A statue for Arnel Pineda?

Journey is quite well known in the Phillppines even before Arnel became the lead singer. My basis for saying this is that Journey tunes still get airplay on mainstream radio stations during prime time unlike in other countries where Journey is relegated to classic rock radio stations.

Ok you are entitled to your opinion, I didn't know people still listened to the radio? honest.

Now If I sound a little forth coming here, then I apologize. But I would doubt Journey were known at all in the Philippines before Arnel came on board, They were not known, and if they were nobody talked about them, no more than old nostalgic acts like Survivor, Foreigner, but even then those other two bands are more known around the world than Journey was. There absolutely no way in this world Journey were huge in the Philippines before Arnel Pineda came aboard, and why would they be? (think about it).

In fact Arnel Pineda was an unknown in the Philippines all his lfe or wasn't talked about - tribute act at best, then he landed the gig with Journey- and rest is a small part of the history of the band. Sorry guys, but the facts are the facts. I have NEVER seen a Filipino fan in all my time at these forums, at any forum, at any Youtube videos of Journey before Arnel surfaced, not one. Journey may of been known in the Philippines? but so was Michael Jackson's Thriller, probably still topping the charts there. As far as I am concerned, Arnel could of joined a band like Survivor, then everyone would of come out of the wood works, no different to what they are now.

If Arnel Pineda deserves a statue, then so does Steve Augeri - it's that simple. Give it to somebody who deserves it.

HAVING said that, Arnel is more likely to get a statue in a country such as the Philippines, than say - an Andre Agassi would in Texas, and that man has done more for charity than Arnel Pineda could dream of. In simple terms, a statue holds more worth and recognition in a country like America than, perhaps the Philippines.

I can attest to mdaemon's claim. What better gauge than my own able eyes and ears...Unless of course I've only been seeing and hearing things since the 1980's .

Why the hell do you think Arnel was covering Journey songs here, if not because the songs were popular?
Of course, most Filipinos don't distinguish Journey from Steve Perry.
Hence, "Foolish Heart" is often referred to as a Journey song.

Arnel was singing that shit as recently as '06, so you KNOW the songs had staying power on radio and with the public.
...and yes, we listen to radio. Unlike CD's, or mp3 players, radio lets us know when a natural disaster or a coup is on.

Interesting, 2006 is it. That was literally 2 ago, not long ago. I am talking a longer basis say 2004 and prior? Not literally yesterday. Or even when Steve Augeri fronted the band, which I am sure you know. So there really isn't any point in dragging this out. But as stated before, the popularity in third world countries differ, and it's not significant enough to make an impact for the masses. Take the United States Of America, somebody there hits fame, they didn't just hit fame in America, that stuff is global.

and he said "They don't have to sing worth shit, if they look and move that fine".

It was a year and a half before the US caught on to the Spice Girls.
Other acts didn't quite make their stuff translate intoUS success. Quite a few did.
Same goes for U.S. acts trying to make it globally: some cut it and some don't

Well as Wech said and I'm inclined to agree, it is election time there and the mayor's name is included on the statue. Also really no mention of his charity work, and as we know, Arnel really doesn't have any record of success in the Philippines. Not really a household name there before the Journey gig. In Arnel's defense, he was shocked by it all but was in a position where he if he refused the honor, it would have been construed as an insult. What did he say when he heard the news? "I'm still alive". He knows it's Banana Republic politics at play, But he just has to play along with it.

That said, it is my understanding from this thread that his status as their lead singer has little to do with it.
