OT: Question about Paul Rodgers Vox Recovery

Postby TRAGChick » Wed Nov 26, 2008 6:25 am

Hey all...

Is this true?

I remember reading/hearing somewhere that Paul's voice had turned into absolute $#!T.

He basically destroyed it....(you can see where this is going....)

Then, miraculously....he worked really hard, did all the right vocal regimens, was more responsible for his health / well-being, and now he fronts Queen....

....sounding like the Paul Rodgers we all know and love. 8)

Does anyone out there know exactly what he did to get "better"?

I think you might have the wrong person.Rodgers has toured every year forever, If he had vocal issues, it could only have been for a few weeks, as he is always on the road. Most critics compliment him for never altering his vocal style and staying pretty steady over the years.
No one that I can see have ever mentioned him slowly losing his voice, then resurrecting it again.

Now, If Perry has lost his voice, no surgery or natural herb is going to bring it back to the point that he can tour with it again, in my opinion. He could record again of course, after all, we know the power of Computer music software and it's ability now to make the weakest vocalist sound fantastic as long as thy don't have to replicate it in a live environment.

Yep, it is crazy. It's tough doing mostly original music though. The fact that some receive it well is damn sure a testament to it though. Keep on rockin Trag band.

People at bars want to sing along...period. You have to throw a few covers in there. If you want to, in a sense, remain artistic, then you rework some covers and add your own input, but people want to sing along. You nail a few covers or give them your own take and you'll capture more of the audience and probably get them to participate more. If I may be brutally honest, it has been my experience that when I go see an all "originals" band that I have hated them 99% of the time. People wanna get drunk and sing along. You have to, at the very least, allow them to do so intermittently.

True, It's all about walking that thin line. You've got to remember that you're always one step away from being a live Karaoke act on any given night, depending on how the crowd interprets what you're trying to do up there.

Here's our covers...that we do VERY well, if I do say so myself:

Walkin’ on the Moon
Rapture
One way or another
Any Way You Want It

That's as far as we got....we had about 5 others ready to go....

One way or another-Trade both of these in for "Call Me." People want to sing with something upbeat that they know.
Any Way You Want It-Ugh...one of the gayest Journey songs ever. Try "Runaway" by Bon Jovi instead

This is obviously all just my opinion, but as a 20 year "bar band dude" I think it might help. 8)

You may be on to something, tho....

I've TOLD Mark to go w/ different songs....

Let me get your opinions, as the "Music Listening Public"

What do YOU want to hear......and remember - a Female Vocalist has to sing it.

Rock Rock (till You Drop)
If Mariah can sing "Bringin' on the heartbreak" you should be okay doing at least one Def Leppard song. They've got plenty of good anthem type singalong material.

I really hear Debbie Harry in your voice. You also have a cool punk/80's "new wave" sound in your vox. "Call Me" is a no-brainer to my ears. I bet you could also do a killer version of "Blister In The Sun" and that's always a bar favorite. Not to mention that it's perfect for your vox. If your crowd is young enough I'd throw a No Doubt tune in there. They have some killer drum work on a few songs and that might be enough to convince Mark. Gonna go look at some old 80's lists I used for trivia/name that tune contests and see what I come up with.

Ironically enough, we were MORE APPRECIATED when we did only Originals - now that I think about it.

I think TRAG would do well to open for Prog and/or Original bands at Showcase Stages like "Toad's" - I want us to be the "go-to" CT band for such events.

Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac. I know Buckingham sings that, but it would work. The opening keyboard riff is instantly identifiable.

Oops; sorry....I didn't see your responses!!

Yeah; Mark would definitely go for the Blondie / No Doubt thing..."Blister"? yeah; no-brainer....I think Mark hates it, tho....

What about "Garbage"? "I'm only happy when it rains..." - or is that too 90s-depressing?

What about Pink's "So What?" suuuure Mark'd go for THAT.... :D

There's a band that spurred off of 7th Heaven, our girl Tamara fronts it, He Said She Said (http://www.myspace.com/hsssrocks), your vocals are similar in sound... she does songs like "So What"... I kind of had a shot of Patron amongst my few cocktails Saturday night so I don't recall most of the setlist, but I'll pay attention at the next gig I go to and let you know some more suggestions. 8)

Unless this is from a long time ago, I don't think this is correct.
I've got a friend that played with Paul for about the last ten years (unfortunately, he recently passed away). Paul's voice has always held up really well touring. He's very fond of ginger root tea (blech!). He's very adamant about his vocal rituals while on tour.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

So what is the sound you are comfortable with?
Souxie and the banshees
Pat Benatar
Joan Jett
QuarterFlash

What style are going for when you sing the original stuff so your covers can be in the same vain musically?

Well....

I'm TRYing to sound "New Wave"- ish....but apparently, it comes out sounding like Grace Slick..... :?
I'm not UNhappy with that...but, that's not what I want to sound like.

I want to sound like a cross between Berlin & No Doubt, with a touch of B-52s thrown in....guess I should have a "lighter touch" to my vocals.
