Registry Defender question

When I logged on to the internet a few minutes ago something popped up on my screen asking me to download something called "Registry Defender." It's nothing that I had ever installed in the past, in fact I had never even heard of it before.

Does anyone know if it's legitimate, or if it's a virus?

Even as I'm typing this there are strange things going on with my browser.

GB,i had an aweful time, i had to trash my whole screen with that clunker, then it got small than frigas penis, i think its the right size now. Im trying to get the tag number so i can find that bobller

It's prolly pretty much the same as the Spyware Guard 2009 that I ended up crashing my computer to get rid of it

It's definitely some form of a virus. It's called Virtumonde, and it's a total pain in the ass. Anyone know how I can remove it?

Definitely a malware ploy. Simple rule I tell people to follow -- if it approaches you in a sudden pop-up warning, ignore it. Legit products don't advertise themselves by reporting existing problems with your system.

Virtumonde is definitely a total pain in the ass. Self-defending rootkit, usually, and has to be removed manually with a boot disc. You might be able to search around and find a free removal tool for this one specifically.

It's bombarding me with pop-ups every few seconds. I suspected that that was a trojan when I got that "Registry Defender" pop-up, so I did NOT install it. But it's still f-ing up things big time on my computer.

In all seriousness too, not trying to be annoying. Haven't had to put up with one thing like that for the 3.5 years I've had my Mac. PCs just aren't worth it any more unless you're doing serious gaming.

I dunno if they're not worth it... I have never gotten a hard-to-fix virus/malware on any of my personal computers (knocking on wood), and have only been phished once, on MySpace. I don't think it's that hard to avoid such things, my problems with Windows are only with Windows features, lol.

Macs can be good for those who are prone to catching these kinds of problems though, I suppose.

Linux anyone? hahaha

If it were me, I'd go to www.avast.com and get the free home version of Avast Antivirus. Dump the antivirus you have and install Avast. The reason I tout Avast is because it does a virus scan during the system boot after it's installed, if you opt for it to. That allows it to clean files that cannot be cleaned once Windows has booted up. If you choose to do this, make sure you uninstall the antivirus program you have before installing Avast. Otherwise you could end up with more problems than you have now. During install, select the "Minimal" option. That prevents it from installing the stupid 'skins' which are confusing. After it's installed, it will ask if you want to do a boot-time scan. Answer yes to that. Then it will ask if you want to restart the computer. Select No to that. Open Avast via the desktop shortcut, click on Program, go to Updates and select to update iAVS. That will give you the latest virus definitions on the boot-time scan. Then proceed with rebooting the computer. During the scan, when it locates something it will ask you how to proceed. Press 6, which tells it to Move Everything to the Chest. If it finds an infected file in the C:\Windows folder, it will again ask how to proceed. Press 2 to "Fix All". If you elect to keep Avast, you can disable the stupid rotating icon in the programs settings. You can also disable the sounds there as well.

Go to www.download.com Search for and download Spybot Search and Destroy. Install it, let it update and then do a system scan. Have it fix everything it finds.

Go to this website and download Hijackthis. Install it, do a system scan and PM the results of the scan to me. I'll scrutinize it and get back with you on how to proceed from there.

As far as Windows PCs go, I can also do without the constant slowdowns as the system ages/hard drive fills up, constant need to reformat to keep things running at optimal speed, and the occasional program instability. As far as virus/malware goes, all it takes is one idiot/one family member/one friend to hop on the computer for 5 minutes to fuck things up. Plus, easy to deal with or not, I'd rather not deal with them at ALL Plus, OS X just beats any current incarnation of windows hands-down for me.

The only thing I really miss about Windows is PowerTab, a guitar/music scoring program. The Mac converters are very lacking so far.

It would redirect to somesite that wanted to sell me spyware removel shit.I finally crashed it bought a fix it utilities cd at office depot and it keeps all the shit off the computor

That's usually what I do, back-up all the important stuff and reformat. It seems easier to do that then try to figure out what's wrong.

Yeah, that one's a pretty big pain in the arse, took my girlfriend and I 2 days to get rid of it... but now it's gone and no problems.
