OT: Bush commutes sentences of former Border Patrol agents

Postby Voyager » Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:44 am

CNN wrote:WASHINGTON (CNN) -- On his final full day in office, President Bush issued commutations for two former border patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting an undocumented immigrant who was smuggling drugs at the time.

The prison sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Joe Compean will now end March 20.

Ramos had received an 11-year prison sentence; Compean had received a 12-year sentence.

"The president has reviewed the circumstances of this case as a whole and the conditions of confinement and believes the sentences they received are too harsh and that they, and their families, have suffered enough for their crimes," a senior administration official said.

"Commuting their sentences does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes. Ramos and Compean are convicted felons who violated their oaths to uphold the law and have been severely punished," the official stated.

"This commutation gives them an opportunity to return to their families and communities, but both men will have to carry the burden of being convicted felons and the shame of violating their oaths for the rest of their lives."

The official noted that both Democratic and Republican members of Congress have supported a commutation, including President-elect Barack Obama's incoming White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and Texas GOP Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn.

Why the hell did he wait until his last day in office?

Those guys have been threatened and attacked while in prison when they should never have been there in the first place.

It will be interesting to see who Obama does this for when the time comes. I'm willing to bet O.J. will be asking for one of these.

No because OJ thinks that because Obama is a black man he will give OJ preferential treatment, I doubt Obama sees OJ as anything but what he is: A lowlife scum who got away with murder...I would think Obama is a better man than to ever let OJ out of jail.

President Bush did the right thing. They were guilty of several serious crimes...lying to their supervisors, filing a false investigative report, and they hid their shell casings. Unfortunately, I think if they had been completely honest in the first place no one would have given a fuck that they shot the maggot. Now if they were Chicago cops they would have had a "throw away." That's a gun with the serial number filed down that some old school cops keep in their trunks. That way, you can shoot someone first and ask questions later, and if he isn't armed...you arm him.

Right. Tell me how many black people you know didn't vote for Obama. I do not know of one who didn't vote for Obama. And I bet you couldn't find a single black person who says they didn't vote for him either. And do you think that's because Obama is so great of a politician? I think it's because they feel since Obama is black, he will do more for them then a white President will do or has ever done for them in the past. A matter of fact, I am willing to bet that in no more then six months down the road, the people who will become the most dissapointed in Obama as President will be some blacks, I can almost guarantee that. Sort of like back when Clinton took office, about six months into his first term, the gays were furious cause he didn't do what he had promised, which was letting them go into the military openly gay. Instead he did the "don't ask don't tell" maneuver. I totally saw that one coming and when it did, I just sat back and laughed. I'm not sure if this is just human nature or just stupid voters. Voters need to realize that the politicians says things and make promises just to get into office 9 times out of 10, so there shouldn't be any big surprises when these things and promises don't materialize. Again, the President can't do shit on his own without others in the house approving them first.

Unfortunately, it's hard to know what to believe. I believe I also heard somewhere that they were told by their supervisors to clean up the shell casings, so it wasn't that they tried to hide them, necessarily but I may be wrong on that. It's also hard to prove that they lied to their supervisors. The U.S. attorney who was in charge of prosecuting their cases was caught by Glenn Beck in several lies and half truths on his show back a couple of years ago. The attorney got pretty fumble-mouthed at that time because he wasn't fooling anyone.

I wrote about this on my blog a month or so ago and there are some other points there that are really fishy about the government's case. I wish I could remember all what Beck said about it but he had some good points as well.
