Melodic Rock Questionnaire 2008

Postby youkeepmewaiting » Tue Dec 16, 2008 10:52 pm

I did one of these last year, so lets keep it going.

Most Dissapointing Music Moment of 2008?

For me it was Jamison cancelling the October performances in the UK.

Most Exciting News of 2008?

Well the usuall "Perrys recording" thing I guess but apart from that a new Bon Jovi with some actual rock in it next year... well thats what they say, they havnt really rocked for nearly 20 years. Oh and Creed reformation.

Favourite Album of 2008?

Well Journey's Revelation was one of the ones at the top of my list and probably would get it however I'm going to give it to GnR. I think I had such low expectations of of the album that I was completly blown away when I heard it. There is some phenominal songs on that album, and not particually a bad one either I dont think. Even if it was recorded 11 years ago Axls voice sounds fantastic.

1. GnR

Dissapointing album of 2008?

Kinda the opposite reason for this one. I had really, really high expectations for the Jimi Jamison album. I love Peteric and I know that many people love this album, which got me very excited to buy it. But personally the album hasnt gripped me at all. The isnt a bad song on it.. but I dont think any of the songs are that great either. I was expecting a Pride of Lions quality album but for me it just wasnt. But on the plus side, Jamison sounded great and its wonderful to see him back.

Favourite Song of 2008?

A few,

1. Turn down the world tonight - Journey
2. Street of Dreams - GnR
3. I've forgotten the name but that great ballad at the end of Chinease Democracy - GnR
4. Run - convered by Leona Lewis

Best Break Through Act of 2008?

This isnt a break through act... but it is a break through act for me. The Dixie Chicks. I'd heard of them but never heard anything by them. I was in a record store and I heard a great song come on, i asked who it was... yada yada yada... and then i bought the album (taking the long way) straight away, I love it. So then I bought the album Fly wich is also wonderful. I'm becomming a big fan of theres now.

Best Concert YOU went to in 2008?

Only went to a few but,

1. Journey were great, Arnel lit up the stage / Magnum who are just one of the best bands ever (for the 3 people who know of them on this board )

Saddest Musical Moment of 2008?

Nothing in particualer for me.

BAND OF THE YEAR?

I've mentioned them alot but I dont care, it's Journey. They pulled off a great tour with a very good album, and did very well in the charts ("but only cos of the re-records blah blah winge bitch cry piss and moan" )

So... what are your answers?

Most Dissapointing Music Moment of 2008?

Hmm... I gotta say pass on this one, this was a good year for my music.

Most Exciting News of 2008?

Steve Lukather embarking on a solo tour to small bars

Favourite Album of 2008?

Where to start? There were some incredible releases this year by some of my favorites. But, I gotta give the nod to Burton Cummings. 19 killer songs after an 18 year layoff and post-60 is impressive enough. Bundle that with a great making of the album documentary, and he's head and shoulders above the pack. But, some other great efforts came from Steve Lukather, Journey, Bill Champlin, Chicago (technically Stone of Sisyphus), Todd Rundgren, and Rick Springfield

Dissapointing album of 2008?

Hm... I haven't heard a bad album this year. But I suspect it would be Chinese Democracy, absolute shit from what I've heard. I'm not about to find out unless someone puts the CD in my hands free of charge

Favourite Song of 2008?

A few for me as well, as can be expected..

Burton Cummings - Invisible
Rick Springfield - I'll Miss That Someday
Todd Rundgren - Mad
Steve Lukather - The Letting Go
Journey - Never Walk Away
Bill Champlin - No Place Left to Fall
Chicago - Bigger Than Elvis

Best Break Through Act of 2008?

Hopefully one of the talented people we have on here. The mainstream is complete shit as always.

But, if I had to pick an established act, I'd go with Three. Saw these guys at Prog Nation 08 opening for Dream Theater and they were very good and very unique. I think it's only a matter of time before people start taking notice.

Best Concert YOU went to in 2008?

