My basis for saying this is that Journey tunes still get airplay on mainstream radio stations during prime time unlike in other countries where Journey is relegated to classic rock radio stations.

Ok you are entitled to your opinion, I didn't know people still listened to the radio? honest.

Now If I sound a little forth coming here, then I apologize. But I would doubt Journey were known at all in the Philippines before Arnel came on board, They were not known, and if they were nobody talked about them, no more than old nostalgic acts like Survivor, Foreigner, but even then those other two bands are more known around the world than Journey was. There absolutely no way in this world Journey were huge in the Philippines before Arnel Pineda came aboard, and why would they be? (think about it).

In fact Arnel Pineda was an unknown in the Philippines all his lfe or wasn't talked about - tribute act at best, then he landed the gig with Journey- and rest is a small part of the history of the band. Sorry guys, but the facts are the facts. I have NEVER seen a Filipino fan in all my time at these forums, at any forum, at any Youtube videos of Journey before Arnel surfaced, not one. Journey may of been known in the Philippines? but so was Michael Jackson's Thriller, probably still topping the charts there. As far as I am concerned, Arnel could of joined a band like Survivor, then everyone would of come out of the wood works, no different to what they are now.

If Arnel Pineda deserves a statue, then so does Steve Augeri - it's that simple. Give it to somebody who deserves it.

HAVING said that, Arnel is more likely to get a statue in a country such as the Philippines, than say - an Andre Agassi would in Texas, and that man has done more for charity than Arnel Pineda could dream of. In simple terms, a statue holds more worth and recognition in a country like America than, perhaps the Philippines.

I can attest to mdaemon's claim. What better gauge than my own able eyes and ears...Unless of course I've only been seeing and hearing things since the 1980's  .

BTW, I was a bit confused with your post. You might want to be a tad more coherent with your thoughts next time? I find your correlations flawed.

Peace!

That's not "forthcoming"... that's just ass-end wrong.
Why the hell do you think Arnel was covering Journey songs here, if not because the songs were popular?
Of course, most Filipinos don't distinguish Journey from Steve Perry.
Hence, "Foolish Heart" is often referred to as a Journey song.

Arnel was singing that shit as recently as '06, so you KNOW the songs had staying power on radio and with the public.
...and yes, we listen to radio. Unlike CD's, or mp3 players, radio lets us know when a natural disaster or a coup is on.

wech

Interesting, 2006 is it. That was literally 2 ago, not long ago. I am talking a longer basis say 2004 and prior? Not literally yesterday. Or even when Steve Augeri fronted the band, which I am sure you know. So there really isn't any point in dragging this out. But as stated before, the popularity in third world countries differ, and it's not significant enough to make an impact for the masses. Take the United States Of America, somebody there hits fame, they didn't just hit fame in America, that stuff is global.

Uhmm...that is exactly what I was indicating:
Journey songs have been a staple of the bar-band circuit since the early 80's
up until very recently, and Arnel's been humping that shit for all that time.

Not everyone who "hits fame"in the US gets international stardom: I didn't recognize half
of the shitty hiphop/rap-crap/fag-rock acts topping your charts last time I was there ('06).

Conversely, not all of the clearly-international stars make a dent in the U.S. music scene.
I remember many years ago, a visitor from the U.S. was slack-jawed over this act from the UK
dominating Philippine airwaves. I said "They can't sing worth a fuck, but somehow they're popular",
and he said "They don't have to sing worth shit, if they look and move that fine".

It was a year and a half before the US caught on to the Spice Girls.
Other acts didn't quite make their stuff translate intoUS success. Quite a few did.
Same goes for U.S. acts trying to make it globally: some cut it and some don't

I am sure you made good points in your post dude, but after reading this finely crafted line, I basically started smiling then looked up at that creepy looking picture of you in the avatar and busted up. So what's all the uproar? He was honored with a statue much like our Hollywood Walk of Fame stars.

The caption says below the pic: "Arnel Pineda of the international rock band Journey with Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr., Zambales Vice Governor and Olongapo City First Lady Anne Marie Gordon, City Councilor Ellen Dabu and Pineda’s wife Cherry during the groundbreaking ceremony for Pineda’s statue at the “Statues of Fame” strip at the Olongapo City Mall grounds on December 12, 2008.
PAO/Don"

Congrats to him for making his city proud & probably inspiring hope to a lot of people there.

Well as Wech said and I'm inclined to agree, it is election time there and the mayor's name is included on the statue. Also really no mention of his charity work, and as we know, Arnel really doesn't have any record of success in the Philippines. Not really a household name there before the Journey gig. In Arnel's defense, he was shocked by it all but was in a position where he if he refused the honor, it would have been construed as an insult. What did he say when he heard the news? "I'm still alive". He knows it's Banana Republic politics at play, But he just has to play along with it.

The walk of fame honorees have done something other than sing on one record and take one 2 month spin around the USA. I think that's what most people were saying here. A statue seems highly overboard in proportion to what he's done, that's all.

I guess it would be no different than if Mexico erected a statue for this guy:

I mean, seriously, what would be the difference? Has Arnel sold millions of albums? No. Has Arnel become an impersonator of a musical legend? Yes. So, what's the difference?

Have you seen some of the names that have somehow gotten stars on the HWOF?!

With Tammy on this one, I don't get what the big deal is either, if they want to honor him with a statue, so be it. Why not, they are proud of him.

And on a relative basis he has probably equalled, if not surpassed, everyone on the Walk Of Fame. That's what you fuckin' jizz sippers aren't getting here. We're talking about a relative basis. The Phillipines don't have thousands of "stars" like the U.S. does. Let them erect their statue and enjoy their day in the sun honoring the local boy who's done well. Again, I think it's great.

If this statue were some reward purely from the merits of his newfound career with Journey, I'd also have to personally question the necessity of a statue. That said, it is my understanding from this thread that his status as their lead singer has little to do with it. Not to mention that I personally enjoy the fact that Arnel is getting to 'cash in' on his success. He deserves it.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

As wech and others said it's just a political move by Bong Gordon to get some votes. I'm sure if Arnel had his druthers it wouldn't have happened but what is he going to do? If he blew off the ceremony, it would just disappoint the people who actually cared about him and what he has done.
