OT - Starship - It's Not Enough (live 1989) performance

Postby J-Rod » Tue Dec 23, 2008 10:08 am

Hey folks,

I know that there are some fans of Starship and Mickey Thomas on the board. I was snooping through youtube and came across this rare live performace in promotion of the album Love Among The Cannibals. I really wish they could have toured behind that album as it is my favorite. Here is the video...later

Is this the Arsenio Hall show?

Thomas would've been a good replacement for Perry.

Starship? Jesus, who's next Mister Mister? How about some A-ha? If we're lucky can somebody throw up some some Jack Wagner? Dying to see a live cut of All I Need! Starship is garbage and Mickey Thomas makes Richard Simmons sucking a large cock while in a dress and high heels look manly.

I'm not a fan of Starship but Mickey Thomas is a hell of a lot better singer than Springsteen. I love several Springsteen tunes but the guy sounds like he's sitting on the stool with a bad case of constipation.

Whatever dude. It's not all about singing you know. There is no one comparable to Bruce, no one. Don't even tell me there is because there isn't. Even Perry in his prime wasn't as good as Bruce.

Mickey Thomas? Fuck, I wish I was him! How many folks stop dead in their tracks and say, "Hey! Mickey! Dude, "We Built this City" rocks!" Naw, I would think most who see Bruce on the street just give him the head bob and say, "you're from Jersey, right?"

Bruce rules. The fans and numbers bear me out.

It's funny that Mickey Thomas came up for discussion again...I was just browsing some of my old posts the other day and even back in 2007 I had to defend Mickey against your Richard Simmons comparisons.

Mickey Thomas has an amazing voice and great talent; I play Starship songs over and over again just to hear his unique voice. I would prefer to see Mickey over Bruce performing any day, but hey - that's just my preference. My favorite vocalists are people like Steve Perry, Mickey Thomas, C.J. Snare, Jimi Jamison, or Bobby Kimball to name a few..I enjoy singers who have a wide vocal range and a pleasing tone. Everyone has their preferences.

I really don't care for singers like Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Bob Seger, etc...I just don't like their singing style. If you want to criticize Mickey Thomas' singing ability, that's fine, but let's leave Richard Simmons out of it.

Lastly - why would you declare Springsteen better than Perry in a JOURNEY thread?

You're preaching to the choir here, pal. I already know Springsteen kicks the crap out of Starship. That being said, Mickey Thomas' vocals are far superior to Bruce. It's not even close. The only thing I'm comparing here is vocal ability. Thomas has it in spades. Springsteen should bury his WITH a spade.

As far as numbers go, give me a break. I've never judged an artist's work by how well it sells or how many fans they have. That's teenage, high school crap. If you're going to judge it simply on that then The Stones, Beatles, Who, Zeppelin, and others are better than Springsteen. That kind of measuring stick is the dumbest way to determine the worth of an artist.

Dude, I know Thomas can sing, I am having some fun here, but damn his songs are cheesier than a Cain solo effort. And, so you know, and you do, it's not all about singing. Bruce is the best frontman in music today, and he sings just fine thank you.

Appeal and ability as a frontman don't always equal appeal and ability of a singer. Robin Zander can attest to that!

Many a brilliant frontman could be out sung in an actual singing contest. But I'll take the great frontman anyday. Bruce is indeed one of the best ever.

But the sweet soul of Mickey Thomas' vocals are something special too. Love that guys voice.

I hear you Dave, but the list of artists you just named? Bruce can easily be among them and is definitely in that league of greatness.

Album sales does not equate talent. Puh-lease, Paris Hilton sold lots of albums......don't even go there.

Mickey rules.
I do agree that during the mid 80's, the Starship's sound morphed into a very synth heavy, cheesy style (like MANY artists during this time). However that does NOT take away from his catalog both before and after that period.

Come on, it's easy to discern who the shit acts are. Even Matthew the Fag can cross Paris and Britney off the list. But to sell in the area of 100 million in the US, like Bruce has, means something, and compare that to the 2 million Starshit has sold..there is a clear difference.

Precisely. While everything that "sells" certainly isn't good, it's almost automatic that if you record a shitty/mediocre album you won't see album sales. Destroy All Monsters by Eric Martin is a great example of a shitty album.

You have got to be shitting me!? Was that the soundtrack to the movie of the same name? I saw that shit film 26 yrs ago. It was on Sci-Fi channel all week long. Godzilla and his son, rounded up Rodan, Gamara the flying turtle, and some other tricerotop looking motherfucker and went to war against Ghidra, the three headed monster, in an epic battle in the south Pacific on Monster Island! I remember Ghidra's heads had an argument during the fight, and the right head started biting the centre head and he fucked himself up! I thought he could have done some damage until in fighting doomed his sorry ass. If he would have shut down the rebellious right head, he might have, mind you I said might have, won the fight.

Dude, you never watched monster movies? Godzilla's playhouse? Oh man, great movies, but they were all done in Japanese. You had the star of the show say, "look, it's Godzilla!"- but what actually came out of his mouth was, "Where is my Kawazaki?" All the mouth mis ups were funny. The model trains that Godzilla would walk on and destroy as well as the little fires that the ever present oil refinery would blowup and create. Hilarious shit.

 I'm impressed you've even heard of that one, you've been doing some research. :)

But I agree, not one of his better ones..........Somewhere in the Middle and I'm Going Sane were much better.

And Dean, Mr. Big wasn't lacking in fans or sales, especially in Japan. EM's new cd (Japan only release) Mr. Vocalist is selling so well, they now want a Mr. Vocalist 2. :) Say what you want about Mr. Big, but there is no denying they are 4 talented dudes.

Bruce Springsteen is the boss, however Mikey Thomas is a professional singer and simply understands how to use his range to his full potential. Both are simply legends of rock.

Who are all those back-up musicians behind MT? Being an old S.F. gal, I'm partial to the original Jefferson Airplane/Starship crew -- Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Marty Balin. What year did Mickey join the band?

 That's a new one. Can't find it in my trusty Aussie slang dictionary?

http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

Our new boss sent us this link in an email, with this paragraph to decipher.......he's such a hoot. LOL, calls me Debster, but actually comes out more like Debstah.

So in future, when I say….."I took my ankle biter to a game of aerial ping pong at the WACA with a drongo banana bender from Brissie. I was gobsmacked that the team I was barracking for played like a bunch of sheila bludgers, so we shot through at half time and went to the boozer for some grog."…..then you will know exactly what I mean!
