I'm being encouraged to do a one or two semester International student exchange in 2009/2010. I'm currently tossing up between the University of Wales in Cardiff, or the University of California in Berkley. My University has an exchange program with Berkley, which means that I don't need to change the way I pay for my fees, and the transference of accreditation is automatic; they have a great English and History faculty, which covers my BA, and they have a great Film Studies course, which covers my BMedia. I have a lot of friends in northern California, and it gives me a year to go and finally see some the bands I love (and I listen to you Americans talk about seeing while turning green with envy). The drawback is that I won't be able to work in the US, so I need to go into debt to do it, or else do an 'au pair' scheme and swap housekeeping for room and board. The University of Wales has one of the best Media degrees in the world, Cardiff is my 'other' home town, and as I have dual nationality, I can work while I'm there without any issues and I've got a good shot at getting work part time with the BBC. The drawback is that it doesn't have an exchange program with my university, so I have to make all the arrangements myself, go through a painful submissions process to get the exchange recognised, pay all my fees directly upfront to them and therefore have to pay tax twice (taking money out of Australia and into the UK) and if anything goes wrong, I'm on my own.
So, which one do I choose?
