Just hearing dave on Jimi's new album....tells me two things. First, Dave AND Jimi..both have the chops to pull off survivor...and second..both can willingly get along with Peterik...who to my knowledge never WAS the issue. Are you kidding? I won a contest years ago to see Survivor, back when Dave was singing, first concert I ever walked out of....they did nothing to impress me, nothing....

I worked for Jimi for year's and attended many concerts and to say that Robin's stage performance blows jj away, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee......Jimi always had the crowd eating out of his hands. He worked the crowd like a pro and continues to do so.

Why do JJ fans take anything positive about Robin so personally? I just don't get it. I prefer JJ on vocals but as far as actually performing Robin blows him away. Cheryl I do want to thank you though for all the stuff you have done as far as JJ and keeping us posted with pictures etc.

I have seen all 3 versions of Survivor live . All though Jim Peterik wasn't involved of any of the shows which saddens me to think he is the only musical hero of mine that I have never seen live .

Jimi was great in the times I saw him perform with Frankie Sullivan .. I dare say the entire bands stage presence was not incredible . The songs were performed too long and the audience wasn't really involved in singing along . I saw them with Night Ranger , Kansas & with Eddie Money and Loverboy . Jimi's voice was awesome.

Dave was good vocally but his style isn't to run around the stage like David Lee Roth and he doesn't have the wind capacity to do that . His trademark isn't that . When I am at a show I want the singer to sound like the cd I bought .

Robin is great too . He doesn't have the voice for the songs he sings. The songs are not on key like the ones Dave or Jimi sang . His voice is powerful but not for the style of pop , fun songs.


Jimi solo or with RPM Concerts is different . He talks to the audience and goes about the stage something he didn't do with Survivor . He plays more tunes and has more intensity in the performance . He smiles and has fun with it .

Frankie Sullivan in my opinion should be The Survivor not Survivor. He is lucky to be booked by a great agency and still gets on tv once in a while . I think he likes the harder sound from Premotion days than the Vital Signs pop . The music on some of the tunes from Reach was good too. He should make a cd singing and playing the guitar . I would buy it .

I have always thought Jim Peterik was the one with the flare and the passion . Pride Of Lions , Above The Storm and Jimi Jamison's Crossroads Moment cds prove it to me. And all this talk about Survivor and it's past is funny because since Peterik quit the band he has made more cds and written and played live probably 20 times more than he ever did with Survivor . If music was the same industry as it was back in 82-88 his work now would be just as big if not even bigger .

I'll agree Jamison might have lost his voice from 2002 -2006 but he is back now so whatever he did to build himself back is astounding . The Chrismas tune they did worried me about his vocals and then by Reach I was very worried he was finished .
It amazes me .. He sounds a lot like Vital Signs on more than a few of them cuts on Crossroads Moment.

Jimi sure could sing all the material once again .

I agree with you 100%. Initially, it was Jimi's voice that caught my ear...then recently I came across Ever Since The World Began and I was floored by Bickler's performance (hence I want to complete my collection by getting his albums with the band too). Personally, Robin's a great ROCK singer and has a good range, but he doesn't have the SOUL aspect that Bickler and Jamison have. To me, it's basically Frankie Sullivan's Survivor and I have no desire to see them no matter how close they come to my town. Pretty much why I voted in the poll (Which version of Survivor do you want to see..?) that I would want to see a version with all of them and somebody else on guitar...

If they do come near your town, why don't you give them a chance? Im sure your memories of the past Survivor would not diminish anyway.

Everyone has their own reasons why they like this or that;you have very interesting experience Pianoman of what Survivor is to you.

Meanwhile, yes, I also believe Frankie is more interested in the harder Survivor sound hence taking Robin. FS is one brave dude regardless. BTW, I think it has been "Frankie's Survivor" since '96. But I've no qualms on it because FS is the the main guitar sound for Survivor ever since they've come into the wider public eye.

I agree with you MarcelJ. Every fan should give Robin a chance. I did. I’m a newbie here, but have been browsing threads occasionally, and am an old fan of Survivor. It seems that most of you are like me, where your first Survivor is still your favorite Survivor. I’m a huge fan of Jim Peterik, first and foremost as he was the one with the most energy, and so fun to watch back in the old days. He was the one leaving treadmarks on the stage, one of the nicest guys from the start, always appreciative of his fans, and still nice to this day. Being a 70’s girl, I also love Jim’s voice, and all of the work that he’s done past and present… but that’s another topic.