Missed Journey this year :(, but saw some great shows, in no particular order:

1. Randy Bachman/Burton Cummings w/ The Carpet Frogs at DTE (Detroit)
2. Steve Lukather at the Winchester Tavern (Lakewood, OH)
3. Frontiers at Altar Bar (Pittsburgh)
4. Todd Rundgren at House of Blues Cleveland + Eating dinner at one of the best restaurants in Cleveland and drinking booze on Todd's tour dime until 3 in the morning on a Sunday... what an experience! Work 3.5 hours later sucked...
5. Gin Blossoms
6. Dream Theater/Progressive Nation '08 (Cleveland)

Saddest Musical Moment of 2008?

Dan Fogelberg's death hit me pretty hard. I always thought I'd be able to see him, he was young, and I never realized how sick he was til he left us :(

BAND OF THE YEAR?

Burton Cummings & The Carpet Frogs - They produced a stellar album with GREAT musicianship all around. Honorable mention to Steve Lukather's touring band and Journey.

Most Disappointing Moment of '08?

I'm going to have to go with not being able to attend an MR meetup...

Most Exciting news of '08?

Deano back on the board, with his 'bag of dicks'...

Favorite Albums of '08?

Man, there were so few to pick through. Ramos/Hugo was a highpoint, as well some of Revelations. I'm not all pinoyed out, and giddy over it like some people are.....Oh, and my favorite, by far is the EP by Crunch(formally Adriangale); the few songs on it really showcased their talent, and Jamie Rowe has still got it, and I can't believe it fell through the MR cracks, Andrew!? Unless I totally missed the front page that day....

Disappointing Albums of '08?

Ok, I'm going to say it. Somebody has to....REVELATIONS. With the exception of Like a Sunshower, I couldn't care less about this release. As some of you know, I'm one of the biggest Harem Scarem fans here. But I gotta tell ya that for a band's final(?) effort, this one really stunk up the joint. I don't think there is a song on it I would even listen to a second time. Others that were less than stellar: Def Leppard, Work of Art, H.E.A.T., Overland, Marcello-Vestry, Pleasuredome, Starbreaker(most sad because the first one was CLASSIC!), and I gotta say it, even though I'm a huge Vaughn fan - From the Inside really has nothing to brag about. Again, the debut was CLASSIC! This one, notsomuch.

Favorite songs from '08?

Like a Sunshower - Journey, Crunch - Starting Over(MY song of the Year), Crunch - Miss Me, JOON - Life of an Ordinary Guy, Brother Firetribe - Runaways/Wildest Dreams,

Breakthrough Act of '08?

I'm going to have to say JOON. I've liked what I've heard so far. The first song more than the second. Like Ehwmatt said, the mainstream is such crap, as always...

Best concert attended in '08?

I have not attended one this year....

Band of the Year?

Journey will win this, of course...
My vote goes for Ramos/Hugo...that album puts Revelation to shame.

Dissapointing Music Moment of 2008?

I have to agree with YKMW, - the Jamison cancellation. Would have like to see that.
No tour with a Plant led Led Zepph

Most Exciting News of 2008?

Augeris comeback at Firefest and the new Tall Stories CD
Danger Dangers album next year
The fact that Arnel "worked out" for Journey
finding out i was going to be able to meet some of you all at Firefest this year - very nice experience!!

Favourite Album of 2008?

Tough one - I just orderd albums by Poley/Rivera, Jimi Jamison, Honeymoon Suite, Rick Springfield, Bill Champlin so my listening is incomplete - top list might change in a few days but right now it will be one of these :

From the Inside - visions
Alice Cooper- Along Came a spider
Journey - Revelation
Steve Lukather - ever changing times
Valentine- Soul Salvation
good to be bad Whitesnake

Dissapointing album of 2008?

Motley Crue Saints of Los Angeles - I couldnt dig it no matter how hard I tried

Favourite Song of 2008?

I really like the following six

Making Waves from the From the Inside- Visions CD - I cant stop spinning that one.
A Lifes Alibi- Tempestt
Ever changing times - Steve Lukather
Never Walk Away - Journey
Killed by Love - Alice Cooper
Gin and Tonic Sky - JSS

Best Break Through Act of 2008?

The Answer- I saw them a year or two ago infront of 40 people at Temple bar in dublin and now they are opening for AC/DC.
Lauren Harris - really impressed by this girl

Best Concert YOU went to in 2008?

