Why would you want movies to be real life? Movies are fantasy...exactly what they're supposed to be.
You go to escape reality for a couple hours. If you want real s#it, turn on the news.

later~

Lord of the rings, Star Wars, these are fantasy. With the exception of Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, and a few others, most of Clint's movies are believable in their own way. This just has that Hallmark channel vibe written all over it. Of course that's just me and as we can see, the masses are loving i,t so I readily accept the fact that my opinion is in the minority.

I'm with you. This movie was made for TV fodder and average at best. Like Death Wish lite!

My son just watched it, now he and his entourage want to view my Dirt Harry and High Plains Drifter DVDs. I guess I'll have to check it out.

The Kevin Bacon movie "Death Sentence" is suppposed to be the true sequel to the original DeathWish. Anybody seen it?

I saw it with my wife New Year's Eve. We had went up to San Fran with another mixed race couple to see it. I can't say I enjoyed it though cause my wife and my friend's wife are both Asian. I think the point was made no more then ten minutes into the movie that "Walt" didn't like Asians, and it seemed a bit overwhealming that it continued throughout the movie until almost the end that he didn't like Asians. But I really can't say anything cause I'm not a movie producer or director, so this is just my own opinion.

And yeah, Clint going up against a group of young Asian gangbangers was a bit to swallow. But then again as stated, you go to the movies to escape reality.

Not quite...
'Death Sentence' is based on the book by Brian Garfield, which itself was a sequel to his original 'Death Wish' novel,
However, the characters and the plot are vastly different from the book.

Like the recently overlooked Punisher sequel, this too, is a neo-grindhouse gem.

I've seen "Death Sentence." Personally, I wasn't expecting anything particularly impressive, since it seemed like your generic B-rated action/vengeance flick in the vein of Segal. But Bacon played the part extremely well and it was a pretty damn good movie to watch. Nothing revolutionary or award-worthy, mind you, but very nice indeed.

And I loved "Gran Torino." Seeing Clint Eastwood take the piss out of that wigger in front of the black kids was hilarious.

Wow, finally saw it. That was a great fuckin movie and a pretty fitting swan song for Eastwood if he holds true to his promise. The film had its messages, but they weren't overdone or making you feel stupid as they spelled out what exactly they were. Even some great films of late, like The Dark Knight, have been guilty in underestimating the audience's ability to sniff out the message(s) in the film.

This was a dark twist on the coming-of-age formula, and it wasn't just Thao who grew - Walt did too.

i think gran torino was a really good movie especially considering he is almost 80 years old and still in fairly good shape mentally and physically for his age.don't see a lot of actors with his body of work still cranking out good quality movies like clint does either.i think he did a very fine job with this movie and if its his last then its a good one to end his career on.

SH, I wondered during the movie how the Asian community would feel watching this movie. I enjoyed it, but there were uncomfortable parts, and knew if I was Asian it would have been very uncomfortable regarding those parts.

Regarding your point about the racist slurs continuing throughout the movie, even after he befriended the neighbors, almost until the end this is my take on it: Walt was a racist, and he was an old man. He also had many issues. Basically estranged from his own children. It seems the only person he could really love was his deceased wife. The Hmong neighbors he came to like especially the boy and girl, they accepted him as an old racist man but saw the human being behind that and were able to break through his racist views toward them. The beauty of youth. And he came to really care about them. But to expect his racist views to stop upon caring about the young girl and boy and being nice to the neighbors is unrealistic, as he had a lifetime of living and thinking that way. It was ingrained in him. If he all of a sudden changed and never uttered a racial slur about anybody, that would not be believable and would be a Lifetime or Hallmark movie. The ultimate irony is that the neighbors and especially the young boy and girl gave him a little bit of happiness after his wife died and opened his closed heart, and he gave the ultimate sacrifice for the boy and girl, who in his own way he loved.

Two of my Asian friends (one Chinese, one half Filipino) saw it. They said the racist remarks in the movie didn't bother them, b/c he was an old, lonely, unhappy, racist man, a prisoner of himself and enjoyed seeing a lot of Asians in a movie, portrayed as both bad and good people, and especially the boy and girl in lead roles that were positive. But they both told me they would have enjoyed it at home and wished they had waited for it to come out on DVD, and were very uncomfortable sitting in a movie theatre with non Asian people laughing at all the racist slurs and jokes, which I absolutely understand.

Yeah, but the story is something else. I think you'd love it, Kate.

I actually thought the story was fairly generic. It really felt like a 1970's throwback. I didn't 'enjoy' it but I liked it. I would be hard pushed to recommend it though. Maybe its a cultural thing?

I hope I'm not giving too much away for those that haven't seen it yet, but the change the boy made in Clint's character was what made the movie for me.

For me, it's the best movie I've seen in a long time.

I guess I'm just tired of Clint playing Clint. I don't see a huge ass range on his acting. Million Dollar Baby -- great example. It's the same fuckin' character no matter what movie he does anymore. Sorry -- acting snob here, I like variety. Now his Directing skills are sublime... he can direct beautifully. I just don't care to see his face on the screen anymore.
