Simpson forgets lyrics, fights tears at Mich. show

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A bizarre 38-minute set by opening act Jessica Simpson inadvertently stole the spotlight from headliner Rascal Flatts in a show at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Grand Rapids Press says Simpson forgot her lyrics, struggled with her ear monitors, mumbled through songs and fought back tears during Thursday night's performance.

At one point, she asked her backing band to start over on one song, and she forgot the words to another.

Cindi Berger, a representative for Simpson, says the 28-year-old singer-actress had an "off night."

Simpson apologized to the supportive audience of about 9,000 by mouthing the word "sorry" on two large video screens.

What is wrong with her?

From what I saw on TV last night, lack of makeup.

Fuck the analysis. Perry on his worst day is twice as good as Pineda on his best.

Hell yeah, bring that fucker back, front and center.

Maybe TMZ can get a clip for us, they seem to be able to find everything else. Maybe they know where Osama is too. I'll fire off an email.

You guys don't get it.

Oooh, Arnel is better now, Perry can't do it , bla bla bla. Did you not watch the music from last Sunday. Arnel sings Bruce under the table, but isn't half as good. Perry will bring that "something" Pineda lacks. Perry is a legend, Pineda is a replacement. remember that.

Perry is a legend. No problem there. Arnel's done ONE album with Journey. Can't be a legend off of being on one album. I don't care who's a legend or not. If we're talking about who's got the pipes NOW, it ain't Perry. Back then if Arnel was as he is now and Perry was as he was then, no contest. But now, I don't think Perry is up to it. I'm waiting to be proven wrong by the man himself, but he has chosen to be a recluse. Oh well.

Deano, I seem to remember you also were pretty "Perry can't do it anymore". You've changed your tune, haven't you? Perry DOES have that "thing" that makes his voice special. You think because I admire Pineda's talent that I slam Perry. Not so.

If it was a vocal contest, sure but as we know Bruce doesn't have the purest voice, and yet his album is debuting at number one. In Steve's case, When you are considered the Legacy, it compensates for a lot of things that time has taken away.

As for Bruce, can't stand him. Never have 'gotten' him. As a vocalist, he sucks. As a writer, he's like Dylan. Great writer, but everyone else does his songs better than he does. Just my opinion, it won't stop him from selling a few albums.

Arnel is the better singer at this point in time, but Steve is the legend so even if time has robbed him of his voice to some degree, his status as a major part of the Journey legacy compensates for that. He is the original and he is the one who's voice has has become embedded into our memories over the last 30+ years. That counts for a lot. Hopefully Arnel will get a taste of that iconic status before his career nears it's twilight.

When I speak of legends, like Bruce and Perry, there is something about them, that Pineda just doesn't have. Bruce and SP have written songs, very very good ones, and have been on the radio, and have sold lots of records. One is in the HOF and the other may have the best voice ever heard by a man. Pineda simply is not there, and is never going to approach that level.

Brywool, by the way, Gunbot said it, Bruce debuted at number one, selling 250,000 copies the first week, and that was before the Super Bowl bump. It will go platinum, REAL platinum, unlike Journey's bullshit record, in 3 weeks tops. There has to be something there, right?

I don't disagree at all GB. I'm just saying that in spite of the SB performance, Pineda is an incredible singer. I don't think he's better than Perry was or anything like that. But, the guy is working NOW. Perry isn't. Perry's a total legend. I got no problem with that.

Not trying to say that Arnel's a legend. I really could care less. The guy's got tons of emotion in whatever language he's singing. I think I identify with him a lot because he's near my age and was 'discovered' doing what I do. That's not to compare my talent (or lack thereof) to him, but his story is totally inspiring to me. He's also (or appears to be) incredibly humble. I like that. It's not just the "poor kid on the streets" deal but the other side of it. It's gained him a special place in the roster of people I like. Then watching him come out and just kick ass (and he did) was great to see.

As for sales, while it means BUCKS to the artist, er, or should, many bands that I love haven't sold dick and I could care less. Shaw/Blades, Kings X, JellyFish, The Major Labels ... haven't sold anything and some of those nobody knows. I could care less what the general pubic goes for. Many songs have sold millions that SUCKED.
Oh Mickey Your So Fine, Mr. Roboto, and I'm sorry, but Born in the USA was terrible. It was one riff played over and over ad nausium(sp), with Bruce singing out of tune over it. I couldn't stand it. "Glory Days" same deal. Terrible song with his out of tune rasp over the end. Born to Run- THERE's a good song.

Arnel is doing a great job, promoting the legacy of Journey. If the next album has all new material pointing to the future with no more odes to the past (remakes), I'll be a happy camper.

Alas I won't be making that appointment tonight. I'm sitting between two Hooter spots (Burbank and Pasadena), both within 10 miles but SAMO is out of my reach tonight.

I'm a punk ass pussy, I know. Next weekend, no problem but just not possible today.

Perry will bring "something" . . . What? When? Keep on dreaming!

Pineda replaced the legend . . . thus, the lgend lives on because of Pineda. Thank you.