Tykettos Performance at Firefest - this beats everything hands down- but the following were good as well:

Alice Coopers Performance at the British Motor show.
Journey in Hammersmith
Danger Danger at Firefest
JSS at firefest

Saddest Musical Moment of 2008?

dunno , it was a good year musically. suppose I was sad when the last set was over at Firefest - and I had to go home!
BAND OF THE YEAR?

Either The Answer, Whitesnake , or Journey... Think I ll go for Journey

I guess that I am just too old to accept any music as something big. The 50's were the 50's the 60's Beatles changed it completely with their writing, new beats, and musicianship and WOW Elton c 1970 seemed to change music to writing and real musicians playing live with better instruments. In the late late 70's , and Rolling Stones the business soared with a very young Aerosmith and Led Zep. Finally, bands in the 80's took it to stadium tours. That would be the Perry Journey for sure!!!!!!

good choices there, S1, agree with you entirely, but then again we are getting older and remember alot of the music from the 50's which was great and then the 60's, of course...the best era was the Journey/Perry one...what magic!
It's all still Rock and Roll to me. :D

Bought it on I-Tunes just this week. Can't say it's really grabbing me just yet but I'll give it a few more chances, I am a fan of them.

Favorite Album of 2008 for me was: Revelation

Most exciting news of 2008 for me was: Seeing how well Arnel did in Journey and how much the audiences loved watching and listening to him perform during the tour. I guess this is because I knew him personally. If it happened to someone I never knew, it perhaps wouldn't have mattered much to me then.

Most favorite songs of 2008 for me was: After All These Years.

Best concert I went to in 2008: Well I didn't go to any concerts in 2008, but I did go to see "The Phantom Of The Opera" last night up in San Francisco, so would that count? I did like it.

Saddest Musical Moments to me in 2008: Was when Ayumi Hamasaki announced she has recently become deaf in her left ear and may retire from her singing career.

Me too, if they play anywhere out by you, go see them. They still kick major butt....... Johnny D and Derri (who blew everybody away with his guitar solo) look like they've barely aged in the last 20 years.

This one's from last year, but still........ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usWTxlhd ... re=related

Most Dissapointing Music Moment of 2008?

No Zeppelin tour.

Most Exciting News of 2008?

New AC/DC album was actually dropping.

Favourite Album of 2008?

Brother Firetribe - Heart Full Of Fire

Royal Hunt - Collision Course was very good, too.

Dissapointing album of 2008?

Dokken - Lightning Strikes Again. Sorry Rip, but I just wasn't impressed.

Favourite Song of 2008?

Brother Firetribe - Wildest Dreams
Gotta Be Somebody - Nickelback
Never Walk Away - Journey
After All These Years - Journey

Best Break Through Act of 2008?

I don't really have an answer for this one.

Best Concert YOU went to in 2008?

I only attended two concerts this year, Rush and Journey. Rush was terrific.

Saddest Musical Moment of 2008?

The death of Bo Diddley

BAND OF THE YEAR?

I'm going with Brother Firetribe

Most Dissapointing Music Moment of 2008?
The Eagles new album. Boring as can be. Nothing really interesting whatsoever.

Most Exciting News of 2008?

Arnel joining Journey. Without a doubt.

Favourite Album of 2008?

Revelation and The Major Labels and Rick Springfield's latest one.

Dissapointing album of 2008?

The latest Hugo album. Just seemed incredibly dull, so I didn't buy this one.

Favourite Song of 2008?

1. 3 Warning Shots- Rick Springfield
2. Change for the Better - Journey
3. Velveteen Queen- The Major Labels
4. Aquavia- The Major Labels
5. Wildest Dream

Best Break Through Act of 2008?

The Major Labels. This is a guy from Boston named Bleu and a couple of other guys. Great power pop very reminiscent of early Wings. I just happened to stumble on them listening to popbangradio.com and bought the album because it was so good.

Best Concert YOU went to in 2008?

Gotta be the Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick show. Front row Journey tickets from St. John and got to watch Arnel just kick Seattle's ass. The guy was SO good and it was so awesome to hear Journey live the way they should sound. It wasn't Perry, but it was as close as it was going to get and I'm thankful for that and Pineda. The guy was amazing live.

Saddest Musical Moment of 2008?

That Kanye West thinks he's the voice of a generation. Dick.

BAND OF THE YEAR?

Hmm, not sure. I paid most attention to Journey, so I guess it'd be them.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
