OT - Chickenfoot Project (Hagar, Satriani, Anthony, Smith)

Postby Voyager » Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:49 pm

From Wikipedia:

Wikipedia.com wrote:Chickenfoot is the title for the supergroup featuring vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen), bassist Michael "Mikey" Anthony (also ex-Van Halen), guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers). Chickenfoot are currently in the studio, working on a record that is set to be released around April 2009.

Does anyone have any expectations about this new project? I am very curious to hear what Sammy Hagar and Joe Satriani will sound like together. Do you think it will be just some more Cabo Wabo type music similar to what he did with the Waboritas, or do you think it will be more rocked-out like Montrose or Van Halen?

I'm sure that the boys will go on tour after the new album release, and as always there will be Van Hagar music. I wonder what it will sound like with Joe Satriani playing the Van Halen stuff? I'll bet it kicks ass!

I'm guessing they will tour in the Fall or Winter of 2009 if their album is released in April. I haven't heard of any dates yet, but I am sure they are in the making. They may want to see what kind of airplay the new album gets first.

Here's some more info from the Wikipedia page:

Wikipedia.com wrote:The style is high-energy, kick-ass rock 'n' roll ... We all bring to the table some unusual influences and then we also share a lot of roots. And I think that's where a true color of a band comes out, just how we react to each other. So, it's definitely rock music. We haven't brought each other together to do a techno record... We'll draw from funk, blues and experimental. We know what we want to get out of it. We want passages in songs that develop and we want everyone's personality to be able to come out. So, it's going to be expansive but it's going to be rough." - Joe Satriani, guitarist Sammy Hagar has reportedly said that Chickenfoot could 'rival Led Zeppelin'. He said "When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin, I know that's a bold statement, but it's as good as that." He has also stated a comparison to Van Halen, the band of which he used to front as a vocalist. He said "It's ten times Van Halen, because it's functional - we all like each other."

They have a website for the band setup, and when you visit the site, some music starts playing. I am guessing it is something off the new album. Supposedly the album is completed and it is now being mastered.

Here's something that Chad Smith released yesterday:

MusicRadar.com wrote:Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith on the band's hiatus
"We may be away for two more years"

Joe Bosso, Thu 12 Feb 2009, 10:47 pm UTC

The Chili Peppers. No timetable, no agenda

When MusicRadar spoke to Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith last fall, he said the band was taking a year off, during which time he would pursue Chickenfoot, the 'supergroup' he's formed with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani and Michael Anthony.

But when we spoke to John Frusciante only last month, the eccentric guitarist stated firmly there were "no plans" for the Chili Peppers to reconvene. "We're on a hiatus of indefinite length," he said. "There's other things to life."

MusicRadar spoke to Smith again today. The amiable drummer clarified what was going on - and what wasn't - in the world of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

"We've been on a break for a year and whatever," Smith said. "I can't speak for John - he's doing his thing and hopefully he's happy - but I think when we're all ready to play again, when we feel like it's time to be the Chili Peppers again, we'll do it."

Whether Frusciante is at the center of the band's extended hiatus, Chad won't say. "You can't force anybody to play who doesn't want to," he explained. "I'm not naming names. I'm just saying we all have to feel that the time is right to get it together."

Although Smith was at first under the impression that the Chili Peppers would be inactive for a year, he now says the added time has turned into a blessing. "A year off might have been optimistic," he said. "Maybe it'll be two years, maybe more, who knows? It's been a very positive time in our lives, actually."

"The thing is, we'll only get back together for the right reason: to play music with one another. That's the only agenda this band adheres to."

New projects abound - like Chickenfoot

As for the present, Frusciante has just released a new solo album, The Empyrean; Anthony Keidis is busy turning his life story into an HBO show; Flea has gone back to school to study music; and Smith is one happy clam as a member of Chickenfoot.

"Chickenfoot has turned out to be everything I could've hoped for," Smith enthused. "When people hear this album, they're not going to believe it's us; they're going to think it's four other guys. It's far exceeded my expectations and goals."

"If I can be in two hit bands, like, wow, what a problem" Smith, on being in the Chili Peppers and Chickenfoot.

With the Chickenfoot debut album dropping in late spring and a major tour planned, Smith may find that "hiatus of indefinite length" growing ever longer.

