They don't know yet, but you'd think it was y2k all over again! Funny as hell, they keep "breaking" news about snow. We're probably getting less than 1 inch, and probably NO accumulation on the roads. Just cracks me up how much they over-kill these few dustings we get.

When I first got stationed at Ft Jackson in '93, we had about 2 inches of snow fall one night. I had to drive about 30 miles to get home, and I'm NOT exaggerating when I say that I passed at LEAST 25 cars in the ditch. No injuries, just people driving too damn fast for conditions. People are idiots here when it comes to driving. I know they aren't used to driving in snow, but it's not rocket science!

The way they drive in winter weather is insanity, too. These people are out in hurricanes and tropical storms but a few flakes start swirling around and they'll just flip the car in the road because it must be the thing to do.

5 inches of snow off of my car and it had only been sitting 4 hours since my lunch break!
The only thing that ever closed down my school was a bomb threat (coincidentally on an

The south has no equipment suitable enough to clear the roads, couple that with, yes bad drivers, who think you can drive 90 miles an hour in slick conditions, and you have closings. Not that I cry any..............you get a day off! LOL!

People in Florida can't even drive in the rain. I can't imagine what would happen if it ever snowed here.

I think it depends on the area. Eastern KY schools, for example, close in what would seem to some as unesessary conditions, but they have lots of two lane, treacherous roads and absolutely no snow clearing equipment, so the closing become a necessity to keep the students (particularly the ones who ride the bus) safe.
In the bluegrass area, we have better, less treacherous roads, salt trucks, etc, and the schools hardly ever close.
I think for the rest of the south, it depends. Most of the deep South NEVER gets any snow, so what little they might, could seem ( right or wrong) treacherous to them. When I was in grad school, we took a caravan to a conference up in Knoxville, where about 16 inches of snow had been dumped on the area. As we got closer, one of the girls driving in front of us (from New Orleans, incidentally) had us pull over and made me drive. She was just freaked out by driving in those conditions! SO it's really all what you're used to. I dare say many of you Northern folk would have quite a time surviving a Gulf coast Summer, when the temp is routinely in the high 90's with 100% humidity.

Oh, closing schools because of a couple inches of snow is NORMAL down here. Combination of inadequate snow-clearing equipment, and a bunch of people who panic when the white stuff starts to fall. We have plenty of horror stories about not clearing roads with 6" of snow, then having them freeze to solid ice for a week and the whole town shuts down.

Now, just to make sure EVERYBODY up there thinks we are incompetant idiots, back in the mid 80s, Winston-Salem was forecast for a little bit of snow, and they didn't close schools. What was supposed to be a very minimal snowfall started increasing considerably, and the county was then forced to cancel school at about 11:00AM, and get all the children home. I don't remember the totals, but it was probably between 6-8" that eventually hit the ground.
A couple of weeks later, another storm was forecast to hit the triad. To avoid the embarassment of the previous episode, the decision was made to cancel school that day, so as to not have another mess. As you might correctly guess, it didn't snow one flake that day.

You northeners just don't understand....North Carolina has cancelled school on the THREAT of snow before. A couple of inches is just about a national crisis---oh, and if you haven't heard, Raleigh area has just been declared as a state of emergency by the governor's office.

Now, too bad we don't have any decent ski slopes around here....

Though there was never more than 3-6" on the ground at once, it was enough to keep us out of class. (Side story, in the early '70s my mom had a similar school year winter and they had to go on Saturdays to make it up.) We finally went back the week of Valentine's Day. Which sucked because we got no Spring Break, no Memorial Day, and were in school until June 21st that summer. And that's when they decided to push the start date up in case of another snowy winter.

So we went back that fall on Aug. 8th. We were all pissed ALL year until we realized in March that we were going to be done with the year by May 25th.
