I think I'd actually rather watch 3 hours of football (which I dislike) than all the Perry-oke. Sorry. But we all know what song is gonna be televised (if this is true, that is). And then its gonna be 10 minutes of stupid commentators saying crap like "wow he sounds just like Steve Perry...." and "I feel like its 1981 again!" Pass.

Except there will probably be one sports analyst, probably an ex- player who will say there is only one Steve Perry, and the message boards will light up calling the guy a hater and racist and bigot and so forth.
that will be cool

I forgot to add that people will say that Steve Perry paid the guy to say his name, just like he has his agents write negative comments on all the Arnel/Journey videos because he is so jealous.

I think that about says it all.

Tom Petty bills himself as an old-fashioned rock 'n' roller who takes a stand against all the jive and corny aspects of show biz.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers bring pristine showmanship - a little too pristine, perhaps - to the halftime show at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz. But Sunday, he backed down in his Super Bowl halftime show. It seems the rocker was lip-syncing.The 57-year-old singer wouldn't be the first – or the last – musician to lip-sync at the Super Bowl. Playing a noisy football stadium on live TV is such an acoustical nightmare that most acts decide to tape their 12-minute set the week before and "sing" into a dead microphone during the show. The only thing live is the between-song "Thank you!"

Janet Jackson was obviously lip-syncing in 2004, and Paul McCartney appeared to be doing the same in 2005. But Prince and the Rolling Stones reversed the trend at the last two Super Bowls, with live sets that were raw but still spectacular.
Mr. Petty and the Heartbreakers lacked that element of danger in their by-the-book rendition of "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin' " and "Runnin' Down a Dream."

All the tell-tale signs of lip-syncing were there: The vocals sounded too pristine, Mr. Petty's lungs didn't seem to be expanding far enough, and every time he sang, his mouth was strategically hidden behind a big spongy microphone.

Perhaps the real giveaway came during his "ad-libbed" aside in "Free Fallin' ": He backed away from the mike a split-second before his voice trailed off.

Super Bowl shows suck most of the time anyway. Not sure if TP lipped or not, I barely watched it. I love Petty's music, but he just doesn't do it for me live. I've got two concert DVDs and I saw him once live. All underwhelming, very "by the book" like that review says, and honestly, the entire band's sound just isn't big enough for my live preferences. I even have an old performance of "American Girl" from Midnight Special in the late 70s that is just so goddamn boring. One of the very FEW artists I enjoy much more in the studio than on the stage.

I already know Springsteen's set, and he is definitely playing a new number, because that's what artists do to promote themselves and their new product, and that's how artists...stay relevant.

It'd be great if they actually plugged more of the new material (IMO all of it's great), but the fact that their hits are popping up in movies (albeit the credits... ) and the general public has their moment of nostalgia says something for the potential reaction of the crowd just to hear the opening riff of DSB. I'm curious as to how you see Springsteen staying relevant...I heard on a classic rock station about him putting out another new album, but otherwise I haven't heard or seen anything as an attention grabber to say he's still "relevant." BTW, glad to see you back on the forum and to know that the hospital didn't cut out your sharp tongue

Hey, good work. I believe you and the article. Fuck Tom Petty. If I gave two shits about him, I would indeed "go to work" on this scandal, but it is hopefully a one time deal, not a tour or two long jive assed con job. Tell you what, if Bruce even considers this, let alone does it, I will never speak his name, never respect him again and never wear his gear ever again. Just told Lula about Greasy hair lipping and she said, "really?" I said yep, and then told her Bruce better not do this, and she said they might not have a choice...I said, some artists are big enough and have enough swagger and pride, to "do it their way or no way."

