A statue for Arnel Pineda?

I was born there and lived there for 23 years and i don't get it....but hey, more power to him and Noel. I guess i've always seen statue commemorating mostly dead people and other symbolism. But good for him, he now knows that his achievement in singing and now his charity work are being recognized. Lets not forget that his hard work started many many years ago.

I will try to explain. Although there are a lot of talented artists in the Philippines, alas they don't get any international exposure/recognition and they end up working abroad singing in bars or performing "cultural dances" in Japan. In almost everything, we have always been the whipping boys. A good example is sports in which we have never had an Olympic gold medal or in basketball (our un-official national sport) where our national team regularly get their ass kicked by teams they used to beat. I think this is the reason why we are desperate to have somebody that will inspire us. This is what Manny Pacquiao has done in sports and Arnel Pineda in music. Both will soon have statues erected in the Philippines to remind the Pinoys that there is hope if you persevere. ...I'm sure Wech can explain better

Thanks for the explanation, mdaemon. Very informative. This has been on Arnel's site for quite a while, and to me it was too much too soon also. I rolled my eyes at first. If he had been a Journey singer for three years, then I would have understood. But eventually I realized to the town he's an inspiration, and, plus, he had set up the foundation to help the street children and orphanages and the poor. So there is a huge sense of pride there that not only did he have the success he did internationally but that he wants to give back to the city and make a difference and is proud of his roots. After this Christmas with all he did for the poor hands on, I understood better.

I don't think the statue is based on Arnel's vocal ability. There are a lot of more successful artists in American than Steve Perry hence his accomplishment isn't that big a deal there. Arnel however is probably the biggest Pinoy artist who made it in America.

To put this in a proper perspective, because of the shit loads of Olympic medals the Americans have won, most of you probably don't even know the name of the captain of the US volleyball team who won gold in Beijing recently. The Pinoys however still remember and know the Pinoy dude who won an olympic silver medal in boxing 13 years ago.

I have to agree with Dan. Who cares if it's too soon or whatever? The guy does a lot with his foundation, he's a helluva singer, and his country loves him. You can see that with all the media coverage they've given him, etc.

Not sure why people want to turn it into something bad. Sounds like Arnel is one heck of an inspiration to those in his country and that's pretty cool to me and something that should be appreciated.
