I was sorely tempted to not even dignify this with a response for a few reasons, but I'll take the bait.

1.) It is Journey's song. Period. In fact, if you want to get technical, Perry is only 1/3 of the writing credit for the song. Ergo, Granny's comment that Arnel is "ruining SP's songs" is baseless because it isn't his song. You don't like it, take it up with Sony and every other fucking company that issues the song under the name JOURNEY.

2.) Journey isn't all about Neal, either.

3.) Vocals aren't exactly the means by which someone is entitled to possession of a song. Especially when "the Voice" isn't even there anymore.

I reiterate: it was a stupid comment and received a sarcastic response. If she thinks Arnel sucks, that's her opinion, but it is not Steve Perry's song and it is rude and pointless to dismiss the contributions of Neal and Jon (and Ross and Smith for that matter).

The problem with Journey is, they are known for vocals and the voice. That is their trademark. Bruce is known for a rough and nasty voice and people expect that. Someone, somewhere else remarked how Arnel is a better singer than Bruce. That doesn't mean shit because Bruce's music isn't about hitting high notes or being a tenor singer. Since Journey hit it big in the early 80's, it has always been about the vocals. If it wasn't, JSS would be singing for the band right now. For whatever reason, Arnel didn't bring his A-Game to the big show. It sucks and I blame the leaders of the band for letting him do his own singing on side projects the same week he should have been preparing for Journey's biggest live performance in a long time.

I like Arnel and Steve. But Arnel was not at his finest in this performance.

Steve to me always sounded better on that song.

I have heard most of the new versions of Arnel singing it. It has nothing to do with liking one over the other. Both are great singers. It has everything to do with delivery of a song. Regardless of all the tallented individuals who wrote it.

Sometimes you have great performances, and sometimes they are not so great. The instrumental behind the song was great. Neal's playing was stellar.

Gideon, MG is a great Gal........ :D :D

He does ruin it..case closed. I think part of the problem is Steve Perry is the voice we hear in our heads whenever these song are played and he sang the heck out of them! Arnel does great on his songs because he is the one we heard sing them first. Its hard to listen to him sing them and not think of Steve.Does that make any sense?

You know, I don't understand a large percentage of this board. How does the fact that it's her "humble opinion" change my accusation that it was both stupid and thoughtless? I suppose the comments made by Arnel's lunatic fan brigade -- the ones where they claim that his voice is lightyears superior to Perry's -- isn't stupid because it is their humble opinion. I suppose nothing that anyone in this world says or thinks is stupid because it's their opinion.

Are you kidding me?

I didn't see her dismiss anyone's contributions.... She was comparing lead singers!

She said Arnel ruins Steve Perry's songs. I guess I missed him singing "Oh Sherrie" or "Foolish Heart."

She said he was ruining the song that we all know Perry sang better, that is why it is a classic :)

That's not what she said. You may be interpreting the thought behind her comment, but that doesn't change the fact that what she said was thoughtless.

Give me a break at no point in time in her ONE sentence did she mention anyone other that Arnel and SP.

Exactly.

You are correct in the "Journey isn't about Neal either!" truer words have never been spoken!

You strike me as a beacon of objectivity.

I think you just like being sarcastic..carry on!

The fact that I become sarcastic when thoughtless comments are made makes me wrong?

He does ruin it..case closed.

Sometimes, you all make it too easy.

This is too funny.

Look, I said that her comment was thoughtless. That doesn't mean I'm bashing her or calling her a troll or throwing out pejoratives or anything. This forum is famous for its criticisms and discussions that border on flaming; mine was relatively tame in nature.

The fact that you all think I should not respond to something I perceive to be thoughtless is disrespectful.

I'll cut down the sarcasm when you use single standards.

Edit: Artist4Perry, you'll have to excuse me. I come from a background in debate and discussion and one of my mottos is that an opinion you can't justify isn't an opinion worth having. So when people make comments or contentions and I disagree, I call them out on it. I'm not impressed with some of the double standards that run rampant among certain individuals. And if that makes me a villain, so be it. I'll deal with it.

No villan, just newbie, get to know some of these folks before you blow a gasket. You don't have to agree, and you don't have to do it because I request it. I just think it will make more sense to you in time, as you grow to know personalities. You don't have to agree with anyone. None of us all agree on anything, maybe just the delivery is a bit strong, and to whom you are delivering it to......these are two great ladies......that is all I was trying to say! You don't have to agree with them. Debate away, and enjoy. An oppinion is a personal thing. Just because it makes sense to you to have yours, doesn't make yours the only one that should exist.

I got lucky and as my wife was getting ready, I turned on the tv and just so happened to see Journey sing the one song during the time I had the tv on. Honestly, I get so lucky some times. In my opinion, watching Journey was about the only thing worth while. I guess this year's fixation is with the fucking horses and dogs, saw about two or three ads featuring these animals and then some fat fuck eating beer Dorito chips while I was watching tv for that half hour or so.

Based on that performance getting lucky would have been turning on the TV to find they had just finished.

I'm just not so critical of everything he and the entire band does or does not do like most people. I simply enjoy seeing Arnel up there singing cause I knew him personally and used to be right there watching him twenty-plus years ago in person. Now he's in some way part of the Superbowl and that's amazing to me.
