My brother smoked Camel no-filter cigs for decades, until about 3 weeks before he died - of LUNG CANCER right after he turned 51! And for those that think smoking outside when you have children in your home is safe, think again. The residue in your clothes and hair when you come back in is enough to trigger allergies and asthma attacks in kids. Children at any age deserve much better than to be subjected to this foul habit and what it can do to a body.

That is SO true. The one and only time one of my patients parents ever complained about me was when I told her that smoking outside doesn't matter, it stays in your hair and clothes and triggers asthmatics. She got bitchy with me and told me it was none of my business where she smoked  . Bullshit it's not when I'm the one holding your floppy toned kid in my arms giving him rescue nebs and oxygen while he wheezes his head off with an O2 sat. in the toilet at 88%.

Ah, yes Rhi. I had forgotten how astonishingly cheap cigarrettes were in NC. I've never smoked in my life but the price in NC sort of jumped out at me. I believe that cigarrettes are more than double the price here in the Boston area.

4 girls...oh yeah, good Catholic Woman. She also became a college graduate in
the midst of all that. She was married to our father, however....perhaps it was he
who stopped the insanity!!

Merthyr Tydfil is one of the old coal mining towns in the South Welsh Valleys - very economically depressed areas since the mines shut down, very working class, with the reputation of being populated by the kinds of people who have a baby so they can get council assisted housing and go on benefits. Not bagging on young parents, it's just she confirms to the worst kind of stereotype of Valleys chavs - what Americans would call trailer trash.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

The prices went up the last time I was home, the average is about $3.05 up from $2.80 for Marlboros, which up here they're easily double that. In fact, if you buy them at O'Hare, they're triple! ...Learned that lesson the hard way. :P

I believe that cancer sticks sell for over $6.00 a pack in the Boston metro area, so NC is still SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, even with that price increase! On another note, you're a beautiful woman, so I'm hoping you give up that yucky habit, but I'll leave the lecturing to your parents

Yes, Dads. :P

John, this will entertain you... when I went for a college physical one year, the doctor asked me if I smoked and I said yes that I had picked it up at school one fall. I shit you not, he said "oh that's fine... it's just a phase, everybody in college goes through it." And this was coming from one of the best doctors in North Carolina! Goes to show the culture contrast.

Well I like you well enough to keep my mouth shut about your home part of the country and the cultural differences  There is definitely a MAJOR difference. That said, most doctors practice lousy habits. My father in law is a high profile plastic surgeon who used to eat a piece of chocolate cake EVERY morning for breakfast. Of course, he ceased that habit about 10 years ago when he had a heart attack

Let's not get too carried away, old friend. I said I liked you, not NC! My opinion of that state still hasn't changed one iota, and I "escaped" 8 months ago. I think that I'll be forever traumatized by the 13 months I spent in that state. It's one of the few states that I've by been to (In the interest of full disclosure, I haven't been to any "deep south" states) that I'm convinced that nobody knew what year it was. I truly felt like I was transported back to 1950, but that's another story

I love North Carolina. But when I'm up in Cashiers or Highlands I see way too many people from Orlando. While hiking I literally bumped into someone I knew on the trail. They're all building second homes up there from Florida.

That is EXACTLY how I feel in my small city I live in the Orlando area! I mean Orlando is a big city now, with lots of transplanted northerners, lots to do but yet in my town, all I have to do to step back in time is go to the little diner down the road and there I am, 1950    I always thought that was more of rural thing though, than just a southern thing. That maybe all rural areas in the country are like that. I grew up in a northern city so this has always been for 18 years and still is culture shock for me!!!

The guy I sold my house in North Carolina to was born and raised in Miami. When I asked why he was leaving, his response was "Florida is too freakin' hot", which was quite amusing to me, given how hot it is in NC. I guess for a Floridian, it's a lot cooler in NC, but it's a place you still don't have to deal with winter. Plus you can still drive to NC from Florida without too much difficulty, so perhaps that's part of the allure.

I've never smoked but I've always had quite a few friends who were smokers. I actually enjoy hanging out with smokers cause they seem to be a very social group of individuals. Though I had to ban two of my best friends in Japan from hanging out with me in the karaoke box cause when they were in there with me and we were all singing for a few hours up in Tokyo one evening, they smoked an entire pack of Lark brand cigarettes between the two of them in about one hour, which fucked me completely up cause the room is already only about 8' x 10' and hardly any air circulation at all. Ten years ago I could be around it and it didn't effect me at all, but now...cigarette smoke fucks me up big time and so if my friends need to smoke, they have to do it outside away from me.

Nope....right now I'm looking at an empty hard pack my friend left at my house last time he was here visiting from Japan and they are made in the U.S. by "Philip Morris - tax exempt - for use outside U.S." is what it says right on the side of the box.
