The thing is, it should have been a good performance because we know he can kill it. I think his orignal video with the Zoo was better than this effort today. Cain acted like they didn't need to practice which was probably right concerning the music, but Arnel should should have skipped that Lani Concert the other night IMO and came in a little earlier to Tampa.

That sounds more like it. Was it on a par perhaps with the performance of Separate Ways on the Ellen show? I really liked that one although I know many felt it fell flat. He kinda sounded like Ted Neeley!

No. I thought Separate Ways was fantastic on Ellen. This was a really good performance, but not his best, no.

Was this the biggest crowd he has played to? Maybe the occasion factored in, although I believe his recent 'solo tour' was probably more of a hindrance than a help to his voice, especially if his accent is more prominent again.

Well it's not the end of the world for him but I was hoping he would have knocked it out of the park. As he got better during the tour I thought it would carry over, but he back pedaled defintely today.

I'm not going to disagree with that, GB. I've heard Arnel nail this song beautifully. These songs are demanding vocally. But those watching here didn't really notice what we did to compare it with his other performances, and they really liked his performance.

Only a few dozen were even paying attention to the performance. It will be up on youtube quick enough. Our local pinoys will scream no but I'm with you. His little solo gig should have been after this initial performance with the band this year.

Definitely there. It didn't detract from the performance, though, in my opinion. It was certainly there. I wonder what non-hardcore fans thought about the performance.

mmm I dont agree with this one. Elliot sounds fine in the studio, and the Leps are entertaining and as a total unit sound very good live. However, Eliot has to heavily rely on his fellow bandmembers backing him up on vocals when he sings live. I saw them this summer and thought Eliot did a good job, but it was his stage presence and show management that were good as opposed to his vocal quality.

OMG, were we watching the same clip, GB? I thought a lot of people were into it, very energetic, compared to John Legend. And, believe me, I'm a John Legend freak. But more people were into the Journey performance.

The accent was definitely there...and what's with all the bling? This reminded me of the Billy Graham memorial concert with Perry in so much as though it sounded like there were no effects on his otherwise very dry vocals.

Not great, but would probably sound a whole lot better with some fx.

I posted a short clip in the shabby thread. He sounded like he didn't warm up. Not even close to his best. His Zoo vocals of DSB was better than this.

A lot of us saw his shows last year and all over youtube. Before anyone says we are hating, it's not that at all. We know what he is capable of and it wasn't this. There can be no excuses as earlier many of us questioned why he wasn't resting himself but we assured by AP's biggest supporters that we had no reason to fear. Everyone can have a bad moment, I just didn't want it to be here under the glow of the SuperBowl.

I think you're on to something with the not warming up thought. I think DSB was the second song they played, and based on the countdown the crowd did before the song I think they had to wait for TV to be ready before they started it. I saw a brief snippet of the beginning of Never Walk Away as NBC went to commercial, and since Cain said they were going to start with NWA, I'm assuming that they played DSB right after that.

Not making excuses, but he's not going to be in absolute top form after one song.

It lacked a certain something is probably why. I still put it down to the dry vocals, Arnel sounded like he was over compensating for the lack of reverb or something.

I have no problem with anything you're saying b/c I know you're a fan and it's your opinion on this performance. And, truthfully, when Arnel sang this song alone in the Phils a few months ago it wasn't his best either (though, this performance was better). This may be one of the songs he really has to put the work into unlike Faithfully, which I've never heard a performance by him with that song that I didn't love.

I think Arnel is at his best on the ballads, although he is also capable of doing better on songs like DSB.

I saw him do DSB brilliantly twice in the UK last year. From what I could see of the clip I didnt think much of his performance today (but it was hard to judge from the clip)

Perhaps todays performance suffered because it was in front of Televised crowd , interupted and timed for commerial breaks. etc etc.

My thoughts exactly. His last show was Friday night and than he must have flown all night (4-5 hour flight+3 hour time change. I'm sure he was tired, but you should be prepared for national TV especially something like the superbowl. I've seen him a lot live and he can do so much better. :? :?

Yeah ummm I reacted pretty badly to this, too. The accent drowned the performance out for me, and a year later I still haven't been convinced by his voice, but today it REALLY grated on me, I really found the song uncomfortable to listen to. Felt really like a step backwards, and the Superbowl isn't the place to take a step backward for this band.

That's no excuse. He is the lead singer of Journey and maybe should have focused more on this very important performance than his recent outings in his homeland?
