OT: Anyone Use Vonage?

I just called and ordered Vonage. My damn phone bill has been about $140.00 per month for two Verizon land lines. Vonage set me up for a $50.00 plan for two lines with unlimited local and long distance. Does anyone here use Vonage? Does it work pretty good? Any complaints?

Works fine for me. Have used it for 3+ years with very little, if any problems. It helps to have a strong broadband connection. I have a 10MB line due to working from home, so mulititasking online is never really a problem. They have some great features (Simulring etc.).

I use it, works fine. Only issue is when the Internet goes down you lose your phone. But, with cellphones, not a big deal.

Only limitation would be if power or high speed internet service goes out so does your phone. You may want to consider a battery backup for power outages.

Also, make sure you register your phone lines with the closest 911 center otherwise they won't know where to dispatch if your phone number isn't registered. Vonage wil tell you how to do this.

My cell is my primary number and if my Vonage number is inoperable (power outage, internet outage or shut off) it will automatically roll to my cell phone.

I do like Vonage because of the huge cost savings and the quality is pretty good. Once in a while have a bad connection, just simply try the call again and it works perfectly. I do work for Verizon and Vonage is still a lot cheaper than my so called employee discount.

I have a T1 that never goes down, so it should be pretty stable.

Agree with the above. I just got Vonage for my business number, and will soon be switching my home number to Vonage as well.

As to the no phone when the power is out issue, you can get a bare-bones basic number for the phone company for around 12.00 or so a month. Even with that you're still looking at 20 - 30 dollars less a month for two totally separate lines from Vonage AND a local line in emergency, then a single number from your telephone company.

Another cool thing for me is that I can take my Vonage box with me when I travel, plug it up the internet, and still receive calls just like when I'm at home.

We're strictly cell now. We never used the home phone anymore. If it weren't for solicitors it would have never rang.

It is...and works very well. Also, the online features of Vonage are great, and if you have voicemail, you can listen online, as well as via an email attachment that gets sent when someone leaves a message.

IMO, the only reason to have a "land-line" now is for emergency back up (no power, internet) and / or home security systems that need a hard line to send alerts to the monitoring company. Again, 12 bucks or less will cover that.

I work for Vonage, and have the service. Make sure you go to your online acct and set up your Network Availability Number, that way if you have a power or internet outtage, calls will auto forward to NAN. But only in that situation. There is also a separate Call Forwarding feature for regular call forwarding usage.

The service does work great, also if any friends/relatives decide to hop on the bandwagon w/you.....Make sure you use the Refer A Friend page on your online acct and make sure they use the link that gets sent to them in the email that goes out to them or neither of you will get the RAF credit.

Questions on going with Vonage:

--can I still keep the same home (land line) phone #? Have this # for 20 yrs; don't want a new one.

--can I still use all the phones in my house to make/receive calls?

--on an incoming call, does it ring on all the phones (just as it does now)?

--I can still call any place that uses land line, right?

--this only works if I have the computer on? Internet have to be on, too?

Go to Vonage.com and put your phone # in the Keep Your Phone # box and it will tell you if it's available to be transferred.

If that is the only phone # in your home, then yes you can have it ring on all extensions by having the connection from the street disabled at the box connected to the outside of your house.

If your Internet is not working Vonage will not work. If it turns off when you turn your computer off (which it shouldn't) then it won't work.

I love Vonage. My wife has relatives in Italy and we can talk to them for 1 cent/minute...so for less than 2 bucks we can catch up nicely!

The service is great, just make sure you have good broadband service too.

Thats a great price,Stu.,.... but here is my question. lets say you would get TWO accounts, with two local US phone numbers. Can your family use the 2nd line overseas (with them hooking up the 2nd box and paying the monthly $24/m fee) and make FREE calls to eachother ??

Yes you can do that. In fact many people who have family members in the military do exactly that. You don't have to have 2 accts if you don't want to, can just add a second line to the acct w/a separate device for that line. It's all up to you and what you prefer. Either way, that second number would be a US number.

I've heard that the E-911 (enhanced 911, meaning operators immediately get your location when you call in) does not work at all with Vonage. I don't have Vonage, but have a close friend who has it. He loves it, but I find the service a bit inconsistent when we talk. There is almost always an echo. It distracts the hell out of me, but he said he's used to it.

I have it and I have the enhanced E911 now i didnt use to . I hae had the service for over 5 years and absolutely love it

I have the 14.99 plan and never have a phone bill over $20 a month

You set up the 9-1-1 feature when you get it and put the location where you want the responders to go. Never had to use it, thank God, but thanks to my daughter I got it tested, she picked up the phone and started dialing numbers and hit 9-1-1...cops were at the door in minutes.

Would Vonage save me on my $57 a month cable phone bill (bundled)? Also, has anyone ever attempted to use cellular repeaters to increase their cell signal in their homes? I don't get decent reception in my home, so I keep my land line and cell which is very pricey. Thanks.

I have tv and internet bundle at home with vonage as my phonage as my phone service my cable phone and internet run my under a hundred a month and i have all the premo channels