Dave was my favorite powerful voice behind the first Survivor song I ever heard on my college radio station, which played Somewhere in America. I instantly knew the song, and when I found out they were local, I had to see them live as I was swept away by the new sound. Can you believe I was into disco just before that? What a refreshing change! Dave was my first Survivor and will always be my sentimental favorite. I love Dave’s slightly raspy and crisp voice. He was perfect for that early triple guitar harder rock sound that I still love. I saw him at least 20 times at bars and smaller venues, usually standing up front, and he was always spot on vocally… just like the vinyl… minus the popping. Dave was a great singer and very sweet guy, but for stage performance, he pretty much took his position on stage and stayed there. Dave put all of his energy into his amazing vocals. It was very surprising and sad to see Dave go.

I only saw Jimi with “Survivor 2” in concert twice at large arenas, and was so high up there in the balcony that it wasn’t quite as intimate and memorable as the small venues with Dave. From what I recall of the 2 stadium shows, and watching the Japan 85 video, he made good use of the stage. Also saw him fairly close at the filming of the I Can’t Hold Back video, where I first learned of Dave’s demise, but it was all very controlled, so hard to judge him from that experience. Jimi was a great choice after the loss of Dave, and I thought he had a slightly less edgy and more pure tone. For the new Crossroads, I don’t know what he did, but he sounds a bit more raspy like Dave used to sound. Very nice! I’ve listened to the new Jimi many times over (great way to pass the time while shoveling endless snow!) I know and love each song on Crosswords. The new Dave has a deeper and raspier voice now than he did before, but that’s just based on the one line in When Rock was King, and Real Man of Genius Bud commercials. If it weren’t for the new WRWK video, I wouldn’t have known the voice on that line was Dave. Dave was the rocker, but I’m most fond of Jimi for his ballads. Either one works for me! I wish that I would have been able to see Jimi from the front row like Dave, but will get a chance to see him at the World Stage show at College of Dupage next weekend. Hope he does a Crossroads song!

In Summer 08, when friends invited me to see the all new “Survivor 3”, I was excited to see them, but wasn’t expecting to be as thrilled as I was. What Robin was missing in vocal tone to match Dave or Jimi, he thoroughly made up for in his fun performance. After seeing them on Dancing, I thought Robin seemed nice and he tried hard, but it just wasn’t the same Survivor. But at the first concert, he totally won me over. Somebody said that he lacked passion or sincerity, but I have to disagree. He immerses himself entirely, mind, body and spirit into each and every song. He works the whole audience, reaching out and pulling you in. Robin’s energy is really infectious, and some of his dance moves are hysterical. Frankie enjoyed himself too, smiling and moving around the stage more than the old days. Both concerts started out with smaller audiences, but attracted attention and had everyone standing by the end. I have to give Robin credit, as it must be hard to fill such big shoes, and sing songs that don’t “belong” to him. I was expecting to be disappointed, but the songs are still great, no matter who fronts the band. It was so exciting to see “Survivor” live again after 24 years of missing out.

I’ll always miss Dave, but he seems happy with his new life as a teacher and Bud Light man with stray appearance on World Stage. Great to see that both Dave and Jimi still hanging with Jim! One can only hope that Dave will give it another go like his new friend Jimi. You never know. One thing’s for sure, Peterik is a song writing machine that’s like the energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going. I’m with anyone who thinks that many of tracks from Crossroads are some of the best “Survivor” they’ve heard since THTS. Jimi puts his heart into each of the songs. I think Lost or Bittersweet could be an easy Adult Contemporary Chart hit for him if ever released in the states. At least ballads are still timeless today! Wish that everything old could really be new again, and that the Crossroads rock songs could be a hit on today’s radio.

