Glad to hear that Steve Augeri is coming through the mix really well.

Look at Arnel at the 50 second mark! I say again.... That's a little inappropriate for a Superbowl show!  And I think this song is just as bad as the other! They're using pipped in vocals (which I don't mind so much), but then Deen's trying to sing a lead harmony to Arnels lead (which is out of pitch in that part) and it comes off horribly. I honestly feel like they may have jammed for 5 minutes on two songs before they got up there and just tried to wing it. I think they're some of the best musicians in the world, but this was definitely NOT a good day for them. Can't wait to hear some other clips.

Reason is because surprise, surprise. Arnel isn't a good vocalist. He was terrible on the re-recordings, he was terrible in the youtube clips on his first shows in the band. He only sounds good on the new cd because, well anyone can sound good now a days in the studio. The guy can't bring it in a live setting and now they've got Augeri's backing tracks to go along with him. WTF. Bring back Soto or get a vocalist who can stay in pitch, or hang it up.

There is a reason why I didn't go see JRNY on the last tour and this is it.

Well, there's a lot of longtime Journey fans on here that went to a concert or more than one concert last year that would beg to differ with you. Arnel more than delivered live when I saw him in concert last summer and was fantastic. The whole band was.

Complain all you want...I know that this lineup has kicked ass, saw it live all over California and every time, the crowd I talked to left feeling AMAZED.

But you wouldn't know that if YOU NEVER SAW THEM.

Can't argue with that!!!!

And that's the performance I was expecting. AP can be flat amazing. I guess that's why the disappointment, he's capable of so much more. OH WELL. :(

Like has been said before, this one is over. I just hope Journey gets another chance with this type of crowd to put on the performance we expect.

Bwahahahahaha!! PWNED!!

AP is a monster vocalist. He had one hell of a great year. The Vegas show was great, but the Dallas show was incredible. And THAT was his third night in a row singing. I was extremely surprised at how good he was after having sang two nights in a row previously.

Don't worry ttango, there's always a few.

Journey is snake bit when they perform live, on the air. They never do as well, for some reason.

I'm one of the old enough peeps on this board to say that he saw Perry in his long-haired greatness when he was in full-control. I didn't get to see Smitty or Ross on The ROR Tour but Baird and "What up Dog" Randy Jackson were adequate enough although Mike's Pink hat and Randy's fatness and Table-top hair was not a big draw.

I said that AP has done better. I agree the close your eyes thing half-way wasn't the best face to present. I'd liken it to having a really good orgasm, at least that's how it looks in those types of movies. Not saying I'm an expert, but there is a reason why that industry seems to be recession-proof and has it's own Las Vegas convention.

But hell...if we could get past Steve Perry dressing like an LA Doll with the tied-up shirt or Neal looking like a White-Black guy circa early 1970's, then we could get past the Super Bowl thing. Time heals everything. But still...Journey played at the Super Bowl...AWESOME.

8)

obtw ...my response was for jestor who said he didn't see JRNY at all last year.

From what I have heard, Arnel knows he dropped the ball, and is upset with his performance. But it's done with. Lani is probably feeling just as bad after having him with her those few shows and then this happens. To me it's no big deal. It wasn't halftime where every body's got the set on and even the hosts treated them like a garage band with Karaoke comments. If Arnel had sang perfectly, I don't think it would have made a difference in how many sales of Revelation occur next week. They didn't even get to pimp the album at all. If anything happens it will be Journey's greatest hits and the Escape album will get a slight nudge up the charts as they did whe the summer tour started. Journey will continue on like they have, a good band that if you can get them with another decent group can fill amphitheaters over the summer. The glory days of 81-83 aren't coming back, and it's not fair to put those expectations on Arnel. Journey is not BonJovi or U2. They are not going to reinvent themselves to stay relevant with todays music scene. They are perfectly happy to continue to play their old songs and continue with their legacy sound. If they could mix up the setlist, I might go see them again, but I saw two Escape concerts and two Frontiers shows live. I don't need to see those shows again with a different singer. I saw Arnel this summer and it was good but I felt shortchanged by the lack of Revelation songs on the setlist. If they are going to keep playig the same predictable setlist, then I can't Justify seeing them in concert anymore.

His site. He was in the shoutbox saying how he let the band down. He beat himself up over it. Who ever mentioned the lack of ear monitors was on the money. I think he said he couldn't hear shit while he was performing but once he saw the tape he was devastated. He was pretty much apologizing to every one.
He owned up to it and he has my respect for that. Not your typical lead singer act there.

Here is a transcript of the aforementioned discussion on his site.

I have to say that I agree. The fact that he seems this upset, himself, proves he is holding himself up to a high level as well, and that he knows he can do better.

Any worries I had are not gone, personally. The fact that he feels this way proves his heart is in this, and he wants to hit it out of the park like so many of us have seen him do before.

Thanks. I actually commented about how cold it looked there on the Sunday and wondered if that might have factored in. Still, very disappointing. They should have prepared more thoroughly and the blame for that rests with Arnel giving priority to his interests outside of the band and Journey not pulling rank.

I wonder what Jon or Neal said to him. Some of his comments about Journey hopefully wanting to keep him sounded like they might have got on his case. I think they are just as responsible too as they didn't get him to the states earlier and put a clamp on his side projects. He can not shoulder all the blame for this by himself.

Yep, just as I said earlier, the blame for Sunday afternoon lies with Arnel, Neal, Jon, the PR team, and management.
Arnel's vox were off, Neal and Jon's parts sounded funny, the whole performance just looked forced and awkward (to me).
The PR person seriously fucked up by not having anything prepared for the broadcasters.
Management should have coordinated better. It was FUBARs all around, and not what you'd expect out of guys who have been doing this for decades. I think that's what makes it so tacky. Fortunately, for most of the viewing public, they've probably forgotten it by now. But the problem is they had the chance to make an unforgettable performance. I know the glory days aren't coming back, but it was a missed opportunity nonetheless. And the fault doesn't lie with just one person.

Right. I made the mistake of clicking on some of those links from the non-televised stuff... whoo boy.
Not good. Forced and awkward is a comepletely correct assessment. :?

Arnel sounds really rough on Separate Ways.

Sounds a little worse for wear, but again, he's not ducking notes or reverting to falsetto or anything.
I'm not sure you guys know what a bad night really sounds like.

I don't know why, but this comment from AP just stood out to me. I'm sure he's just being hard on himself (which he should be), but I think this says a lot...

Thanks, FF!!! Kudos to Arnel, I would have expected no less from him.
He seems like such a sweet, humble and gracious person!!!
Reading that makes me sad for him, but unlike many of his fans,
he seems to be a little more realistic!!! I have a feeling he
has learned many lessons from this!! GOOD LUCK Arnel!!!

These performances are not great, but they are really not that bad either. I have seen many live performances go a lot worse. This all falls on the entire band and management for not rehearsing... no one can just pick up as a band after months away and just get right back into a tight unit.
