OT - Celestial Smiley Face

Postby Arianddu » Mon Dec 01, 2008 11:55 am

I have no idea if this will be able to be seen in places other than Australia, but it's pretty cool anyway! A friend sent me these details:

"On Monday night Venus, Jupiter and a three-day-old crescent Moon, will appear as a smiley face above the western horizon.
The unusual astronomical event will be close enough to see with the naked eye, any time from 9pm (AEDT) onwards.
But if you miss it, you will have to wait another five years before the formation appears again."

I found this website that gives a few more details (looks like the northern hemisphere will get a frowny face :( ) http://www.sydneyobservatory.com.au/blog/?p=1428
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Bugger me....just walked outside to check and sure as shit...there's a big smiley face looking down on me.

Bizzare! But cool.

It is so cool! Unfortunately there is too much light pollution where I am for my camera to take a decent picture, but it really is amazing!!

The only info I got out of that is that "Andrew is always in the dark"

Snicker not, ye T-Bone of little faith! I'm grinning like a lunatic - the solar system is smiling at me, and I'm just having to smile back.

This is about the best I can do with my digital and all the light pollution - hopefully the Wombat can get something a bit better...

Cool!!

I read a story saying that we (the US) would see this occur tonight (Monday night), but it didn't say anything about it taking a certain 'shape' or appearance.

From Yahoo news:

A slender crescent moon, just 15-percent illuminated, will appear in very close proximity to the two brightest planets in our sky, Venus and Jupiter.

I believe that you'll be getting a sad face, unfortunately.

Yup....you are correct on that.

I took this from my front door stairs - in CT, approx. 5PM: Kinda blurry:

Totally overcast in Chicago. Freaking snow. Thanks for snapping a pic of that Nora, was hoping to see what it was supposed to look like. :)

Just hope you Northern Hemispherers don't have a night of unexplained misery - I spent most of the night grinning like... well, a lunatic. Talking to friends about it this morning, pretty much all of them had the same reaction; it's kind of hard not to smile back when the sky is smiling at you. But if there's a suddenly spike in depresive behaviour in the northern side of the world, I guess we'll know why :D

I totally missed your smiley pic before, Ari. How cute! I admit, I did grin when I saw it, how could you not? :)

We have the frowny face. :( It's very bright considering we never even get to see stars in los angeles (well, heavenly stars that is).

It's too cloudy up here in the Rockies right now to see it-I can only see the glow of the moon behind the clouds. I hope that means snow soon!!!!!!!!

I saw this last night, and I showed my daughter as well. Too bad we up here in the States had the frown instead of the smile. :D

That's because you're a Grumblebum.
