OT: An original from me. An attempt at hard melodic rock.

Postby Liquid_Drummer » Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:28 am

I played all the instruments sang and wrote this attempt at hard rock with a melodic rock root. Trying to write in a way that can appeal to both fans of hard and melodic rock. Its an early idea in the vocal department as the vocal melody and even lyrics are subject to change. The music I am happy with.. Tell me what you think... I am really proud of the middle section which sounds a bit like Lay it on the line meets the police.

Nice tune - has a nickelback / AOR 80's throwback vibe to it. Just need to bring the production values up. Playing is good throughout too! Like the doubletime police midsection too.

This could be on Modern Rock radio for sure.

my Sunday mornin' .02

cheers,

- Brandon

You kidding me? F**king kick ass in my opinion. Everyone on this site seems to be so very creative and talented. Now, I don't have the greatest ear for music, so I cannot tell you about pitch, tone lyrics, blah, blah, boop, I just go with what I like, and I love the harmony. Welp, like I always say, DO THE DAMNED THANG!! Good luck, MBPL

THx for the thumbs up folks.. JUst trying to put the feelers out to see if I am headed in the right direction. The production values wont go up unless I spend some big cash. The drums were recorded with one mic..hehe

I am limited in the lyrical dept. I have to find what sounds like it flows well with the music as it comes to me before the lyrics.

Blue grey the sky beneath my feet.
Oceans of time are lost to me.
Cant think of keeping on, no interest in the dawn.
Dont look at me when i'm asleep.

Chorus

There must me somethin I have missed
Some little thing I cant resist.
Im just lookin for a reason to exist.

Some way to carry all this weight
I'm not the one that I should hate.
Im just searching for a reason to exist.

Dont make me look me in the eye.
Cant face a life filled full of lies.
I've faked it all this time.
Cant seem to make it rhyme. (this line came when I said to it too myself as I was stuck on this part for a bit.. Kinda funny to me that it worked.)
Just want to keep my dignity.

Chorus

There must me something I have missed
Some little thing I cant resist.
Im just lookin for a reason to exist.

Some way to carry all this weight
I'm not the one that I should hate.
Im just searching for a reason to exist.

Hey man, I've heard your Journey covers before and they rocked. But, for some reason, I can't get the file to play on either of my browsers from that site... you got a myspace or could you even e-mail it to me? I'd love to hear it...

Hey LD, I think this is a really great start. You mention that there would have to be a lot more money involved for the production values to go up, but I want to encourage you to work with what you have to continue making improvements in your production and learning more about your software. You don't have to be an engineer or a producer, but the more you learn about getting your demo as close to what you'd like for it to sound, the happier you will be....And home recording software has really leveled the playing field in a lot of ways.

I'm not going near Flip again, that thing fucked with all my stream settings and such for certain sites before I formatted. If LD can't get me a copy of the song I'll just check it out on a friend's PC soon enough.

What I need are good mics of every kind. Everything was run through a guitar pod 2.0 including the vocals.. Thats what i had to work with hehe. The drums are just one mic in the room and thats it. Everything else is a direct and the vocals were done on a sm57. Not ideal. I was using Sonar 5 on pc.

Shopping list..

Presonus 16 channel firewire mic pre amp with firewire.
Pencil condensers for over head on drums or acoustic instruments.
A decent Akg kick mic.
A large capsule tube condenser for vocals.

Now I need about 3 grand at least. Some day soon.. Taxes arnt that far way.

Get yourself a nice new iMac and max out the ram. Buy Logic 8 Pro. There are more drum loops than you'll ever need, as well as MIDI instruments, loops and samples. Get yourself a good preamp. I use a MOTU Ultralite but that's a 10 channel firewire and runs about $500 bucks. There are stereo preamps you can find that will do the job just fine. Don't even try to get involved in micing drums. Let someone else worry about that. You get a good scratch guitar/bass track down with loops in Garageband or Logic 8, then find a nice tube mic - MXL makes some very good ones for less than $600. When you get a SONG that you feel good about, then you go track out the people who know better than you how to make that demo into a nice big track.

Jeremey...I hate to butt-in here, but the man just said he needs about 3 grand to get set-up. You said "No no no", and then gave him a list of stuff he needs that's probably $2500 to $3000 at least!  I agree with him that stuff isn't cheap.

Amen brother! One of my keyboards alone cost over $3400.00! I've sunk a lot of money into this "Dream" of mine, but it's definitely worth it.

Au contraire my friend. Without the Ultralite you can find a very nice stereo preamp....And still come in around 2600 bucks. But the return on the investment for the mac would very much outstrip the initial investment.

My recorder only cost me $1400. My keyboard is what I was referring to that cost over $3400. I got a hell of a deal on the recorder, as it ran $2200 at the time. I bought mine off of ebay and it was brand new, never opened.
