Because the man has been losing range since the mid-'80s. His TBF work was demonstrably weaker in all vocal categories and even on those rare occasions when he has sang backing vocals for various celebrities, you can hear that though he continues to maintain a pleasant tone, his range, power, breath control, and stamina are sub-par relative to what he used to be.

Long story short: everything we've heard him do since the '80s makes it clear that he was losing it. Will he always have a great voice in terms of tone? Sure. But he can't tackle this shit anymore. He clearly doesn't possess the other factors.

High notes does not make you a great singer. Personally I like his lower ranges. To say he cannot sing is not the same as he cannot sing as high as he used to. I liked TBF. I also liked the solo stuff he did......Melody, a gorgeous song. After ROR. I Stand Alone........powerful and lovely. But if you don't care for it that is your choice. :D

I never said he couldn't sing. I simply said he couldn't sing "this shit" (i.e. Journey) anymore. Nor have I ever condemned his solo vocals or later-era works. TBF is my favorite Journey album.

Understand...............Still love what he has done, past, present, and future?...........Steve?

Do me a favor, please, and don't misquote me again. It's epidemic around here, people taking my statements out of context and ignoring certain words.

Steve Perry not being the only facet of Journey becomes "LOL SO STEVE PERRY WASN'T A FACTOR IN JOURNEY'S SUCCESS< EH?!"

And Steve Perry being unable to sing Journey becomes "SO STEVE PERRY CAN'T SING ANYMORE IS THAT IT?!"

There's no need in it and I find it particularly annoying.

Get your panties out of a twist. Sometimes it is the way your delivering it. It might read one way to you and to others another way. Just clarify what you mean. And if I misunderstand something, and that is what it is a misunderstanding, just point the real way you feel out. I am not trying to annoy you. If I was I would really do it right..............shut up FF.

What he lost in range, he made up for with control.
Even with the Rod Stwewart-rasp creeping in, some of the FTLOSM performances are stunning.

Exactly. Trial by Fire is incredible. I love the vocal performances on every single one of those tracks, even the songs I don't like. Don't listen to FTLOSM too often, to be honest.

I have really come to love Trial by Fire, but can't say the same for the entirety of FTLOSM. Some really good songs, but on a whole lacking. Those two CDs were close together in time, and definitely shows his best is with Journey and what they achieved together.

I've been listening to Perry's solo stuff a lot lately, and he's got some really great songs, and as you said, some not so great, but still good. The song Against The Wall, is a good song in parts, and painful in others. He shouldn't have tried to hit some of those notes. Ouch.

God, I love this forum.

artist4perry wrote:Get your panties out of a twist.

I wasn't rude nor mean. I simply asked you to stop misinterpreting statements. You're committing a falsehood by suggesting, implying, or outright stating (you've done all three) that I claimed Perry couldn't sing.

We have three options: a.) You're a liar. 2.) You're the victim of reading deficits. 3.) You've simply made a mistake and didn't like how I called you out on it.

I'll let you pick, but I haven't been unkind. If you're nearly as nice as you seem to be, you'll simply apologize (or failing that) say "Okay, Gideon, I'll do better next time" and we can move on.

Sometimes it is the way your delivering it.

Welcome to the internet. Text doesn't enjoy the same nuance that a voice does. Rather that blindly grope for some anti-Perry sentiment in my statement, how about you actually take it for what it says?

It might read one way to you and to others another way.

To anyone who can read, saying "Perry can't sing this shit [i.e. "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever"] anymore" does not translate to "Perry can't sing at all!! LMAO!! LOLZ HE SUCKS!!1!"

Just clarify what you mean.

I did. From the very first post, hence why I put the qualifier -- "this shit" -- in the middle of the sentence for all to see.

And if I misunderstand something, and that is what it is a misunderstanding, just point the real way you feel out.

I did. You are currently complaining about it.

I am not trying to annoy you.

The fact that it is unintentional doesn't make it any less annoying. I'm happy to chat about this, but I don't need you to ignore certain words and then go on ad infinitum about me claiming Perry can't sing.

Edit: Are we good, A4P? Sure. I have no ill will towards anyone here, it's all impersonal. But the fact remains that I don't appreciate misinterpretation. Believe me, though. You can flame me, insult me, ignore me, mock me, taunt me, on and on for all I give a damn. I see no reason to get in an actual flame war over something as silly as Journey.