Thanks for the shout out, and regarding Journey, many folks who no longer drool over them, me included, due to whatever the reason; lipping, stabbing members in the back, etc etc...they could win me back if they went out there, and showcased themselves as a viable act, a band that is not living on hits 27-30 years old. I don't want to hear about music climate changes and MTV etc. Other 80 acts have changed, to stay relevant, ie, Madonna, Bon Jovi, and other acts have shown some backbone and balls by releasing and playing new material, ie, Bruce, and U2. It takes nerve to play to an audience new songs. Those bands have done it, while Journey goes through the motions on the fuckin dirty dozen. Everyone knows they are mega talented, but that isn't good enough, not for me at least. How many times can Neal play DSB or SIL flawlessly? How many times can a fan see the same shit over and over? Hell, in 2006, the band was spreading it's creative wings thanks solely to Jeff's presence, and while Neal was enjoying playing deep cuts and lost in the years songs, Ross for one couldn't even remember the chords for Winds of March or other Infinity tunes. Those guys can play their setlist in their sleep. No change ups, no different arrangements, no creativity=boring band. Seriously, I see some here who do oogle over this band, does so now with increased skepticism, and want the new stuff. Fans want to be proud, but they don't want to walk around in a T shirt with a band whose relevancy hark ens back to the Reagan days.

Hard to say. Born to Run has 8 songs and all 8 are perfect. Best album ever perhaps. Nebraska, dark and lonely, only a guitar and microphone used. The River- Double album, awesome. Tunnel of Love- up to date pop/rock. Darkness on the Edge of Town- awesome. The Rising- Masterpiece, written entirely on 9/11. Magic- tremendous follow up to The Rising, political in nature. Best one of all? Live 1975-1985 three disc set. Tremendous. get this first and go from there.

DARKNESS and BORN TO RUN tied for the best, but they're all pretty great (except TOM JOAD- I feel like I'm doing homework every time I listen to that album.

"Darkness on the Edge of Town" is my favorite Springsteen album, followed closely by "Born in the U.S.A." (despite the title track being one of the most overplayed tunes in rock history).

I think I'd actually rather watch 3 hours of football (which I dislike) than all the Perry-oke. Sorry. But we all know what song is gonna be televised (if this is true, that is). And then its gonna be 10 minutes of stupid commentators saying crap like "wow he sounds just like Steve Perry...." and "I feel like its 1981 again!" Pass.

lets see... Eagles make the superbowl this year just like they did in 1981 .....Journey gets up there and performs songs of Escape just like 1981. Perry makes a shock start for team Journey and sounds better than he did in 1981 .

.... Donovan McNabb outperforms any Eagle QB in the game, much better than Jaworski in 81... Perry and McNabb get put on Wheaties boxes together.....

Actually, I thought this scenario was plausable until I got to the donovan mcnabb performing bit.... nah.... implausible... frorget I said anything.......

If the Eagles make it, and it's very possible as they are playing well right now, does Bruce play Philadelphia? Fuck I would hope not, but he plays a lot of deep cuts. Ok, just sayin, that song is a bit too dark and depressing.

Unlikely...well If the Cardinal make it , and they are up against the Chargers, I'll bet Bruce comes out with "57 channels (and nothings on)" The whole damn country will be sining along in unison, meaning every word from the bottom of their hearts !

He wouldn't play Philadelphia because an artist doesn't show bias during halftime...

I was joking smartass, and I hate to say it, and pray that he doesn't, but if anyone would get bias, or political, it would be Bruce. That's the only thing I wish sometimes he would temper a bit. Again, there is NO way he would play Philadelphia, although that song is extremely well crafted and very emotional.

He'll play a frickin' goofy medley that ends with 'Born in the USA' and we all know it. Bet me. 8)

NO WAY does he play Born in the USA.

Glory Days, Badlands, Thunder Road, Hungry Heart, The Rising (pick three of those), and close with Born to Run. He will start with a new one, My Lucky Day, or Workin on a Dream. He only gets 14 minutes. He may play American Land, the Irish folk/rock tune.

Deal. And that's a big thing to me, as Chet is a legend in his own right here on MR. Now, when BS doesn't play Born in the USA, what are you going to do? Show me your tits?
