Should Herbie Herbert Write a Book About Journey?

Postby SherriBerry » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:54 pm

I'm not sure if this has been covered in another thread, but I was reading Matt Carty's 'Castles Burning' interview with Herbie again and considered his last comment that not one book has been written about Journey. I thought who better to write one than the person who created the band and knows its history first hand (and is the only person not bound by a confidentiality agreement)?

Granted, it would be severely biased against Steve Perry and full of some egocentric horn-blowing, but that's part of the entertainment factor. Any Journey fan would know that the perspective is skewed a bit, but at least it wouldn't be sugarcoated - Herbie doesn't hold back on anyone, even Neal.

Personally, I would like to see an autobiography done by all of the band members themselves, like Motley Crue's 'The Dirt', where they each write a chapter and no one can read the other's and change their own before it's published. Since there is a snowball's chance in hell of that happening, I think this would be the best alternative - Herbie is an interesting character in his own right and I thoroughly enjoy reading his interviews.

Herbie would need to get over his hatred and bitterness towards Steve Perry before he could write an unbiased bio of Journey. His interviews seem to be filled with rantings and rages about Perry, which would be a big turnoff for many Journey fans.

I would definitely read that book, and I don't read much. It shows don't it? Image I would definitely get that one though.

Herbie also seems to have an attitude towards Jonathan Cain; though, to a much lesser degree. He shouldn't write it. (He's all over the place with his thoughts.) Someone else should with him as one of the sources. But, unfortunately, none of the band members can speak about the innerworkings of Journey.

Writing it would make the truth come out as silence would be seen as confirmation of what he has to say.
The old “Steve's to classy to respond” mantra won't fly if the book has even a speck of success on the market.

Herbie says alot of shit about Perry but if it wasnt for him then Herbert wouldnt of made anywhere near the amount of money that he did ( /perry wouldnt of made the money without him either)

That's exactly what needs to happen. An unbiased outsider with the inside knowledge.

Herbie's book would certainly be colorful, but would be biased for sure.

Andrew, you should. And as you know from interviewing him, you've one great source in Herbie, and I'm sure you know of others in the industry. 8)

I'm surprised it hasn't been done already. Not sure I would ever have the time or energy (or sanity)...

But there's a lot of history and personalities to draw from...

I would buy it definitely. Think about it, then maybe you could sell the rights to make a movie or TV movie  . Now, who would play the guys?

Thanks :)

Thing is...the time needed to do a proper history from day 1.... wow...

And a history post-Perry would be just as interesting, but less complete and not as attractive to non-hard core fans.

Telling the truth has nothng to do with bitterness and hatred. If Herbie ever defamed Nostrildamus in any way you can bet your 2 inch dick that he would be sued in about 8 seconds. Perry can't sue because Hamburger Herbie hasn't lied.

You could get Herbie to write the foreword for it. Get Herbie to help you write it, share the profits with him, and get him to finance the publishing.

Isn't Sterling Whitaker working on a Journey book as we speak? That's what he's posted here and down in the Styx forum a couple of times.

Herbie would probably burn Andrew out from touring.

Hey, let me tell you something. Herbie did a lot for that band, but when he sat around the table and tried to take majority ownership of all things Journey and Perry was the only one that stood up for the band, you don't see that shit written anywhere. And I know from unbiased sources. So take what you will with a grain of salt. Herbie was a great business man in a world of nearly great businsess men, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Take Castles Burning and put it in the fuckin' Romantic Fiction section of barnes and noble.

Unbiased meaning people who would watch that "tennis match" between Lee Phillips and Herbie Herbert. If they were so anti-Perry at the time, they could have done something about it. The point is, Herbie wanted majority ownership of the band, and Neal, Jonathan, and Ross owe their post 1986 career to Perry.

And to underscore any fucking question that I may be one of the best informed sources on this board, I challenge you to find anyone in Perry or the Journey camp to deny that statement.
