Ugh! Thats terrible....and here I thought AP's Superbowl vocal was rough...his sounded smooth compared to this persons gravel growling..couldn't even listen to the whole thing.

To each is own. I was posting it because of the melody, which is what the thread was about.

I liked it. Don't usually dig girls with a rhaspy voice but she was ok. Can't stand Bonnie Tyler, actress Holly Hunter ugh.

The melody was cool Sia's voice reminds me of Shakira whose voice I can sometimes handle. Especially if she's doing a belly dance. :)

Not really haunting but needed for example:

Shakira - Suerte

Raspy can work if thats their natural sound..like Stevie Nicks. My biggest problem with it is when it's a fake put on rasp like Sia did in parts, other parts the rasp is not there....well, it's not even really a rasp she's doing in that song anyway..some kind of growling...guess the idea was to project the idea of pain but it just sounds terrible IMO.

It is, isn't it? (awesome, I mean). I could be wrong, but i don't think that 'covers' CD actually exists (officially, anyway). I've heard samples of some of the songs here and there but was quite surprised to find some of them on YouTube, just took a shot and searched. Some of the posters more expert on everything JSS could maybe fill us in?

Thanks for posting that - that was cool I never heard JSS's cover. I only heard this song for the first time several months ago when I stumbled upon it on youtube while looking for something & immediately loved it. The sad thing is that the youtube I found was a memorial to the young New York model who had killed herself by jumping from a building...the photo montage of her (she looked like a Raphael angel) and the song was soooo sad...I always think of her now when I listen to the song.

It's actually a cover on the Alex Rudi Pell CD "The Ballads". It also showed up on a bootleg called 'Cover 2 Cover' that was sold on eBay, but wasn't an official release.

Also, Keane has a lot, especially this one: "Atlantic": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkG7a3GQnSg

Now what exactly defines "haunting melody"? Is it a feeling of isolation? associated with a sad event? the way the instruments are played? I've been thinking about this and the songs that would come to my mind I'd listen to on youtube and then they didn't seem as "haunting" as I always thought. So is sad & haunting the same thing? Because there are many songs I find sad but not exactly with a haunting quality.

Anyway, here's another that I always felt falls somewhere in there:
Christopher Cross: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYEWeBarLww

Another one I always think of as haunting is a Beatles song and I can't for the life of me figure out the title! It sounds very ethereal/dreamy (or drug induced -lol) with the lyrics something like, "someone calls out my name"...and then a female voice says "John".....somebody help me cuz it is gonna drive me batty now.

#9 Dream (Lennon, not the Beatles)

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=CEsB3-SMr5s

THANK YOU! I thought it might be Lennon 'cuz of the lyric.

As far as a Journey song with the most haunting melody, it'd have to be WINDS OF MARCH.

Otherwise, Boz Skaggs "Look What You've Done To Me" is one of the most haunting I've ever heard.