I would love to have my old Survivor back, but I’d say that chance is slim to none. However, I’d rather have any piece of Survivor sewn together from the shreds than no Survivor at all. After all, Jimi’s Crossroads, plus Jim’s upcoming Ides release Keep Rockin’, plus whatever Frankie and Robin are brewing makes 3 Survivor-like albums in one year… providing Frankie ever gets out of first gear. That’s a feat that even the original Survivor couldn’t match! BTW, thanks for reading, and sorry for the long introductory reply!

Yeah, Robin far exceeded my expectations, and my friends thought they were so great that they wanted to see them again too. By that time, they only had one more concert, so we'll see what the coming summer concert season brings! Only can wonder what the mix with Robin's songwriting will do to the sound of Survivor. Whatever happens, I'll be a loyal fan till the end... hopefully a long time from now!

I didn't really discuss Frankie as far as vocalists go, but he certainly still has the magical Fender touch. They have one local concert date posted so far this coming summer, so I'll be there, supporting them whenever I can, just like the old days.

I like Journey too, but only saw them once in 1978 when they were hot at a large arena. Wish Survivor would join that bandwagon as an opener for Journey, especially as Arnel did such a great version of Ever Since the World Began with the Zoo. He could duet beautifully with Jimi, I'm sure. Survivor and Journey would be a phenomenal concert pair!

I had the same dream! I think both Jimi and Dave are mellow enough to pull that off, backing each other's vocals. Wouldn't that be amazing?! Maybe if we all dream really hard, it will come true... or maybe not. LOL

I'll be supporting the current Survivor on June 27 at Bloomingdale IL... and hopefully some future dates not yet posted. One can only hope that they'll take it to the streets of America even more this year!

That's really telling that in the end these guys are professionals doing what they love to do, the main thing is go out there to the best of their abilities, to give others some enjoyment. Wow, 1978 with Journey. With all due respect with Journey's music from '81 onwards, I think they were really a rock band in the true sense pre-jonathan cain. I love all the albums even the first ones actually more than the mid 80's onwards with the exception of Separate Ways (which is the ultimate ballad/rocker). I can only imagine what it was like for you.

You are more than welcome for the pictures, believe me, I love taking photo's of any concert, it's a hobby.

Now, if as someone said, it's not Jimi interacting with the crowd, then I would be interested in understanding how he could outdo the original singer....as much as I thought Steve Augeri was one of the nicest rockers in the world, there just is no comparison to Perry.

And believe me, I don't take it personally. I was emailed the night Robin got the gig from another rocker/friend and told about it before it went public and was told by this person that he would do the songs justice and had a great voice...I don't doubt that, so I guess next time they come around I gotta go see for myself...just like the new Journey cd, and kevin...hush..lol...but was talked into getting it, told I would like it, I can barely understand what the man is singing...

the songs are good, but it sounds like Perry doing warm ups as his dictation and perhaps that english isn't his first language, that has something to do with it, that's not a slam against the guy, it's just how I hear it.

I haven't a clue as to what he's singing on songs coz I can't understand his words......tho the music is excellent Kevin...lol. I think they are some of the best musicians out there but I just can't get into the new songs without understanding the lyrics, coz to me, the lyrics are what makes a song mean something to me....just my humble opinion...lol.

Thanks for the Journey fact check! Should have verified before posting. A friend and I reminisced on the Journey concert, and we thought it was one of our earliest arena concerts, but it was actually waaaaaay later. It was after Cain joined, and after Faithfully, so it was the Frontiers tour in June 82 with Bryan Adams opening act. It was an amazing concert, but not nearly as long ago as we thought. When you get my age, dates start to blur.

We all would prefer to see our favorite bands with as many original (or long-time) members intact as possible, and with Survivor it's just not happening to a big extent right now. It would be great to see a Survivor reunion at some point, maybe a tour with the whole gang and a 2 hour set with 1 hour of Dave and 1 hour with Jimi. Now I'm dreaming!

Anyway, I will still be supporting the current version of Survivor (seeing them on July 11 '09)

You got it! It will be my first time seeing this version (or any version) of Survivor. I need to keep thinking about summer concerts so I can get through the next three months of snow and cold!

They could call it the opposite too (which would be better), like Casualty or Casualties. Don't get me wrong, I wished they would make one more run with Peterik and Bickler and/or Jamison. But, since I doubt that will ever happen, I will settle for the current Survivor and Peterik's side bands.
