speed than them?? I don't agree that they don't have safety standards just because they are American cars. Do you have actual statisitics on all of these American cars on the roads causing all of these deaths and injuries? I'm pretty sure most accidents are caused by HUMAN failure. You cant' tell me it's the vehicle in the highest percentage of those accidents. No way. And not everyone can afford such luxuries as the safety of a BMW or Cadillac. Lucky you.

Just because I used BMW as an example doesn't mean I am saying everyone should drive one. I'm talking about imports in general, Honda civics, Toyota Corollas and such. The police department drives those big American cars because of the size and the horsepower under the hood. Go look behind the station at their autoyard, those cars break every day. I never said human failure wasn't the number one cause of accidents and Mother Nature is probably second. Two things beyond our control, but buying a quality automobile is some thing we can control. If I can buy a Honda Fit loaded with airbags and ABS and STILL get better gas mileage than its American peers (check link below) that just makes sense to purchase that vehicle doesn't it.

If they break everyday it's because there is no car more abused. And I think everyday would be an exaggeration. Some cop cars are used 24/7. And they drive their entire shift at times. And my husband has one in the driveway, and other than normal maintainence, I don't hear him complain at all. Sorry, a car is just a car to me. It gets me where I need to go. Guess I'm just too practical.

I'm not cracking on you, but if someone has to drive 50 miles each way to work every day, safety and gas issues are going to be a factor in their decision on what kind of vehicle to buy. It's not a want, it's a legitimate need and one shouldn't have to worry about the vehicle's country of origin or bad business practices by another manufacturer when choosing which car to buy.

True. But ALL of our domestic cars gave us problem after problem after problem, over and over and over again. And we take good care of our cars too, so it was never because of neglect with maintenance or anything else. I don't hear nearly the amount of complaints about Japanese cars as domestic cars :P lol. I know darn well our Toyotas could break at any moment too, ANY car can, but I doubt it way more than I would if they were Fords or Dodges, which we've owned before, and were all big piles of crap with wheels, lol.

My brother-in-law had a Honda in college that he never even bothered to change the oil in for FOUR years (no I'm not kidding, lol), let alone anything else, and that damn car still ran just fine when he traded it in for a newer one. NO WAY in HELL any Ford or Dodge or Chevy would run like that, lol.

That's Honda for you. A friend of mine bought an '82 Honda Civic wagon in 1995. In late 1998, my ex and I bought it from her for his mom, who needed a car. In 2001, she killed it by doing something absolutely stupid - it did NOT die on its own.
