OT: Economy finally hitting pro sports

Here's an interesting article about NFL teams cutting back. Wonder when player salaries will get hit. And what about other sports too? Will we ever see pro sports asking for a Fed bail-out?

"Approximately 25 positions in various departments will be eliminated as the Indianapolis Colts deal with an internal restructuring and a shaky economy.

A formal announcement could be made today, but most, if not all, of the affected people have been informed of the layoffs.

Owner Jim Irsay declined to comment publicly on the decision to cut staff. A source within the Colts organization said: "There are things that can be done more efficiently."

It's uncertain which departments have been affected.

Previously, the Washington Redskins reportedly laid off 20 and the Cleveland Browns approximately 15. Also, the New England Patriots reportedly eliminated 60 members of their Gillette Stadium workforce.

The NFL is in the process of eliminating 150 jobs at the NFL Network and NFL Films."

I love my Red Wings, but I wouldn't mind seeing pro sports all go in the shitter long enough to see the players forced to take some kind of labor agreement that would bring salaries back to semi-normal levels. Sports are fun, but hardly necessary for our survival. Besides, there's always College Football, which is more interesting anyway.

Yeah...that's what our country needs....more college football. If pro football operated the way college football operated (i.e. letting computers decide who the best team is), the Arizona Cardinals wouldn't even have made the playoffs, let alone be preparing to play in The Super Bowl.

Yeah...that's what our country needs....more college football. If pro football operated the way college football operated (i.e. letting computers decide who the best team is), the Arizona Cardinals wouldn't even have made the playoffs, let alone be preparing to play in The Super Bowl.

My gut is that this will all change too, when all the bowl sponsors begin to fade. As soon as some 2nd class conf realizes there's no bowl game for them, the heat will rise to restructure the entire post season.

Btw, the PGA is taking sponsor hits too. NASCAR/racing, et al, will also, if not already.

And it's not that I have anything against pro sports. I love 'em all. It's just that the exhorbitant price tags from tix to players are totally unnecessary and gluttonous. With America laying off on a daily basis, it's time the primadonnas got laid off too.

My uncle has had season tickets to the Dodgers for years. He has 4 Seats.

This last year they went up to $25,000 for the year. That is ridiculous. It was just a few short years ago it was $16k. I asked what his breaking point was.
He said he thought he was probably there.

$5 bucks for a bottle of water at a game. What a joke!
