RR Hall of Fame

Postby roycap » Mon Feb 02, 2009 2:06 am

Does anyone think that Journey's continuation of lead singers (Augeri, Soto, Pineda) has hurt their chances of getting into the RR Hall of Fame? I wonder if they had broken up after Perry left, whether they would have gained more repect and credibility over the years of inactivity. I do think they will eventually get in, but it will take a different mind set of the commitee first. Seems like the criteria is a mystery, but popular but not critic favorites have not had success gaining entry. I mean come on - Blondie, Run DMC. These are warm up bands for Journey.

No, I think Journey's reputation as a ballads band hurts them more.

After Rush, Deep Purple, and Boston get into the hall.... THEN we can talk about Journey going in.

But Journey definitely belong in.. and it's a mystery why they're not.

Not only that NIG, The RNRHOF is run by the same folks that publish Rolling Stone, who have ALWAYS had a disdain for "commercial rock" or AOR.
The have never liked bands that were in the mainstream.

Granted, there are some that have made GREAT contributions to the world of rock music that have been inducted (Zeppelin,The Beatles,Spingsteen,The Who, etc.),but they have now included rap and hip hop, which leave you scratching your head as to why those artists are in there,
over the likes of Alice Cooper,Boston,Foreigner.Rush,Heart,Cheap Trick,Journey, and even KISS.Whether you are a fan of these artists or not, you can't deny that they have made substantial contributions to the world of rock music.
I remember growing up, listening to rock radio and hearing these artists played almost constantly.
I think those artists will eventually make their way in though.

Maybe they should change the name of the place to the Music Hall Of Fame, or Rolling Stone Hall of Fame.

Though Madonna (who was inducted a year or so ago) has been an influence on "pop culture", I'm not so sure she has been a big influence on rock music, nor has she made the contributions to the artists I mentioned above, that have at least a decade or so head start on her.

This topic has been discussed by lots of folks, in various music outlets and forums for quite sometime.
Nice to see it being brought up here.

Exactly, Michael. This is one of the things that bothers me about the RRHOF. Its the Music Hall of Fame now. And if they're allowing all this rap and hip hop shite in there (sorry, but I have no tolerance for it), then why are they drawing lines on bands that actually had something to do with rock? Arena rock was still ROCK last time I bothered checking.

Ahhhh...one of lifes great mysteries. How does Madonna get in to the HoF ahead of bands like Chicago and/or Journey. The world may never know. It really should be called the "Music Hall of Fame" considering the number of artist who have been inducted who are not actually rockers. Even so, no Chicago? No Journey? I CALL SHINANNIGANS!!

Jan Weiner HATES this kind of music, and that's why as long as he's involved, no Journey, no Boston, no Styx, and ESPECIALLY no KISS. (which makes the least sense of all- love or hate KISS, they set the standard for the live rock and roll show and they TOTALLY belong in that Hall.

Complete and utter bullshit!

The HOF becomes less relevant every year with the bullshit politics and cash that dictates who gets in. No one cares.... Even if Journey were included, no one would care now.

The crap that has been accepted in over the last few years has killed the credibility of the original concept.

I may be wrong, but I believe the inductees have to pay a huge fee - something like $40,000. Run DMC is being inducted this year, so between that and Madonna, the RRHoF has
zero credibility. Someone needs to start a new Rock Music Hall of Fame with a voting committee of people who are qualified to vote, because Jann Wenner has no business dictating
who is worthy based on his personal tastes.

I believe it's $1,500 per person (band member, family member, friends, associates, etc.) IF you don't mind standing. To sit at a table durig the ceremony is $2,500 per person.

As much as I love Boston, they are a borderline band, if even that.

No way... they ushered in a sound. No one had heard productions/recordings/songs like that before 1976 when the debut came soaring in. They definitely deserve to be in there. Remember, we're talking about somewhere that has the likes of fuckin Public Enemy among its inductees.

I do think that because of the many singer changes within the last few years, the integrity of the band has gone down. I think thats one of the biggest things Perry was concerned about was the fact that Journey was so huge and so successful that if you start constantly changing the main singer, your integrity goes every time little by little. I know many fans were lost throughout the changing of singers, but on a positive note alot have been gained though too. I ofter wonder if they would have just not fired perry and taken a break, how popular they would be today. Would they have been able to play the halftime show with the original lineup?? I guess we will never know. One thing is for sure though, Journey is back and they are definetly getting a new fanbase and its awesome to see that!!

Well now, hold on. Let's not get too provencial here. At some point in recent rock history there was an intermingling of the two genres, rap and rock. Surely you recall that little Aerosmith/Run DMC number, "Walk This Way". That gave rise to, or, shall I say influenced a whole new crop of artists. I suppose if you really reach, you could say artists like Grandmaster Flash, who were early influences in rap music, in turn had some influence on rock which has taken on some rap influence. Yeah, it's a reach, I know. Besides, since there really doesn't seem to be any other hall of fame (except maybe Country music) where these artists might be recognized, I guess everyone gets lumped into one.
