My thoughts about the "Journey Singer Shuffle".

Postby Liquid_Drummer » Sat Jan 24, 2009 10:13 am

I was just watching Las Legas with Arnel and was again just floored by Wheel in the Sky. Not just Arnel but the whole band is ON FUCKING FIRE.. Out of all the singers they have had, all the bickering and outright wars it has caused here and in other discussion areas we should remember that we are lucky that the torch gets passed at all.

Once The Beatles were gone they were gone. Never again. No matter who is singing dont we listen to them because WE LOVE THE MUSIC..

The music transends any single member of the band. I am sitting here enjoying the Vegas/Arnel performance just as much as I can enjoy Escape 81 or other Perry era material because the music is more important than anything else. We can still see them live after more than 32 years at it.. As fans we are very lucky.

Journey sucks ass, and I hope they never tour again! Okay...JUST joking. +5  I do have to say though, that I don't think I'll see them again unless they put out a new album. I've just seen them too many times to go see "the dirty dozen" again. If they try something new with the old catalog though...I'm there! Guess we'll see...

I'm with you. I'll see them when the new album hits but in the meantime, Iron Maiden, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Moody Blues and a bunch of other groups are queued up in front of them for my money.

I agree. I'm holding out and praying for one final show/tour/album, whatever with SP, and that would be perfect. But as I've said before, the younger generation NEEDS to hear this music.

My 8 yeard old daughter is a Journey fan and a bonafide mini-loon. I've made sure she hears the right stuff. Of course I also listen to the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana in return.

Either way, the Journey needs to continue. Preferably with The Voice, but if not, with someone. We'll all be able to follow SP also. It's really a no lose situation.

We love the music, but Steve Perry is still in the music. The songs we listen to were structured around
his voice and the singers that have followed successfully, like Arnel, are emulating his sound. One may
argue Arrival, Generations, and Revelation had nothing to do with SP, except the lead singer on each was
there because he sounded so much like him. And while there were some great songs on those discs, can
anyone argue that they captured the same magic?

I've never seen Journey in concert and I feel lucky that I may actually have a chance to experience this
music performed live by this amazing band, but even they have said they are honouring SP's legacy.
So for me, I'm not sure I can say that the music transcends Steve Perry when he is still a part of it
whether he is on the stage or not.

They maybe honoring the Legacy sound but it's not solely Perry's legacy regardless of the relentless hiring of singers with a similar vocal quality. To say so could be construed as being disrespectful to everyone else that was involved in creating the music - I'm not saying that was your intent though just that this Journey wasn't forged by Perry alone.

No it wasn't my intent - each has a unique quality. Neal has a gift with the sound of his guitar, Jonathan creates beautiful
melodies and Steve has an amazing voice and touch with the words. What they create together sounds like Journey
to me. But as the band continues, they continue with singers who are Perry soundalikes, which says to me that he
is a fundamental part of that music that they have not been able to separate.

Absolutely. They tried something different with Jeff Scott Soto and it didn't work out for them so back to the legacy sound. Band sounds great now though, right?

On an aside, Man, I am so hungry for cheese right now! Anyone else fancy some cheese...?

Not so fast. :D If they replaced Neal, they'd get someone that could play the licks like Neal, his guitar sound would pattern Neal's and the same goes for Ross, Jon, and to a large extent Deen plays like Smitty, albeit he does ad lib a lot. When they replace someone, of course they're going to try to get someone that can play or sing like the replaced member. They'll try to keep the Journey sound going. Nobody would be calling them a cover band if they replaced any other member, but every other member is part of the sound of Journey.

Spot on. Get Randy Jackson back and surely Ramos is next in line for the guitar spot when Neal 'cokes out'!
