It should be a rule that these two songs must be played together.

That's my Journey too. '79-'80 especially.
And I like that you put back that avatar, 78!

I prefer his Sammy AV.

Saint John wrote:"My Journey" is pretty much everything from 1981-1986. Almost everything prior to, and after that, is shit.

I definetly dont agree with the before 81 being shit.

I straddle both sides. On the one hand, there were some incredible vocal moments during the pre-Escape days. The duets with Perry and Rolie were pretty much four minute audiogasms. And who can forget the badass jam session at the end of "Winds of March"?
That said, the songwriting sucked. Completely. Totally. Irretrievably. No, sorry, Cain really kicked the lyrics into gear. And I'm the type of listener who looks at all aspects of the craftsmanship of the song. Not to mention that there were even more powerhouse songs than the Rolie era. "Winds of March" was... about it.
The vocals improved, the writing improved, the musicianship improved, and yes, the rock improved. "Stone in Love" and "Edge of the Blade" weren't from Rolie.
So, yeah. 80s era Journey > 70s era Journey, though Perry had some really kickass vocals in either one.

Replace "Opened the door" with "Feeling that Way/Anytime" and you've got mine.
Jon Cain replacing Gregg Rolie was to the band what Steve Perry replacing Robert Fleishmann was; a variance in their sonic that took them to the next level...commercially.stevew2 wrote:Made a big diffrence when thet hired twinklie toes to play keyboardSaint John wrote:"My Journey" is pretty much everything from 1981-1986. I think they "rocked" in different ways. Rolie was more of a "fusion" rocker and Cain is more of a "pop rock" rocker...if that makes any sense.Gideon wrote:Saint John wrote:Jon Cain replacing Gregg Rolie was to the band what Steve Perry replacing Robert Fleishmann was; a variance in their sonic that took them to the next level...commercially.stevew2 wrote:Made a big diffrence when thet hired twinklie toes to play keyboardSaint John wrote:"My Journey" is pretty much everything from 1981-1986. You know what I never got? The idea that Gregg Rolie rocks more than Jonathan Cain. How the fuck do you all think "Stone in Love" or "Keep on Runnin'" would sound without the mighty rhythm guitar?
No one ever thinks that through.
Wildest Dream is a great rocker when performed live.Gideon wrote:Yeah. And that's where I have to side with Tito. I think Cain gets snubbed too much; no one seems to really appreciate that the songwriting improved dramatically and that Journey rocked harder than ever. Gregg may have been more of a "fusion rocker", but none of the '70s shit rocks as hard as "Separate Ways" or "Edge of the Blade" or what have you. So while he brought more ballads to the table, he also rocked harder than Gregg ever did.

Absolutely. I was glad to have caught Journey before they took it off their list. It's an incredible song. Catchy, great rhythm, and a phenomenal Neal solo at the end. Much better than the studio version.

No one ever thinks that through.Cain is responsible for the most recognizable keyboard riff in music history...the intro to DSB. And their highest charting song, Open Arms, also has the Jon Cain stamp at the very beginning of the song. As does Separate Ways, When You Love A Woman and Faithfully (to name a few). Love him or hate him, the man is great at what he does musically.