I addressed this topic with all there needs to be said in the second post. This song is Perry's magnum opus, his finest work. Magical enough to turn straight people into gay people, gay people into straight people, and achieve world peace.

It disturbs me how songs like this get ignored and DSB gets radio play.

It's a great song. It's not going to turn me around though. I agree that it should be getting airplay. That opening hook on DSB is such a energetic attention getter. I know we're all burned out on it, but I remember the first number of times I heard it, I absolutely loved it.

Gideon man, you need to tone down the hyperformal writing style you like to use. This is a music chat board, not an SAT Writing exam. I understand you're young and trying to legitimize your posts this way, but frankly, you're just losing a lot of people.

Debate is about speaking clearly to people. If you keep getting misquoted or misinterpreted, that burden is probably mostly on you, my man.

It's a great song. It's not going to turn me around though.

You deserve a solid kick to the dangly bits for this, my friend.

I agree that it should be getting airplay.

You will be spared a second kick for this.

That opening hook on DSB is such a energetic attention getter.

I'm considering retracting your reprieve.

I know we're all burned out on it, but I remember the first number of times I heard it, I absolutely loved it.

I've been burned on it only in the past four years. I feel really sorry for those of you who've had to endure it for the past 20. Hell, it's nearing 30, isn't it?

A4P, the hatchet is buried. Just do better next time.

Edit: Ehwmatt, my posting may be hyperformal relative to everyone else, but "dangly bits" and "bastard" aren't exactly the most formal of expressions. This is how I've always type and even similar to how I talk. The sentence in question wasn't hard by any means so I'm not going to assume responsibility for it. If I crack out an obscure word that would make Mirriam-Webster say "Dayyyuuummmnn," I'll tone it down.

In fact, the phrase she missed was "this shit."

That's the whole reason I'm here, I'm afraid. To debate and discuss. If I get to know you all, that's simply a bonus. A nice one, but a bonus nonetheless.

So much for trying to bury the hatchet, so sorry to annoy you. I understand your proud of your debating skills. But I am just trying to have a civil conversation, not get into an arguement with you. And yes, your coming across as a bit defensive. I was not mad at all.......... :? :? :? :?

O.K. Gideon I'll do better next time...............hugs and kisses...........Ging

Thank ye kindly.

For the record, I like your cats.

Gideon, I am a fun loving individual get to know me. Take off the tie and loosen up with us........this is not debate class, and yes I did plenty of debates in college. Like you said, not worth a war over a band. :D

LOL, it's downtime Gideon...........step out of the courtroom and onto the balcony w/ Denny.........with a scotch in one hand and a cigar in the other. :P

As far as ROR, this is one of my faves too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIvLX615xUU

At the risk of having the "L" word thrown at me (although its got nothing to do with that)... I really do not want to hear anyone else singing that. :? Its 100% perfect as is and can't be done proper justice.

You should hear Deen do it...it will make your jaw drop he is THAT good!

Thats funny, I don't have the least bit of trouble reading and comprehending any of his posts. I don't agree with every thing he says, of course, but how he says it is perfectly clear. He is right that some do not stop long enough to really read what someone is saying sometimes or they see it with their own perception to what they think the person means instead of what that person actually says. I don't think the oness is on Gideon to " tone down" his mentality or vocabulary ..I think the responder should step it up if they want to debate him and take time to really read what he says before responding. If they are not up to the task then they always have the option to sit it out and not enter the debate. Of course it is an informal music chat board but when a topic that is debatable comes up then thats what he is doing..debating his viewpoints.. and he would like to keep it to the issue and not have words put in his mouth or for someone to go off in a tangent away from it. He shows more maturity on here then people twice his age or more. If someone gets upset because he has won on points then that is on them as well.

Blueskies if you have a problem with me say so, Gideon and I worked it out. I would prefer not to be talked about. As far as what was interpretted by me you are not me. Saying that, I have no beef with you, but I sure don't understand the way you keep doing this to me, seems like a weird vindetta. What gives? :?: :?: :? :?

Now see..you just did the exact same thing with me as you did with Gideon. I did not mention you in my post at all but was merely agreeing with a point he has made more then once on this board and not just today in this thread. ....although he did make the point here with you doing it as well and he was correct..your reading TONS of things into my post now that are not there at all in anything I said. You are way over defensive in your response and need to stop and think before you post next time and not be so paronoid that when someone disagrees with you and sees someone elses point and are in agreement with them instead of you...then they must have a vendetta and are out to get you. Good grief.
