New song on Myspace

Hey everyone,

I just got a song back form Alex tonight, and posted it on Myspace for those of you that'd like to check it out. It's a very personal song to me, as I wrote it for my Uncle who passed away a couple of years ago. I guess I shouldn't call this one "New", but it was re-recorded and sung by Alex, and he did a freaking amazing job on it!

I received a phone call from my Aunt a couple of weeks before my Uncle passed away, and he asked her to call me and see if they could play one of my songs for the funeral. I tell you, that was one of the hardest phone calls I've ever received. I really didn't have any songs that would be good for a funeral, so I told her I'd try to write one.

I asked her if there was anything that the two of them had shared that I could write about, and she said that he used to always buy her little angels. That was their one special thing. I jumped right on it and I wrote, and recorded the entire song (vocals included) in 3 1/2 hours! It was a record for me, and it seemed to come right to me. I think I had some help from up above on this one!

Anyway, I emailed them the song the next day and tried to call, but he was too weak to get on the phone. I heard back from my Aunt a few days later, and she put him on the phone... VERY tough phone call, but I was so touched because he really loved it! I think it really meant a lot to him, and I was just so glad that he got to hear it before he passed. That was the last time I spoke with him, and he died peacefully a couple of days later.

I really wrote this song from my Aunt's perspective to help her cope...She stayed by his side, and he was sick for a very long time.

Well, I'm sorry that I've probably depressed the HELL out of you poor people by now, but I just felt that some of you may want to know what the song's about. Thanks for listening, and I hope you like it!

Thank you, and I'm glad it moved you. I had to re-record the original vocals 3 or 4 times, because I kept choking up every time I'd get into the song! This song will always be special to me, and it's not going to be used for my album. It's a little too depressing and slow for a melodic rock album. Maybe I'll do a separate, more mellow album later and use it?

Once I get these songs "sellable", I'm going to sell them as downloads. I am going to probably lower the price on them to 89 cents. I definitely won't make hardly ANYTHING on them (myspace charges 50 cents off the top), but every little bit helps in recouping my losses from recording costs.

Are you kidding me?, I wasn't aware that myspace was charging that much per song...thats pretty steep!. Please do make that one available once you've tweeked it.

Thank you, and I'm glad you liked it. I think you'll like it better once it's completely finished. I may take that one into the studio when I do my other songs as well and have some real drums, bass and guitar added.

My dad is a vocalist and when his father passed away ten years ago, he asked me to record some guitar for him to sing Simon and Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" for the funeral. That was pretty tough for both of us to do - I'm sure that only gets ramped up when it's your own song. I'm a big fan of that vocal delay sound on these style songs too - Robert Lamm's always used that to great effect, especially on his solo efforts.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I think it's always a lot of pressure for any funeral. When I was in high school, one of my best friends passed away from cancer. I was at the church, and his mom asked me if I wanted to play the piano. I was one of the first people there, so I said sure! When I started playing, there was only 5 or 6 people there...I turned around when I finished, and there were probably 300! I was terrified, as that was the first time I'd played for more than 5 people.

It was harder on this song though, because I knew it was special to him and it had to be good. I'm very happy with how it turned out, and his service was beautiful.

Although it was tough for you, you're probably glad you and your Dad worked on that though!

The delay....I have mixed feelings about. While I like it, I'm worried that it's too much and others won't like it. I've asked him to dial it down just a little. I think it'll sound a little better.

Yeah, maybe dial it down throughout the song. The extended trails work in parts though. Maybe a more transparent sound for most of the vocal and leave that extended trail on a couple of phrases? I love the vocal delay on "Jesse" or "Murder On Me" by Robert Lamm (esp. the latter).

When my Dad died, I wanted so much to be able to express my love for him in a poem, something to celebrate his life and who he was, but the loss was too great. Even now, after five, nearly six years, I still can't say the words aloud without crying, it hurts too much.

You're very welcome. I'm sorry to hear about you're dad. I've always been a huge fan of the song "Living Years" by Mike and The Mechanics, and the first time I heard that, it just gave me chills. That song can apply to a lot of relationships.

I lost all 3 of my best friends during high school, and had a hard time deealing with it, but it helped me realize that you have to always make sure you let people know how you feel about them. That way, you'll never wonder "did they really know that I cared about them?". That's just a philosophy of mine, and I stick to it!
