Could and more Importantly Should, Journey do this?

Postby Rockindeano » Sun Jan 11, 2009 4:09 pm

Hey children,
You all know I go nuts over Bruce and E Street, but I came across this and want to put it to you Journey fans.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/ ... ling_in_09

The new Rolling Stone has an article on "Working on A Dream" the new Bruce Inc. release.

This paragraph is pretty interesting:

Springsteen and the E Street Band will tour behind the new album, following their Super Bowl halftime set on February 1st. A source says the tour will not be "a total marathon," probably 50 to 60 shows divided between the U.S. and Europe. One idea under consideration is a miniset each night devoted to a full performance of one of Springsteen's classic albums — "a way of addressing the past," the source says.

Honestly, I know I poke fun at Journey, but this I think would be a great idea. Let's hear your ideas and complaints to this.

I would love to go see Journey play an entire album. I do wonder if they have the patience to practice and play an oldie though. Are they good enough?

I chose Revelations, because Arnel owns those songs, the classics are owned by Perry - not interested in the classics anymore, unless Steve Perry is at the helm!.

When Boston toured on the "Third Stage" tour, they did the album straight through.

I agree with Vladan, although I won't be there to see/hear it.

Revelation. Just to show they got balls. If no one shows up except filipinos, at least Arnel will know which way his solo career is headed in the good ole' U.S.A.

Right now, I'd like to catch 'em while Arnel is behind the mic -- that and see them while I still can since I never know when they'll actually call it quits, but that's beside the point.

It would be great to see them and not have the entire show be predictable.

How would they work that? Would you know ahead of time which CD was featured or would it be a surprise?

If they did something like this, they might have to consider limiting which CDs they picked from. The
pre-Perry Journey catalogue won't go over well and from what I've read on this forum, the consensus is
Arrival and Generations were not well received and Generations in particular was terrible. I can't remember
Deano's specific comments, but it was a definite thumbs down. The Boss doesn't have any CDs that suffer
from this problem, so he can pull from his entire catalogue.

I have favourites off of almost every CD, but like many I have never been to a Journey concert. This works more for
fans like you guys who go to several concerts every tour and have seen it all. But for those of us who may only be
able to go to one concert in a lifetime, to only hear one CD and not some favourites might be too great a disappointment.
And if I flew hundreds of miles and paid out a lot of money only to hear Generations or Trial By Fire, that would not be good.

The majority are casual fans who would not buy tickets if they thought they might only hear Trial By Fire,
but nothing off Escape or Frontiers, so already you are looking at smaller venues and lower ticket sales. Personally
though, I would prefer smaller, more intimate venues.

If I knew which CD it would be when I bought the ticket, then I like the idea - I would have to decide which songs
meant the most to me at that point in time. But I would rather they do what Bruce did for his last concert
and take audience requests - Journey would still be challenged to know their entire catalogue, it would still be a
surprise - for everyone, and the audience would leave happy.

I think Bruce has more hard core fanbase attending his concerts than Journey, at this point. I can see where it would work for him. Alot of the following Journey had with Perry have moved on after X number of replacement singers. Journey has a shitload of the DSB-casual-karaoke-dirty-dozen-or bust crowd coming to their shows. They would be bored stiff sitting through an entire set of just one album.
Bruce's fans would camp out for a week waiting to hear him do this. Journey? Nah.....their days of devoted fanbase crying for deep cuts is over. I can't see Arnel pulling it off on stuff he hasn't practiced to death with a diction coach, either.

Journey played all the past hits in 2005 when they toured by themselves and gave a 2 1/2 - 3 hour show each night.

Time to bring in new songs and release another new album.

Keep the Journey train moving forward...Journey has the momentum!

Well, I'm the 'conservative bitch' (I know, I know, that's a given...) who voted to "play it safe", but I have a question:

Can I have the dirty dozen and a mini-set of Infinity? :? Of course, all bets are off (for me) unless SP comes back to sing it!

Once they get another album under their belt w/Arnel... I think at least half the set should be focused on those songs...provided of course, the next CD does at least as well, if not better than Revelation. I'll have to admit though, a mini set of deep cuts from Infinity or Departure does sound enticing. I think Arnel could definitely do those songs justice.

Nice thread, Deano!

Well, obviously I'm a conservative bitch, but I think they should play a 2-set show with an intermission. 1st set, they should rewind the clock back to 1981 and totally re-create the Escape tour right down to the wardrobe! :D Arnel could wear that damn tiger spotted (or whatever it was) yellow shirt, Neal could go back to full on fro, and Cain could wear that tank-top shit he had. They could play the album start to finish.

After a nice intermission, piss-break, they unveil the Frontiers stage and come out looking like they just stepped out of 1983. Do the full album (minus that gay ass "Back-Talk" of course), then play an encore of "What I Needed", "What It Takes To Win" and "Turn Down The World Tonight". Best show EVER! :D

You are brilliant. That's what I would like. Well, I was thinking a three-hour show with certain music. But you came up with Escape and Frontiers and some Revelation. Great idea on music. Well, scratch that, it was brilliant until you said they should recreate the wardrobe from '81 and '83. Sorry, you lost me there. That would be a NO. But I would love to see Neal's hair wild again. Uh, he's a little too old for some of his outfits. It wouldn't be pretty.

Well from what I read, it is by chance what album Springsteen will do. Every album except the two he did w/o E Street will be played.

If they did something like this, they might have to consider limiting which CDs they picked from. The
pre-Perry Journey catalogue won't go over well and from what I've read on this forum, the consensus is
Arrival and Generations were not well received and Generations in particular was terrible.

The pre Perry stuff would go over like a crossdressing St John, not pretty. As for Arrival and Generations, I would think a great deal of people here like those efforts.

The Boss doesn't have any CDs that suffer
from this problem, so he can pull from his entire catalogue.

True, but the fans "do not like" the Human Touch and Luck Town releases, because they were done with the "other band" and they take that shit seriously. It a long while for Bruce to make amends with the fans. As for Journey, I would think Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape, Frontiers and ROR would work.

I have favourites off of almost every CD, but like many I have never been to a Journey concert. This works more for
fans like you guys who go to several concerts every tour and have seen it all. But for those of us who may only be

And if I flew hundreds of miles and paid out a lot of money only to hear Generations or Trial By Fire, that would not be good.

Well of course they would also play some classics in addition to the entire album. Even BS is doing that.

The majority are casual fans who would not buy tickets if they thought they might only hear Trial By Fire,
but nothing off Escape or Frontiers, so already you are looking at smaller venues and lower ticket sales. Personally
though, I would prefer smaller, more intimate venues.

See above

If I knew which CD it would be when I bought the ticket, then I like the idea - I would have to decide which songs

and take audience requests - Journey would still be challenged to know their entire catalogue, it would still be a

Finally, someone said it! Bruce did that the entire tour, and as I have mentioned a million times earlier, 110 different songs were played. That is awesome. The big question is could Journey do that? Could they really know and learn their catalog inside and out. Of course, the band could just not play a particular song the fan requested, if they didn't know it..they could just say they prefer another one.
