Neal Schon's Solo Work

I have been listening to Neal's 'Beyond the Thunder' and 'Voice' a lot lately and
I'm wondering which of his solo cd's I should buy next. Any recommendations?

There is a lot of analysis/discussion on Journey's catalogue, but I thought it would
be great to get some input on Neal's solo work. I'm hoping he puts out a new cd
with his own vocals sometime soon too. He mentioned plans for that in the interview
posted by Peridactyl in another thread, but it was a few years ago. Does anyone
know if he's still planning to do so?

Late Nite is amazing - definitely one of my top 50 CD's of all time. It was Neal's first real solo album and encompassed everything that was great about Journey at the time. And to be honest, the instrumentals got me laid. A lot. lol Even though Neal's voice will never be confused with Perry's, it sounds pretty damn good on this one. There are also a few music videos floating out there. E

Agreed, Late Nite is amazing..love it. Althou Beyond the Thunder is my fave. :wink:

Electric World would also be a good choice for you cause it's 2 CDs for the price of one.

I LOVE every Neal Schon solo release, each one has something slightly different from the others to offer.

Neal is a HELL of a musician and I can't get enough of his work. Also, I'd LOVE to hear him sing more.... I massively dig the pre-Perry, solo, Schon/Hammer stuff that he sings on.

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't realize 'Late Nite' had vocals, so I'm really
looking forward to getting it and then 'Piranha Blues'. On my own I probably
would have bought 'I On U' first and I noticed no one recommended it.

I'd say that Late Nite was the most geared towards Journey fans, with Beyond the Thunder being a close second.

Piranha Blues is, I think, his worst work. What he's playing on that album isn't blues...certainly not when you compare the work to the body of great blues work out there...blues rock, yes...but then, even there....when you compare it to other blues rock works, it doesn't measure up at all.

Can't agree more though, with Late Nite. Definitely one of the greatest guitarist solo records to be put to tape. The Theme still gives me chills....

nope nope. gotta have I on U. it is veeeeeeeeeeery nice. I used to listen to it every night before lights out. ( i dig complete quiet right now--S-T-R-E-S-S!!!!!)

I love LATE NIGHT. 'Softly' is my favorite power ballad--yes, ahead of OA. "Rain's Coming Down' is ........uh....... yeah. sex-aaaaaaaaaaay. "Smoke of the Revolution" with Sheryl Crow is FABULOUS!! i could go on and on.

you MUST have them all.

It looks like I'll be adding to my Christmas list! 'Late Nite' is long out of production,
so I've ordered a used copy online but probably won't get it before January. Can't wait!

There is another thread about Journey's future and the thought that this next tour may be the last.
I was wondering if that happens, what is the probability of Neal touring solo? I could see opening
a club in San Francisco or wherever he is located now, but he seems to like being on the road.

neals solo work is very diverse from journey.
i have them all but start with a couple and expand at your liking
the schon and hammer stuff has the most vocals.
late nite is very good
pirana blues is the blues cd
voice is fantastic because you know the songs.
and most of the others is new age/jazzy mostly.
neal has not done very many if any solo shows
would love to book him to a similar thing that rik emmett does(a storyteller type thing)

I don't believe that. Neal hated being off that one year, so did Deen. Journey still has life left in them. It doesn't seem that Jon is weary of being in Journey. If Arnel can hang in there with his voice and being on the road, I see some more years yet for the band.

that would totally rock but i don't see it anytime soon. Neal will be Journeying well into the nursing home circuit. tour bus with a wheel chair lift--all of us in the front row in our motorized wheel chairs, wearing Depends while we gum our nachos.

I pulled up an old Free ~ Mr. Big youtube and almost didn't even recognize Paul Rodgers, it's from so long ago.

I remember a Mr. Big interview where they mentioned bands like Free being one of their influences.
