Those people need a REO/Europe concert to raise money for the disaster relief.

That would bring in at least a hundred maybe 200 bucks.

Now that's insult to injury!

Yeah, south eastern Australia burns while Queensland floods. The irony hasn't been lost. Maybe we need to put a giant jack under the Cape and tilt the country so all the flood waters run south to the fires...

Thanks for the smile, Deano, I needed it. I've got a lot of friends through various social groups in the areas hardest hit in Victoria, and the email lists are going nuts this morning because 6 familes are still unaccounted for. I know it's probably just because they evacuated and the phones are jammed getting info out, but until they all check in, I need all the smiles I can get. :(

Thanks GB - I've been worrying about this year's fire season since we started getting news of the Californian fires last year. We always knew this was going to be a bad year because of the late rains. Since the early 80s the Californian fire services have sent people to Australia whenever there's a big fire coming through; we owe you guys and we know it.

I am Not bitter my man. Like I said your act is getting old. LOL Kick my ass   Now that's funny   You love to threaten people   I don't think Andrew posted this thread to see your humor which you don't have.
People have died. Again my prayers are for the people affected.

Actually, I appreciated the joke - I'm waiting to hear from friends affected who still have to check in, and a little comic relief does make a difference to the stress levels. I don't for a moment think Dean is being disrespectful to those who died, and I know damn well that if...sorry, can't say it till everyone is safe... but if something affected me (or Andrew, or Vladan, or anyone else on this board) on a personal level, I know damn well Dean would be one of the first with a PM saying all that needs to be said. Just because he doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve, don't make the mistake of thinking he doesn't have one.

I hope there is an end soon and those responsible get the full measure of your laws. This happens in California every year from various causes. The death toll is very sad.

This happens here in California too. We had it just last summer, from Northridge to Simi Valley. Just insane. My prayers out to everyone in Oz for safety.

What is so sad about these bushfires was according to the latest news, it is man made. Nature had nothing to do about it. Satellite pictures shows that it is all over the country. At first I thought that is so freakin unnatural and when this latest news came, I was not a bit shocked.
Over 130 dead at this time and millions in damaged .... I just hope who ever started these get caught by the Aussie authority.
If what was claimed by some sectors that a certain religious group had something to do with it in the name of their God and cause...then the world will be in trouble.
My heart goes to all the people of Australia, you will endure and you will survive this tragic event.
God be with you all.
Many of the great achievements of the worldweer accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.

Good points, but you failed to mention that in addition to earthquakes, fires, tornadoes and hurricanes, we also have George W Bush. Even though that motherfucker is technically gone, his odor is still awash across the fields, valley's and mountain tops of America, and it's going to take a few years if not decades to finally rid ourselves of that painstaking 8 years.
As to what Madsplash is doing- nevermind that asshole. He is trying to smear me at any cost. Of course I feel terrible for our Aussie brethren. Seriously, but what can I do about it? I thought send the package of REO and Europe over was a nice gesture.

What's does this have to do with the tragic events in Australia?? What an stupid comment. And you should look in the mirror and see who the asshole is with these comments. :(

Ari, could you and Andrew chime in on this thread from time to time so we don't worry about you? I have grown quite fond of my new Aussie aquaintences! :D I wish they could get those fires out quick.

Here is a lame joke to hopefully brighten a not so bright day!

A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking. The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, "Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large".

Then they walk around the ranch a little, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately says, " We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows".

The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asked, "And what are those"?

The Aussie replies with an incredulous look, "Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas"?

I'm fine and safe - 800+ kilometres from the fires. Thankfully they are being brought under control at last. Andrew should be ok too - I haven't heard of any fires in Tasmania, and there's a stretch of sea (Bass Straight) between Tas and Victoria, so the risks of spread are low. Canberra's fire free too, so Vladan should be ok as well.

I'm sighing with relief because all of my friends have checked in 'safe' - 3 families I know have lost their homes, and another friend has 2nd degree burns to her arms, legs and part of her face, but otherwise they are ok. But the death toll is sickening, and what is worse is that there are hundreds of missing people. It's going to be weeks before the confirmed death toll stops climbing. The number of children is the worst...

As for the 'jihad' bullshit - there's no evidence of that at all that I can find, and I don't think it helps spreading that kind of crap when we're trying to deal with this disaster. All of South Eastern Australia has been on tenterhooks about bushfires since mid-November when we started getting late rain. We knew it was going to be a bad summer, and it's pure bad luck that we had such a long heatwave of such high temperatures. People are in agony about what has happened, the last thing we need now is idiots throwing around hateful 'look, the Muslims did it!' bullshit before anything has been established. What we really don't need following this disaster is a replay of the Cronulla riots because some biggoted idiot decided to throw out unsubstantiated rumours. Take it somewhere else, please. (Sorry if that's treading on your moderator toes, Andrew, but that really got to me)

Andrew was in my thoughts today when I read this.
Fact Finder- I read that Muslim thing on Drudge this morning. Hopefully, that's not true, but I find it interesting that the US is looking at that angle and (to my knowledge) nobody else has mentioned it. This isn't a slam on you or anything, I just thought it seemed weird.
Whoever's behind it definitely needs to pay the price.

Sad stories I've read today.

Its a massacre!

Death by fire is not pretty...
For those who caused it...
they will not die only once...
they will die over & over
for an eternity...

I have a hard time understanding how someone could deliberately set a fire knowing it could kill people. The loss of human life is staggering. I can't help but wonder how many innocent animals have also perished from some human's stupidity. May the people who did this rot in Hell.
