His name is D'angelo Williams. I'm not saying he is Barry, but he is the closest thing I've seen to Barry since.....Barry.

I saw him running over defensive players like they were children. He is, if not Barry, the next LT...

I have NEVER seen a running back, save Barry, able to reach the edge quicker than that cat....and he has Barry's jump-stop ankle breaking move.....simply amazing.....

I traded for him like eight weeks ago in my fantasy league, and haven't lost since. Now I'm 11-3 and on my way to the playoffs!

Dude...put down the crack pipe! Williams is having a great season, but let's not forget that this is his third season in the NFL. Prior to this season, he rushed for 700 and 500 yards with a career rushing TD total of FIVE in two seasons! Again, he's having a great season for a solid team, but he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with Sanders!

Williams also has less than half of the carries that Barry had each of those years. Sanders was THE featured back when he entered the league in '89. The other guys: Carl Painter, Paul Palmer, and Tony Paige.

BTW, Barry was no touchdown machine himself....

Payton was a great football player who was taken from this earth FAR too early. That said, Barry was absolutely the better back. It's not even debateable. He played on FAR worse teams, never had an offensive line, and had more moves than Payton could dream of having. Payton has a whopping 1400 more career rushing yards but played 3 more seasons than Sanders played. Payton averaged 4.4 yards per carry over the course of his career. Sanders averaged an astonishing 5.0 yards per carry, behind HORRENDOUS offensive lines, over the course of his career! I was fortunate to see both guys play a lot of games. I always thought Payton was a great player, but he simply wasn't in the same league as Sanders and I don't know anyone outside of Chicago who believes he was.

However, Payton played in two strike shortened years (9 games in 1982 and 12 in 1987) and his first 3 seasons they only played 14 regular season games compared to the 16 they played now.

Walter's offensive lines absolutely sucked until the mid-80's. They were notoriously bad. Walter was a more complete back, he could run (Sanders is obviously faster though), block (I never seen a highlight reel of Sanders' blocks like I have of Payton's), catch (Walter lead in career RB receptions until Faulk), and throw (9 career TD passes). Hell, he even punted a few times and returned kicks early in his career as well. Didn't the Lions use to take Sanders out of goal line and short yardage situations? Also, although Sanders's line may have been suspect at times, he had the luxury of playing in that spread out run and shoot bullshit. Had Walter had the luxury of going against 6 DBs, he may have still been running (at the time).

I don't care how many "strike shortened" seasons that Payton played in. Yards per carry is irrelevant in terms of how many games one guy has played versus the other. Sanders is one of the few running backs in the history of the NFL who has ever managed to average 5 yards per carry, over a 10 year career. Only 3 other running backs in the history of the NFL have ever averaged more than 5 yards per carry, and Payton isn't one of them! The fact that Barry did it behind some of the worst offensive lines ever assembled makes it that much more remarkable. I can tell you that if Barry ever ran behind Emmitt Smith's lines, he'd have every NFL record that exists for a running back and probably would have won 5 championships!

and, I might add....Emmitt owns the record because Barry retired.....

Walter played with just as bad of offensive lines until the mid-80's. The 5 yard average was helped by that playground offensive scheme they played. As far as Dallas's offensive line, that is why no one ever talks about Emmit as the greatest despite being the career leader. Obviously he was great back but he had the luxury of playing with a great offensive line and a balanced attack with a hall of fame quarterback and wide receiver. Payton never had any quarterback (Sanders really didn't either, they just had inflated stats with that shit system) and the Bears never had a wide receiver worth a damn. If I recall, Payton was the team's leading receiver for a number of years.

It doesn't change the fact that Sanders NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER had a decent offensive line!

Tito wrote: Walter was a more complete back

The question isn't who was "more complete". The question is which running back was better. A running back's primary job is to run with the football, and nobody did it better than Sanders!

Tito wrote: Didn't the Lions use to take Sanders out of goal line situations?

Yes, and he still finished with just 11 fewer career rushing TD's than Payton not playing on the goal line and playing 3 fewer seasons! What's your point? Sorry Taco Boy...You're fighting an argument that can't be won. I don't know of any football historians who rank Payton ahead of Sanders. There is life outside of Chicago and just because a player played for your team doesn't make him better! Payton was a great back, and I'd take him over a lot of backs (including Emmitt Smith). He simply wasn't Barry Sanders. Hell, I'd even take Bo Jackson ahead of Payton and a lot of other guys for the brief time he was in the NFL.