"Hey, if I can be in two hit bands, like, wow, what a problem," he said with a laugh, "A drummer should be so lucky."

i haven't heard any of the tracks, but i expect to love them. i'm really, really looking forward to this album. i hope i don't hear a bunch of early leaked mp3s, as that would take some of the release date impact away. in the old days, radio would start playing the first single a month or so before an album release to whet everyone's appetite, then you wouldn't hear the whole album until they unpacked it at the record store. tuesdays were always so exciting.

Joe and Sammy have both said the band will not be called Chickenfoot, that that is just a 'code name' for the band for now. Yet they have a website coming soon called www.chickenfoot.com ???

Personally, I am really looking forward to this album!!

Chad's still a very talented musician, love his snappy RHCP beats.

I can't wait to listen to this project. I love every musician involved, I'll be sure to be here every step of the way.

I think the name Chickenfoot sounds like some fucking redneck riot band that you would see in the beer tent of a county fair. The band has a chicken fryer onstage and they toss full rotisserie chickens into the audience out of a t-shirt cannon.

Chad Smith is a phenomenal drummer...the Chili Peppers have turned into the alt-rock Sting this decade, making wimpy music my mom could listen to, but Smith is still the best part of that band. Looking forward to hearing him do something with some balls again.

I have high hopes for this band. Satch and Sammy rock. I just hope it's not just "party rock" and brings some interesting sounds to the table - it should, having Satch on board.

Oddly enough, all their last names lend to the HSAS thing  I'm VERY interested to see where this goes. Great set of musicians all in their own rights. I just hope they stick to straight up Rock N Roll and skip the experimental-modern-downtuned bullshit

Me too......

Course this was in November...so who knows?!?!?!

Classic Rock Revisited: Is the name CHICKENFOOT going to stick?

Sammy: Say we change the name tomorrow to THE BROWN BOYS. We will put a new album out and people will say, "Have you heard THE BROWN BOYS?" People will go, "Who are they?" They will answer, "They used to be CHICKENFOOT." No matter what we change our name to everyone will refer to us as "CHICKENFOOT." To me, it is more than a silly name. This band is funky and it is like a chicken foot walking around a barnyard. It is down and dirty.

I think he should have just called it the Sammy Hagar Band. That way when they go on tour people will recognize the name and buy more tickets.

Not like Sammy needs the extra money or anything.

I also think it's really great that Sammy has sort of taken Mikey under his wing after he was fucked over by Eddie and Alex. People tend to criticize his bass playing as overly simplistic and subconciously considered him the weakest link in VH, but it will be great to hear those Sammy/Mike vocal harmonies again....and I think this might be a great opportunity for Anthony to utilize more intricate bass playing chops than he was ever allowed to in VH.

I hope this is good, but history is full of super groups whose output has been disappointing. If they can blend the Hagar groove of late, the funk influence of Smith and the guitar virtuosity of Satriani then this could be something truly special. I think the danger is that it could turn out like a second rate Living Colour album

I think this will be quality. Satiani, Anthiony, Hagar, Chad Smith. One would wonder how this COULDNT be good. The only risk is that the big talent, as big as it is just doesnt mesh. However, Hagar and Anthony obviously go well together, so the risk is minimised.

Looking forward to seeing them in Sheppards bush.

From the clips I've heard this album is going nowhere. Sounds like shit. They better have better stuff in the can than the what they've showcased so far. Lots of talent, but no chemistry.

Personally I am not really looking forward to their new album. I just don't think a band called Chickenfoot is going to be very serious about putting out top-shelf new music. I think the new album is just going to be an avenue to sell concert tickets to see a fun party-band to re-live the 80's and drink tequila with (or whatever type of liquor Sammy is promoting these days). I'm looking forward to hearing Sammy and Mike play the Van Hagar stuff with Satch on lead guitar, and to hearing them play the Sammy Hagar catalog too. I'm sure it will kick serious ass, and Sam and Mike will enjoy having a superstar guitarist that doesn't have to cancel shows to go into rehab (sorry Eddie but it's the truth). None of the 80's bands do well on their new albums anymore... but the 30-60 age group will re-mortgage their homes to go see them in concert one more time so they can re-live their youth.
